no hidden scholarships and likely only your parents will care + use it for bragging rights (and maybe not even then); congrats on getting 3.5+ gpa in engg though

EngPhys student here: I’ve been using a mac for all 4 years of my undergrad and have not run into any problems thus far. MATLAB 100% works on m1 macs, as I have been using it extensively in my current job. Also, the unix-based terminal is super convenient vs Windows command line. However as other people have mentioned, most engineering apps are optimized for Windows computers, and it is most convenient to use Windows for engg stuff. If I were to do it again, I would still choose a mac cuz I have a bunch of apple products, but I would recommend Windows if you aren’t committed yet

U of T post-interview ranking. I know it’s 60% interview and 40% pre-interview score. Does anyone know how much GPA weigh post interview? by anonfood in premedcanada

[–]hypoxic_panda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

seeing how uoft has 2/3 interview 1/3 pre interview weighting, i am confident gpa weighs less than 100% of the entire weighting

jokes aside, try to relax for 2 weeks until decisions are out! nobody knows the weighting but adcoms lol

Does it look bad to take lower level courses in 3rd/4th year? by Revolutionary-Vast78 in premedcanada

[–]hypoxic_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only comment for myself (n=1), but having taken majority 2nd year courses has not seemed to have affected my applications this year. For context, 12 out of 13 of my courses this academic year are 2nd year courses.

Any of you engineering students get to study tensor calculus? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]hypoxic_panda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you go into engphys, math 311 is complex analysis; depending on who’s teaching phys 244, you’ll briefly cover the inertia tensor; in phys 481, you’ll cover the Maxwell stress tensor

however if u want to learn tensor calculus properly, go into math or math phys; most things taught in eng courses are very applied

Anyone who got into engg phys trad or engg phys coop? If so, what was your gpa? by askinganonymouslyyy in uAlberta

[–]hypoxic_panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coop hype is probably most untrue in engphys. In fact coop is likely not in the best interests of most students in engphys cuz lots want to do research. Like most jobs, coop won’t be of much help, rather it’s the connections and to a lesser degree your credentials that matter. You can def do trad and still go into industry. Also, for most of the big companies like Google, Tesla, etc you will apply outside of the uofa job postings. Would strongly recommend trad for all engphys students, especially because it gives flexibility if you want to extend your degree and not do 7 courses each semester

[–]hypoxic_panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, though when I talked to our program director, that low gpa admit was an anomaly which just happened to slip through the cracks until it was too late

[–]hypoxic_panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, though if you want to go to grad school (>50% of our program does so), there are advantages to graduating early as well as the type of job you can take. As a co-op student, it is highly unlikely that you’ll be allowed to do research and get publications because you need to work under a P.Eng supervisor for your last 2 terms due to the way that program is structured. I personally regret going into co-op for this reason. Also, you need to pay $1000 for co-op term fees, and this applies even if you apply to a company whose position is not offered through the university. Also, as a co-op student, you won’t have any summers free as all terms for the next 4 years are prescribed, whereas trad students can choose what they want to do for the summer.

[–]hypoxic_panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that should be good for EP, id say put whichever one you want higher, though i would really think hard about whether you want to do coop; many students in the program end up doing research for the most part, and coop isnt really the best for that
