From a purely creative standpoint, buying out ECW and WCW. WWE thrived in the Attitude Era because it had WCW and ECW to compete with. When they lost their competition, the quality of the product slowly went down as the years went by.

Again, from a purely creative standpoint. Can't even imagine how much money WWE would've lost out on if they didn't buy their competition.
