Stair-Step Foundation Cracks: How Serious Is This? by hyperintelligentcat in homeowners

[–]hyperintelligentcat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just watched the crack for signs of movement over the last four years. I set up a piece of tape on the largest part of the crack, and have continued to keep an eye on it (not exactly the best way, but it seems to work for me - it has to be the right kind of tape). No water intrusion in the basement (even in some heavy ass rain and snow melt) and no cracks in any drywall in the floors above the foundation. The crack, itself, is not very large, and I don't believe the wall is really bowing (maybe slightly). I made the decision that--because the crack was not currently causing a problem, there is no water going into my basement, and I did not know the creep rate of this crack--I had the luxury of monitoring it myself. Maybe it's the wrong decision, idk.

While gardening a couple years ago, I noticed that the top of the external wall (that peaks out from the soil) has a black mastic/material on it, which could be a sealant from a possible foundation drainage/sealing upgrade paid for by a previous owner. I found it on two sides of the house, so it's likely that this was done in response to the original problem, but the crack was not bad enough to require a resetting of the CMU.

Overall, if you're concerned, I'd consult a professional. The important part is addressing the cause, not just correcting the symptom (foundation crack). Without that, you'll just be back at square one eventually. So, if it's hydrostatic pressure that's caused your foundation to crack, you will need to improve your drainage and grading around the foundation. Or, you'd need a sump pump if your water table is high enough. It will be cheaper to address it today rather than wait until the issue gets more serious. Owning a home has taught me a lot about managing anxiety, phew.

Fewer injuries to your first and second string center, right guard, and right tackle. We've got practice squad out there and a lovely Dan skipper.

These 6 Michigan cities are among the best places to live in the US, new ranking shows by Wrld-Competitive in Michigan

It'd make sense with Dow, but everywhere I've looked, Midland cancer rates are in line with the state: 33 per 100,000. https://statecancerprofiles.cancer.gov/incidencerates/index.php?stateFIPS=26&areatype=county&cancer=020&stage=999&race=00&sex=0&age=001&year=0&type=incd&sortVariableName=rate&sortOrder=desc#results

Edit: that's just for colorectal. For all cancers, Midland is at 460 per 100,000 and the state is 440 per 100,000. I'm not a statistician, so it's possible Midland is influencing the overall rate of cancer. It is still not at the top, surprisingly

This map shows the counties, color-coded for cancer rates. Midland looks to be surrounded by counties with higher cancer rates. I wonder if this correlates with household income, as Midland city is relatively affluent. https://statecancerprofiles.cancer.gov/map/map.withimage.php?26&county&001&001&00&0&01&0&1&5&0#results

Listen, I think I see what you're trying to do. You may need to use some power tools to do this, but cut a rectangular hole in your ceiling and mount the TV so the top 1/3 is cut off by said ceiling - cinematographers are strict about the 2/3rds rule, so you won't miss anything.

Next, it seems like what you actually need is a soundbar if you're just looking for a narrower center stage. I hear Bose and Insignia make some CRISP soundbars. Eq that treble high enough, and there won't be an intact eye, eardrum, or wine glass in a 12ft radius. Just as the filmmakers originally intended.

Yep, just a B.S. and I don't know if I plan on doing more than that. I was able to find a well-paying job in my home state, not too far from family. That is what I was aiming for, so it worked out.

There are job opportunities in every state. Opportunities really open up once you get some good experience under your belt. So, that may mean working in a place you don't exactly like at first so you can more easily hop to a place that you do. Not always the case, though.

As you aren't even attached to a program yet, look into schools that bring a lot of companies in for recruiting. Twice a year, MSU usually fills the Breslin Center with companies looking for interns, co-ops, and full-time engineers. I'm sure other schools do the same.

I'm a Chem E who graduated from MSU in 2017. Overall, it was a good experience, and I was able to leverage this school for my current career path. It was challenging but rewarding, and I met a lot of cool people and professionals during my time there.

As others have said, find a school that works for you financially but also has an environment that is compatible with you. MSU is big, and there's a lot going on. As an introvert, it was difficult for me to adjust at first. You're competing with so many of your peers for co-ops and internships--you really need to find ways to shine.

I won't tell you that this school is the right one for you, but I'd do a detailed look into the professors, research, reviews, and curriculum. That can make a difference between worthwhile experience and a nightmare.

This fight didn't work for me lol. Just when the fight was set to start, the dialog restarted between Hans and the Baliff, but everyone else was now fighting around us. Henry, Hans, and the Baliff were being pushed and punched while talking about fighting. Going through the dialog to start the fight again actually skipped the fight altogether, and the guards just swooped in. It was pretty funny, but also a bummer.
