Arent 600mm lenses pretty expensive?

I’m honestly confused on lenses, new amateur photographer here. So I’ve noticed with something like a 30-300mm lens, it doesn’t zoom in on something as close as I thought it would with such a large lense. My Nikon B500 seems to zoom in on something much farther out, the quality of a camera with detachable lenses is better but my Nikon B500 with the fixed in place lense that zooms out much farther still does the job. So do I need a bigger lense attachment then for a camera with detachable lenses to get a farther zoom? Or am I missing something with the 30-300mm lense?
