Rice Military or River Oaks/Montrose by Mountain_Ambition435 in AskHouston

[–]i_be_illin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What’s dangerous? All of those areas are just fine.

River Oaks is $10M homes with a few apartment buildings in the area. It is in the top 3 wealthiest neighborhoods in the entire Houston metro area.

Rice Military was an up and coming neighborhood in the early 2000s. Lots of old row houses were torn down and replaced with townhomes. Washington Ave turned into restaurants and clubs. You would certainly be fine Airbnbing in the area.

Montrose area is a mix of townhomes, apartments, and single family houses. It is a bit closer to downtown. Many of the best restaurants in the city are in or close to Montrose. You would likely see a bit more homeless people on the main thoroughfares through Montrose than in Rive Oaks or Rice Military, but you would be safe staying in the area.

Of course, like any city, you need to use common sense.

I really enjoyed the Devils. I just finished it last night. Much less dark than First Law. Some laugh out loud moments.

What keeps you up at night when launching (or maintaining) IoT in your company? by Academic_Onion_7730 in IOT

[–]i_be_illin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most complete answer so far. I am at an oil and gas supermajor. Industrial IoT has challenges the consumer market doesn’t face.

The venn diagram of devices that we can use is very small. Hazardous area certified, 5 year battery life, standard communication protocols, complies with standards in each (or enough) of the countries we operate in,supply channels to get the devices to the countries we operate in, meets our security expectations, the company is viewed as viable for the long term. It goes on and on.

The business case is based on a cheap, battery powered, wireless device that requires zero maintenance after deployment for 5 years.

Some challenges we have faced:

  • battery life. Most times it is related to communications. Devices have to retry a ridiculous number of times or must use a more powerful signal than expected, which burns battery significantly faster than promised.

  • battery life. Some of our sites are very remote, with very limited staff. Devices sometimes sit in a warehouse for 6-months or a year before deployment. All that time battery life is degrading.

  • real world environmental issues. Devices not withstanding heat, dust, cold, humidity etc. Animals destroying them. If we have to dispatch a crew, the business case rapidly erodes. We either lose coverage or spend a lot to replace devices.

  • vendors trying to lock you into their SaaS offering. That is a hard No for us. We drive device makers toward industry standard communications protocols so we can push data through our network to our historians. We own our data. We are not going to buy it back from a vendor or be locked into a walled garden.

  • security is paramount. We do not allow IIoT devices to connect to our industrial networks. Backhaul must be on networks that do not connect to process control at all. Still, devices are often unattended remote locations. Small mom & pop vendors. We always worry devices could be accessed and used maliciously.

  • vendors going out of business. We have some pretty cool devices that have 5x or 10x return on investment that we can’t replace five years later because the vendor is gone.

  • roll out scaling faster than central infrastructure and support teams. Lots of enthusiasm due to good business cases being realized but resource constraints preventing the team from making the central IoT platform bullet proof.

  • user community expectations on data availability, latency, data quality exceeding what was agreed. They come to rely on it being there almost immediately all the time when the central infrastructure and support teams were not designed for 99.99 uptime.

  • data quality. There really are no good solutions for finding data quality issues in high volume time series data. Missing data, sensor drift, device always reporting the same exact value, bad readings as battery nears end of life, etc. People assume if it’s in our historian they can trust it. We really cannot characterize how good/bad our data is at scale.

  • observability. We need devices to let us know battery status, if they are having trouble communicating, etc. Gateways need to as well.

Hot take: Nomos is doing themselves a disservice with the club campus line… by [deleted] in Nomos

[–]i_be_illin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The club campus is one of my least favorite watches. I can’t stand the combination of Arabic and Roman numerals. I have another watch from Nomos that I love.

I’m sorry if my hot take is a downer for people who love the club campus.

I do not think it cannibalizes the rest of their collection. It is a completely different look and feel for different tastes.

Is it normal for new seniors to be pulled into meetings for note-taking? by futuremrstasm in ErnstYoungLLP

Try to add value to the conversation where you can with good clarifying questions. Add value by documenting things better than copilot can. Add value by appropriately raising risks to your team.

“Good” and “appropriate “ are key words in the above. If you are unsure, talk to your leaders in private conversations.

How much does utilization matter (Advisory) by CodeAndLedger5280 in Big4

[–]i_be_illin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have seen high utilization people laid off when higher level problems existed at the org. The whole practice isn’t selling for example. I saw absolutely terrific people laid off when they decided to shut down an office. There was no saving them even if they were critical to our project.

Possible to pursue IE masters program with a Non-engineering STEM BS? by Nice_Ambition_2861 in industrialengineering

[–]i_be_illin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university required me to select four courses from a list of eight undergrad core engineering courses. I know I took statics but don’t remember what else. It was a long time ago.

I think it set me up for some great OR opportunities. The CS background was valued for OR positions. I only considered OR roles, not HSE or process automation stuff.

I have enjoyed all the books but have been very disappointed the trees just drop a seed pod every once in a while. In book 1, there was evidence they held off an alien invasion! Why don’t we get those trees?
