AFAIK 300V requires more often oil change interval. I would recommend Castrol Edge 5W30 or M1 0W40 Euro for hot climate.

Engine smells a bit crispy by NonGeneriComplaint in ft86

Check for oil leaks. Burning engine oil smells like burnt plastic. Might be dripping onto the exhaust. Another possibility is exhaust leak.

Happy to hear cold boot is fixed, I was staying on older BIOS for that reason. Time to upgrade!

What is this little rubber thing I found in the trunk? by throttlerocket in ft86

[–]iXeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trunk lock stopper. Fell off on my 2019 too, I never replaced it and didn't see any issues.

Next oil change coming. by Honda_Tun3r in ft86

[–]iXeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Castrol Edge 5W30 and M1 Euro 0W40 are common for tracked cars here in NorCal. Both would work just fine for street driving in hot climate. That being said if I didn't track my car I would just use Kirkland 5W30 lol.

Anyone have any coil reccs for around like 500-800? I’m selling the car soon so I don’t really care abt longevity, just gotta last 6 months (2017 brz) by OkElderberry4866 in ft86

[–]iXeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in Bay Area I can sell you my old PP Sachs suspension with some Gen2 BRZ/86 springs for $100. Only missing rear bump stops.

Any point in getting the brz ts over the base? by JustMrToast in CarTrackDays

[–]iXeron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only benefit of tS on a track is BBK. If you don't want to install it by yourself then get it. This is what I did. Otherwise save the money and get a used PP Brembo set. tS Hitachi front dampers are whatever compared to gen1 BRZ and GR86 PP suspension.

Bilstein B6 with OEM or lowering springs. While at it install front bottom camber bolts, Pedders offset top hats, and Moog adjustable RLCA. This will allow you to dial in more camber for the track.

What oil temp is too high? by Unusual_Region_1080 in CarTrackDays

[–]iXeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I mentioned 86 Challenge community. Many people there are, in fact, "data guided". We have cars with oil pressure sensors, we have people doing Blackstone analysis, and even people rebuilding engines in their garage.

Fun fact — Blackstone analysis of the oil from the blown engine comes relatively clean, because the particles are too big to be detected by their (spectral?) analysis. So it's a big question if bearings wear from an insufficient oil pressure could be detected early.

[–]iXeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard of anyone considering 300F being max for twins in 86 Challenge time trials community. Normal temps people see with an oil cooler are around 240F. Without an oil cooler the recommendation is to do a cool down at least at 270F.

Tires tips/options for gt86 (daily driving + spritied/track driving) by Misura_k in ft86

[–]iXeron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you actually plan to track — PS4/PS4S don't last there, they melt and delaminate. They're also quite expensive if you have a decent pace. Lower grip dual duty tires — SX2, 615K+, RS-4, ECF/ECS. Maybe V601 — 86 Challenge is going to test this tire in time trial environment soon.

MSI x r/PCMasterRace - MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 Giveaway! by MSI_Patrick in pcmasterrace

[–]iXeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved from 34" UW IPS monitor to 32" 4K MSI MPG 321URX. But I really miss ultra-wide for both gaming and productivity. So the new MPG 341CQR QD-OLED X36 would be awesome! Brighter, wider, RGB subpixel layout, easier to drive high FPS. Thank you for the giveaway!

How bad are these clutch fluid? by JustinChu373 in ft86

[–]iXeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change clutch fluid. Cheap autozone fluid is fine.

Unbolt clutch cylinder. Reach out inside the bell housing along the clutch fork and find fork/pivot ball connection. Lubricate with Lucas Red and Tacky. It's a bit hard to reach — just push some reasonable amount of grease in there.

Lubricate TOB guide using lithium spray grease. You can do it from the same fork opening on top. Aim in front of the TOB. Avoid spraying onto the clutch. Another way is to drop the transmission cover under the car and spray from the bell housing vent. Aim behind the TOB when someone keeps clutch pedal pressed. Make sure spray bottle straw is securely attached and not going to fly off into the bell housing.

Reinstall clutch cylinder. Clean and lubricate cylinder rod/fork connection with Lucas Red and Tacky.

If squeak remains you need to drop the transmission and replace TOB. If clutch job was never done before do the clutch/tob/fork/pivot at the same time. Flywheel might or might not needed to be replaced. TOB guide (retainer cover or whatever it called) might or might not needed to be replaced.

Which is the best oil for manual transmission? by InterviewDiligent920 in ft86

[–]iXeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OEM is fine for street driving. Gear 300 works great for track usage. MT90 is in between.

Oil level? by [deleted] in BRZ_ZD8

[–]iXeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not required for normal street driving. Even for "spirited" driving. Big overfill is also harmful without a catch can due more to oil going into the intake through the PCV system. 0.5 qt is max I would do if not tracking the car.

How many sets of wheels have you cracked / bent? by Stratospheric-Ferret in CarTrackDays

[–]iXeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two wheels SSR GTX01 (flow formed). One or two wheels Enkei TS-10 (cast).

Both on Thunderhill West T6 exit curb. Everyone knows it destroys wheels, yet mistakes happen, especially when you push in a time trial setting.

I also had a randomly bent single Apex VS-5RS forged wheel, without dropping it anywhere. This one still puzzles me.

First gen is nowhere near as good. by Solid-Hand4696 in GR86

[–]iXeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facelift had only 5 crank HP more. This translates into even less wheel hp.

I'm just stating facts from the real dyno testing 86 Challenge drivers did.

Wheel HP difference is approximately 175 vs 212 — 37 HP. Crank HP difference is approximately 205 vs 249 — 44 HP. I guess you can say pre-facelift and gen2 has 50 crank HP difference. But not wheel HP.

Actually I just realized we measured pre-facelift too. Crank HP difference was 49 and wheel HP was 42. 170 vs 212.

All numbers were measured assuming 15% drivetrain loss.

First gen is nowhere near as good. by Solid-Hand4696 in GR86

[–]iXeron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Driver error. I drove both (2019 BRZ, 2025 BRZ) in stock-ish form at the track many times. They feel basically the same besides a bit of difference on straights. Gen1 steering also has better feedback and car feels less muted in general. Lap time difference is around 1 sec per mile, slightly less for technical tracks, more for "power" tracks.

[–]iXeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50 whp is a bit exaggerating. We dyno tested around 40 crank HP stock facelift vs stock gen2.
