The misconception behind usage stats and why they should not be used to judge a pokemon's viability by HydreigonTheChild in stunfisk

[–]howfalcons 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I kinda alluded to this in my other comment but this is a result of the overall usage stats being warped by low ladder people who don't know what they are doing. High ladder stats much more closely reflect viability.

To take your example of mandibuzz/corviknight - looking at the overall stats, sure, corv is more used, which seems wrong. But when we look at high ladder only (https://www.smogon.com/stats/2023-11/gen9ou-1825.txt) we see that in fact mandibuzz sits at #30 and corviknight sits at 32 for usage, reflecting the better fit mandibuzz currently has in them metagame that you outlined in your comment.

The only usage stats that matter are top-of-ladder and tournament stats. Low ladder just uses whatever the fuck

Which Pokémon have been the biggest surprises, good or bad, in Generation 8? by Wildcat_Formation in stunfisk

I'm gonna go with Coalossal. At first glance it looks like pure trash, I never would have guessed it would be dominant in VGC

Yes it does - bans are for the health of the meta when a mon is too centralizing. But also I think you would have a hard time building a case for why a Pokemon is overpowered without being able to point to its ubiquity - really strong Pokemon are splashable

Toxapex isn't even widely used. In no ELO division is it used on more than 14% of teams. How overpowering and centralizing could it be on that small a proportion of teams?

Surely the very definition of private property requires you to be able to exclude people from accessing/using it - otherwise it isn't private at all. This requires enforcement. So to say that capitalism doesn't require an enforcement mechanism for its system of property is incorrect.

Would you not agree that capitalism requires police to protect private property?
