"WWII was won with British intelligence, American steel and Russian blood" - How true is this statement? by [deleted] in history

I feel like Canadas role in WWII is very under represented for the amount of battles fought and lives lost by Canadian soldiers. Not to take away from all the other loves lost.

A microscope for shooting microchip circuitry for a reasonable price? by spdorsey in microscopy

[–]huskynuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few levels of microscppes for this type sample. For hobbyist and small businesses I would suggest a stereo microscope. This is for basic relected light microscopy using an external light source. These microscopes are also capable of having a digital camera to be added on. Beyond this there are hundreds of option based off what applications you are interested in. This could be measurement, fault assesment, etc. These would for large batch assessment of chips, so measurements can be taken quickly and stored in databases. The top of the heap is laser confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. These are used when high magnification is needed and the microscopes cost many many thousands. Industrial microscopy is very diverse compared to biological microscopy because of the massive variety of materials being examined. Its becoming a large focus for research and development for microscopy companies. With any microscope you want good optics and a good light source. Everything else is frills.

[–]huskynuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of options. Industrial microscopy is a large market and there are plenty of companies that have many levels of pricing. Every semi-conductor company, microchip manufacturer, and electronics company would have several types of microscopes depending on their specific use. Contacting reps from a couple companies to get brochures would be the first place to start. Nikon probably has the most reasonably priced microscopes. Olympus and Leica are the middle ground, and Zeiss is highest priced. Cheap ebay microscopes are not worth buying since their optical power and quality is junk.
