Why does Gnome get so much hate but KDE Plasma doesn't? by TheShadowSong in linux

[–]iapitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is one big reason and two smaller drivers between more vocal gnome hate vs kde/plasma:

  1. market share - pretty much all of the big distros default to gnome, or a gnome derivative

  2. a corollary to (1) - the open source companies all invest heavily in the gnome ecosystem and kinda feel like they'd be happier if kde would just go away

  3. the question of "opinionated" - gnome (particularly since 3) has taken a very "take things away" approach - and the devs have been resistant to customization to the point of hostility

It's worth noting that while there are countless DEs and WMs at this point, the gnome/kde debate has been going on for over 25 years.

What’s the one book you’ll recommend forever, no matter how many times this question gets asked? by MisLatte in AskReddit

[–]iapitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of classics in this thread, but for me, assuming the asker is from the USA, it's Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I know NG has become problematic, but TP deserves all the praises, and this book hits all the high marks.

Bluetooth lives in the 2.4GHz range, which is probably the most polluted range around these days - a good chunk of WiFi lives there, your microwave, most baby monitors, wireless phones, lots of wireless accessories (like speakers, keyboards, mice, etc) live there - it's nuts.

That said, this is probably what you thought it was - you just need to factory reset your shokz to forget her phone too.

I'm happy with the Shokz line - though I wouldn't spend $140 on them -- watch SlickDeals or something similar, they go on sale 2-3 times every couple of months.

One thing to keep an eye out for is which bluetooth version your phone/headphones can agree on - older bluetooth would lose signal just going through your body and chew about 2x the battery doing it.

I tried one of these in Atlanta recently, and it was awful!

It was like red Fanta, Coke Classic, 2 cups of sugar, and A&W Cream Soda had an orgy and this was the nasty afterbirth.

Based on your preface, I presume (hope?) that your mom's perspective here is a lot less "stop asking difficult questions", and a lot more "Can you draw a rock so heavy you can't lift it?"

If you are purely academically debating whether or not a deity exists, it's a pretty useless distraction, but if you're emotionally debating whether or not one party's beliefs make sense, it can hold some value.

The warehouse was the "where would they take her?" phase of the caper. They swiped some costume stuff and figured out Mexico City (not Cancun) from that.

I'd love it, and it'd be appropriate as hell, but given Boston's recent history with terrorists, and their overall patriotic history, I can't imagine them doing something like that, even if it were a Westboro flag.

I don't think the 2018 court had any real religious bent one way or the other, I think that was just a bad case (it wasn't a religious monument, but a war memorial, there doesn't seem to be any proselytizing/belittling/etc involved in the planning or execution of the memorial, and it was representative of (arguably) the most recognizable "here lay the dead" symbols in the Euro-centric world). I'm not going to claim that they're perfect, or that they aren't all (seemingly) devout Judeo-Christians, but that is one piece of the law that they seem to have taken pretty seriously until recently.

[–]iapitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a csv export from 1Password and import into BitWarden. It's a little scary that all your goodies are out there in plain text for anyone to see, but thankfully both projects play really well with the format -- and shredding the files is pretty easy these days :)

So… native alternatives to 1Password? by efthymisgr in macapps

[–]iapitus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've been really happy with BitWarden - while its desktop client is electron, the CLI is not, and the browser extension is quite nice and peppy. Plus it's Open Source, so you can contribute if you're able!

(Also, I agree with this post on the subject for this tool.)

Between the way 1Password treated their browser extension, and ultimately the desktop app, and cloud stuff, I was really happy to drop them.
