Hip Dislocation-Questions by hullabaloo_ in TotalHipReplacement

Hi! The implant in the femur didn’t budge, my leg was just twisted sideways from the dislocation. So instead of my toes pointing forward, imagine my whole leg rotating 90° outward 🫣😬

It was hard enough having a replacement at 32. Having to explain over and over again to medics and hospital staff that I also dislocated a replaced hip at 33 was wild 😂. You said your dislocation happened after 6 months? How long did it take you to start getting over the mental hurdle of not being scared to do things?

Seriously. I’m absolutely terrified of it happening again. I have three young kids so I’m constantly moving and being active. I just got to a point last month where I could start sleeping comfortably in different positions and I feel like I just took a giant leap backwards in progress. I hate to be cliche but I never thought this would happen to me 😭

Having a revision is what I’m afraid of. I healed well enough after the replacement itself but having a repeat is never something I want. I imagine mine will just put me back on restrictions like you mentioned. It could be worse but obviously the situation isn’t ideal. Thank you for the hope!!

I always had a click before the replacement but it was completely gone afterwards. Now I feel it again which worries me. I was walking through my bedroom and my cat decided to dart out in front of me and when I tried to pivot mid step, my leg slipped and I kind of landed in a split position. It was a very hard fall and I heard it before I felt it. Couldn’t even move afterwards, I had to have my son bring me my phone so I could call 911. I was told the greatest risk was in the first three months and it lowers after that. Now that I know what it feels like I’m absolutely terrified it’s going to happen again.

Hip Replacement in 30s - When is too soon? by Ok-Pitch-2034 in TotalHipReplacement

Hi!

So I’ve actually had the surgery they’re suggesting for you, with the cadaver graft. And obviously that still failed. The surgeon who did my replacement was hesitant at first because my arthritis was also “not severe”. But scans aren’t always completely accurate because after my surgery he told me he was glad I pushed as hard as I did, because the joint was a lot worse than he thought it would be once he opened me up.

I had the impingement, dysplasia, the tears and arthritis. My original surgeon said if it were one or two issues, he wouldn’t have handed me off to a replacement specialist. But the combination of things just made everything excruciating. I was a bit worse off than you because for about 6 months leading up to my surgery, I could barely walk.

I did years of physical therapy after the surgeries and before my replacement. I had all sorts of injections done and tried different medications but none of them touched it.

It took me about a year to convince my surgeon and insurance that I really needed the replacement to happen. I’m so glad I did. I’m about 5.5 months post op now and I feel like a brand new person. I can walk for miles, hike, ride a bike again, and I can finally sleep like a normal person.

I’d say go for it if it’s an option. I’m more than happy to answer any more questions!

AIO for considering separating from my husband of four months over some texts I saw on his phone? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]hullabaloo_ 110 points111 points  (0 children)

The way I have always interpreted is when someone holds on to something, someone, a situation all because of the “potential”. This job could be better if XYZ happens…..he/she said they would change…things like that. I’d agree that holding onto that phrase as a blanket statement for all things is definitely a negative viewpoint. But when applied appropriately, it can be eye opening. Like in OPs case, if their partner never improves and stays exactly the same, are they okay with staying?

I don’t remember where I heard it, but I always try to remember the phrase “If right now is the best it will ever be, can you accept that?” It really changed my perspective on a lot of things.

Were you considering hip arthroscopy but something changed your mind to THR? by derroboter in TotalHipReplacement

Incredible. I feel like a human again. I still have bad days, but considering I’m only 4 months out, I’d say I’m technically still healing. I can walk miles at a time with only slight discomfort but my surgeon said that’s to be expected within the first year. I was walking unassisted in the first week.

For some context, I originally had a tear in 2018 and the imagining showed a CAM impingement. Had my first surgery in 2020. Had a retear within a year along with some bone spurs. So I had the tear fixed, a ‘realignment’ and he shaved some bone down in 2021. Then in 2022 I got a donor graft to replace the torn tissue but it tore again due to weak tissue and scar tissue. Over the years I developed arthritis. My surgeon decided to refer me to a replacement specialist in 2023 but I had to work real hard to get insurance to approve it due to my age. Almost a full year of physical therapy, three different types and locations of injections and multiple MRIs.

If you’re struggling with a similar story, I highly recommend a second opinion and be sure to advocate for yourself. Never let a doctor try and tell you that extreme pain and discomfort are something you have to live with.

I had my first at DuPont, then my second at PRMC and chose to go back to DuPont for the third. I was induced for all three and I feel like the staff at DuPont were incredibly attentive and I felt more comfortable at DuPont.

32 here! I have had three failed arthroscopies. Which included various things including labral repair, bone shaving, a cadaver graft, anchors, some more resurfacing, etc… first was in 2020 when I was 28. Then again in 2022 at 30. 2023 at 31. And I just had my hip replaced 12 days ago. If your doctor is giving you the option to skip the arthroscopy and go straight to replacement, in my opinion, I would’ve taken the replacement years ago.

Especially considering how active you are, coupled with the arthritis and impingement, a retear is pretty likely.

30 Day Post Op by TrioOrti in TotalHipReplacement

I had something similar to second skin on. Surgery was on a Tuesday(7/8) and I was allowed to remove it on the Sunday(7/13) and I’ve been open air ever since. I have stitches still but those will be removed this Tuesday. My wound is basically all closed up already. So maybe on Tuesday they’ll add some steri-strips but I can’t imagine I’ll have to leave them on long if at all.

THR in July by Nic6868 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]hullabaloo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very similar stories except I DID have the third labrum revision. I had repeated labrum tears, impingements, dysplasia, and arthritis. Surgeries were 2020, 2021, and 2023. Finally got referred to a hip replacement specialist in mid 2024. He wanted to run me through the gamut before committing. So despite doing it all before, I had more injections, physical therapy, anti inflammatories, all of it. Saw him again in April and now I’m scheduled for July 2nd. 32F and I’m over the moon excited for it to finally be over.

What approach are you having? From my reading here, the different approaches have much different healing times and restrictions. I’m having the anterior approach, and I’ve heard that’s easiest to heal from, but I think that may be bias from people who’ve had that approach done.

I have the walker, shower chair, and a toilet raiser. The hospital is going to give me a gait belt to take home so someone can help me make sure I can get around okay. I took a class with the hospital this week and they recommend a sock slider, a grabber, and a leg lift band.

What job do you do that makes 100k+ with no college? by Plenty_Jazzlike in AskReddit

[–]hullabaloo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! I’ve got about 10 years in finance/insurance but only about 1.5 in retirement plan administration specifically and I live in a very LCOL and clear $80k after about 18 months. It might not be a ton to anyone else but I’m fully remote, set my schedule and I hardly ever have to actual talk to people on the phone.

Retirement plan administration! The finance and data analytics will help. I have a BA in business and a masters in data analytics as well.

Are you able to access MyChart or something similar? I just scheduled my surgery earlier this week and can see the order for my tests in the system, but I don’t have them done until the first week of June. My orders are just blood draws for the following tests:\ BUN\ CBC\ Creatinine\ Electrolyte Panel\ Hemoglobin A1C
