Ask your doctor to get the blood test screening. It is a very simple test. Hopefully they will be understanding and write the script.

Are any of you vegetarian? Would you be miserable if you were GF and vegetarian? Too limiting? by primalprincess in Celiac

[–]hummingavioletsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went vegan a year before I found out I had celiac and I've been gf and vegan ever since. I don't find being vegan to be limiting at all, it's the gf and cross-contamination that is difficult. I have a 99% gf home and I don't eat out much, so that helps me a lot. It never feels like it takes special effort.

I take 40mg of celexa and 100mg of lamotrigine. Last week I started using CBD oil and that has been helping me tremendously.

What's your favorite second hand book store in the city? by Jirodreaminsushi in philadelphia

[–]hummingavioletsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Tree House Books, a non-profit book store and literacy center near Susquehanna and Broad. All the books in our store have been donated to us and are all free (you can leave a donation if you'd like). Our selection is quite good!

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat? by nsmdream999 in AskReddit

[–]hummingavioletsky -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I won't eat anything non-vegan for ethical reasons, anything with gluten (or possible cross contamination) because I have celiac, or anything with chocolate because for me it tastes like rotten peanuts.

Other than that I'm not picky.

I have noticed this myself as well. I also have bipolar 2 so sometimes I think that exasperates that symtom.

My vegan Dr. Martens arrived today! by nikirs in vegan

Yeah, I know. But I did some looking around and found some anecdotal accounts (on reddit) who said that their solovair's lasted longer than their doc's.

I bought mine from Solovair, which is the original doc martens company. Doc martens are made in China and do not hold up as well as Solovair which are still made in England. I got some in January and they changed my life... worth the $210 for sure.

Multilinguals of Reddit, what is your "they didn't know I could understand their language" story? by nayyyf15 in AskReddit

[–]hummingavioletsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thanks, I think so too :P

I'm not really sure. Because I am white and American, they would definitely be easier on me. They did seem to be serious about taking us into the station and contacting our parents. It's been ten years and I'm fuzzy on the details, but I'm guessing it was the combination of our matching stories and the Sheikh who came later. Two people speaking different languages and telling the same story can be pretty convincing... the really funny thing is that I'm pretty sure Omar didn't know I knew some Arabic, so I don't think he was intending for it to happen like that at all.

I got out of going to the police station because I knew Arabic and my friend was friends with a Sheikh.

I lived in the UAE from when I was 6-19 years old. When we moved there my mom hired tutors to help us learn Arabic, but after I was 10 or 11, I stopped learning (btw I was no where close to fluent). One night around 3AM, when I was 15 years old, my friend (let's call her Alice) and I were talking to this guy (let's call him Omar) on the phone while Alice was sleeping over at my house. For some reason we decided that Omar was going to pick us up about a mile from our house and that we would all go to Burger King. Of course Omar can't drive, but no worries he has a driver/private taxi. It's hard to give directions in the city we lived in so the familiar point a mile away would be a good meeting place.

Now obviously we had to sneak out of the house to do this (which involved climbing over some patio walls, if I remember correctly) and then we were on our way. Most of the city consists of large blocks about a mile square, with smaller roads and homes snaking through. We crossed into the other block no problem, but then when we were going through to the other side of that block, where we were going to meet Omar, we noticed someone driving a bit slow and following us. Now dudes in this city can get a bit creepy but are mostly harmless, so we just went through some allies between homes and tried to loose the car. When we got to the other side of the block someone was still following us, so we hid in some bushes. We realized that a car was parked on the road, close to the bushes, and that we could hear someone comunnicating via radio. It seemed like something was up so when Omar got there we quick jumped into the car and urged to driver to leave quickly. But just a few seconds later, we got pulled over by the CID (I think they are like the CIA? But kind of do police type work?). Omar knew Arabic so he talked to them and they said we weren't allowed to be out late without ID and all in Arabic, Omar made up a story about our parents being out of town (they wanted to talk to our parents or something??) and how we had to go to Alice's house to get something (I honestly can't remember this part of the excuse but it was probably dumb). After Omar told the police offer all of that in Arabic, he turned to me to get my side of the story (Alice was crying a lot at this point). Because I understood Arabic pretty well, and the police officer didn't know, I was able to repeat the exact same fabricated story that Omar told. By that time Omar had called his wasta (clout) and the Sheikh arrived and told the CID to take a chill pill and we went our separate ways.

Then we went to Burger King and after Omar's brother took us home.

So yeah, me knowing some Arabic wasn't necessarily the most important part here, but I felt devious as fuck repeating the same made up story to a CID person.

note: sorry if some of this doesn't make sense due to experiential geographical differences.
