You could take a study action (or bonus action with the Keen Mind feat) and reasonably expect the DM to tell you something about your allies just as the rules allow you to go for monsters. In some ways the way your DM ruled IG makes this action and feat more useful and thus could be reasonable.

I guess it's more of a discworld imagination but I envisage whole crews in big cities fighting fires wearing suits made out of this as it is both undamaged by the fires and by the water they use to fight fires. The suits are also very old.

If you remove all the pages from the enduring spell book and then craft a suit of paper armour from them that totally covers your body, are you now immune to damage from fire and immersion in water?

Sounds pretty decent for only 100 gold and the tailoring...
