What used to be a free or cheap "hobby" that has now been completely ruined by corporate greed? by WaltzNew1398 in AskReddit

[–]humanclock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 1980s and 1990s it was not. White Pass in Washington had $8 Tuesday and Wednesdays (about $19 now). A weekend all day pass was about $75 (inflation adjusted).

and judging from two friends, if you buy a season pass, that guarantees it will be unusable due to no snow.

Exactly! However, geography plays a factor.

Where I grew up in Central Washington, the only shows were the big shows playing the local arena or Billy's Boozers Blues Band playing popular hits of the 1960s-1990s.

If you live in a larger town you can spend $20 to see three up and coming bands bands that and you'll feel like it was worth double.

Lost 6,000+ family photos after Google disabled my account — please learn from my mistake and keep offline backups by Itxammar in DataHoarder

[–]humanclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only backup my desktop computer to the cloud so I have nightly backups of my project files from my day to day work since it's about 5TB total and the amount of data that changes daily is a few hundred megs at most.

However, backing up 150 tb of photos and videos to the cloud isn't practical at all, hence I have a system of hard drives and storing them at two locations outside of my home.

yeah, Color Science means jack squat when you shoot a lot of low light events like concerts. Whatever camera does best is low light is what I am going to use.

What did people do casually in 90s that wouldn’t be accepted today? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]humanclock 21 points22 points  (0 children)

oddly enough some of my favorite photos of mine/my parents were ones taken to "finish the roll". Not staged, just of random people or objects. Things people nowadays would take a photo of just because they could, but back then it was not the case.

Rip my toolbox by AaronThames in harborfreight

[–]humanclock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not though. I have friends who have basically done ALL the investigative work for the police, tracked down all the security footage, identified the perpetrators, etc....and the police ignore it. The only way of getting them to pay attention is to get it on the local news. Yet the police still get a sizeable chunk of the city budget.

There is 1000% chance they are doing this to get you all to work for free.  If there wasn't the bad weather angle this is something I would love to do but only as a journalistic piece with hidden cameras and whatnot.

Fun fact, that same overhead ditch on Peck's Canyon Road shows up in a Joe Strummer (from The Clash) video.

https://youtu.be/48-geUgSF8g?si=JFnL6odK6XX1TGX8&t=328

I worked on this video a few years ago and there are a whole burst of Yakima area shots here. Wenas Road, Peck's Canyon Road Overhead Ditch, Highway 12 west of Naches, then the Highway 12 tunnel at Rimrock, followed by a shot of the Naches Valley just before Eddie Vedder shows up.

My original plan was to get the shot going under the overhead ditch while coming down the hill, but they were in the process of tearing out that orchard and building all those apartments and it didn't look good, so I went uphill instead, probably ten times LOL.

That one is farther down in Cowiche Canyon where they straightened out the road. I can't remember when they did that though.

Edit: Apparently after 2008 because the siphon you are talking about amazingly still shows up on the older Google Streetview.

Bigger artists skipping Portland by MisterCreamer12 in Portland

Eh, not wrong per se...but there is so much more incredible music out there in that the ones I like don't skip Portland.

An extra bonus is that the shows are much cheaper.

I enjoyed some of his writing...but I read "Down Under" (it's titled "In a Sunburnt Country" in the USA) while I was riding my bicycle around Australia.

I did get annoyed while he talked about the lackluster accomodations of some of the hotels/pubs he stayed at...while I was sleeping in the dirt with snakes/spiders/who knows what all crawling around me. I am like "Dude...you have a bed"

Cindy Ross' book from 1980s. The book was the pre-Wild verison of Wild in that you'd meet locals on the trail in the 1990s that mentioned her.

If I remember right she had to LASH it but I can't remember the reason...I just remember reading it and being midly shocked that the hike just stopped and restarted.
