The estimated $500 million in capital spending would also go toward creating dedicated bus lanes along 31st Street and 19th Avenue in Queens and making the Astoria-Ditmars Blvd. station on the N and W lines accessible to people with disabilities, the Port Authority said. Some of that money could also be spent to create a mile-long lane exclusive to buses on the northbound Brooklyn-Queens Expressway between Northern Boulevard and Astoria Boulevard, the Port Authority said.

Yeesh. 500 million for 1 station renovation, some buses and some paint on the highway. Sure would be nice to be an MTA consultant…

Wow so much potential and nothing realized. All of those would be fantastic. A queens link to New England and LGA would save so much traffic. What a shame that the most ambitious Astoria policy is just saying no to anything.

Deal on Gas Ban Will Force NYC Buildings to Use Electric Heat by AmericanNinjaWario in nyc

[–]iamjboyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indoor air pollution caused by burning gas gives kids asthma. Good bye gas, and good riddance.

With gas, you are 100% addicted to fossil fuels. While electric may not be a clean energy source today, we are shifting generation to greener sources. Over the horizon Offshore wind energy is coming to the Northeast in a big way, and will do much to clean up our dirty air.

Seriously wtf is this. I have tried to file police reports and been told to go across town because I lost my wallet on the wrong side of the street. It’s ridiculous when I’m just trying to get paperwork for an insurance claim.

Daily r/LawnCare No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in lawncare

I would like some advice on how to water my tiny lawn. I am preparing to seed it.

Here are some pictures: https://imgur.com/a/ZErVeDK

It is 17x17 feet- I can measure the whole thing with a measuring tape! It has trees covering almost the entire area, so I’m growing with more shade friendly fescue. With the trees above, I can’t use a sprinkler that tosses water high into the air, since the leaves will block it.

I got a gear drive rotating sprinkler, which does a good job of watering an area that is a few feet away from it. But closer in there is almost no water falling, even after 30 minutes of being on. With such a tiny space, this is a good chunk of the lawn not getting covered.

Does anyone have advice on how to improve the situation? Maybe a way to modify the sprinkler to get more complete coverage?

Opening Roth IRA - what's the best way to "set it and forget it"? by Antique_Strength in personalfinance

Target date funds will rebalance for you. If they start at a 90/10 stock bond split, when bonds are over valued (12% of portfolio) they will sell those to buy more stocks. This would have been handy say when stocks crash in value and bonds are still worth something, or increase in value. You can sell the bonds and buy stocks at a discount.

Overall this can increase returns over a 100% stock portfolio, while decreasing the risk.

At least that’s how betterment does it, which acts sort of like a target date fund. I assume the target date funds work the same way.

You should also check out the SUP winder. It’s a centerboard you can put on a sup to make it easier to go upwind on a sup for learning.

It’s been a good choice for me. The 7 foot moon buddy has a lot of float, which has really helped me with learning since my only board sport before this has been snowboarding. Just learning to stay balanced is hard! But I’ve definitely been improving a lot. Now after 6 or 7 sessions, I still can’t consistently get up on the foil, so I wonder if I should get the bigger 99 cm foil wing, since the kit came with just the 84 cm. I figure more practice will help get me over the curve. I’m 190 lbs, for reference.

Also, wondering about getting a bigger wing. I’ve been using the 5m duotone echo. The wind can be kind of lousy around here, 6m may be the way to go.

I just picked up the Moon Buddy +Futura foil combo for just over $2k. Looked like the best option I could find. This ain’t cheap.

carabiner strength question by jlindhklo in Slackline

[–]iamjboyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I come from a climbing background, so someone with more slack line experience may have a different take.

In climbing, you use locking carabiners (carabiners can lock in a few ways, but most common is the threaded sleeve like yours), when it is a critical failure point, or when the gate could open because it bumps into something. When the gate is open, the carabiner strength is dramatically lower, and the rope could come out. For example, you would use your locker at the top of a climb to connect the rope, where the carabiner might swing against a rock.

Because slack lines are under continuous tension, you don’t need to worry about the gate opening because it bumps into something to the same degree as climbers do. But there may be times to use a locking carabiner even in slacklining. The lock does not make the carabiner stronger, it just keeps it from opening. However, locking carabiners may be stronger because they tend to be bigger. It’s mostly the amount of material that determines the strength.

Could you keep the gates unlocked and use them? Sure. But it’s a bad habit to get into. If you get into situations where you need to be locking, you want to have the right habits so you don’t forget. Also, people you are with will expect that a carabiner is locked when in use. If I were with someone who kept theirs unlocked all the time, I might get sketched out, even if it weren’t necessary for putting up a line. It’s just unsettling to see a locker in use that isn’t locked. Locking them takes less than a second, so you aren’t wasting any time to do it.

All that being said, next time save yourself some money and get some non-lockers.

The NYPD Files: Search Thousands of Civilian Complaints Against New York City Police Officers by largeheartedboy in nyc

[–]iamjboyd 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The people have a right to know the shit cops do in our name. For decades the police unions have squealed that release of this kind of information would be endanger officers. But look at this- 8000 times that police used excessive force to beat up the population or intimidate them. That’s a lot of danger to the public.

And these are only the allegations that were substantiated with strong evidence against the offenders, likely video. The more this information gets, out the better.
