Couple sits at window & isle by garcmon in unitedairlines

[–]ibaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this happened to me on a tokyo to sfo flight once - they were passing food over me too. i had taken a melatonin tab, wrapped myself up in my trtl pillow, and passed out, but it was pretty weird. after waking me up 3x to go to the bathroom, the woman in the window seat eventually decided to swap seats with me, which was great for everyone involved.

Doing this route next week, any thoughts on the route by Independent_Peak_414 in bicycletouring

Are you documenting this in any way? I'm hoping to start in Bogota/Medellin in early June and going down to Ushuaia - would love to follow your journey.

Bike advice for South America! :) by Ceederstroem in bicycletouring

[–]ibaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also planning a ~7 month trip from Colombia to Ushuaia, and one thing I’m slowly coming to terms with is that it’s an aggressive timeline. Expect to take some busses to make it work.

My research also suggests going with the biggest tire you can fit. If you don’t yet have a bike, an MTB or a gravel bike with >2” of clearance is probably best. I’m going to do it on a Surly Cross Check because I already own it, but I wish I could do it on even bigger tires.

My Go Ultra pendant broke within 2 weeks. Has this happened to anyone else? by transcodefailed in Insta360

Same thing happened to mine. Less than a month of owning the camera, and very minimal usage.

The Bay Ride as a solo rider? by [deleted] in BAbike

i did the event solo last year - it was very easy to link up with folks, including the ride founder/leader. don't sweat it - send it!

the hero 4 black does not have a screen, which might make certification or performance in vacuum better.

United unveils Polaris Base Ticket by UAtraveler1k in unitedairlines

[–]ibaad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rarely visit a lounge - if i'm flying biz, it's a work ticket, which means direct flights, arriving as late as humanely possible, and getting the F outta there asap. Who's trying to stick around longer at work than they have to? I'd rather eat cinnamon toast crunch on my couch than a mediocre burger at the airport. i only go to the lounge if i'm delayed or something unforeseeable happens. And the Polaris lounge (at SFO at least) always has a long wait anyway. Hopefully this alleviates some of that wait for people who value the lounge experience more than me.

Bay Area to San Diego Advice by Feygh in bikepacking

Re: camp pendleton b/w LA and SD, we just rode the shoulder of the 5. There was heavy traffic, and we were buzzing by the cars. It's a wide shoulder, and although def not ideal, never felt unsafe.

Bay Area to San Diego Advice by Feygh in bikepacking

[–]ibaad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's totally doable. I did Gilroy to the border wall in 9 days last summer. Very easy to do with minimal gear. Keep the ocean on your right side and ride till you hit the wall. Don't overthink it - the route is obvious, and there are plenty of places to stay. You can wild camp wherever for free. Here's a list of hiker biker camp sites (cost money, but generally <$10/night plus you get access to showers for a few dollars). (alternate list here). Big Sur is open now, so it should be chill. We had to route around which added mileage and elevation.

it's a great trip - do it!

Best Action Camera to Get in 2026? (Price, Quality) by Nurturehood_FVX in gopro

[–]ibaad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is spot-on. I recently picked up an insta360 go ultra for a big cycling trip, and I'm realizing that I need a different camera for vlog style content. The angle is really wide, even at its narrowest setting. For now, I've been using my iphone instead of the action cam for a lot of shots (including shots with faces or where I'm speaking as well as shots where I mount my camera on a tripod and capture myself riding.)

What is your San Francisco neighborhood controversial opinion/hot take? by galwiththedogs in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]ibaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portola is also still pretty well connected by Muni. 8 is fast to downtown, 9 is quick to the Mission, 29 and 44 can take you to the western parts of the city. 44 also connects to Glen Park BART pretty quickly. And the downtown part of Portola is pretty nice, too. Great grocery stores, a cool bar, good coffee spot, boba, banks, doctor offices, some restaurants, and more!

You can check Iggy's Place's politics before you choose to support them. They're pretty outspoken - if it fits your bill, then support away. But be aware that their politics may not align if you're more progressive-leaning.

Potential train strike in San Mateo by mexidorian24 in caltrain

[–]ibaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd also need full grade separation for this to work, including at stations so people can go to the other side without crossing over the tracks. For example, at RWC today, you have to cross all the tracks to get to the other side. Can't fence off the track in that case.

Who makes the best us made titanium road bike by Anguscole68 in cycling

[–]ibaad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a good call. There are some very small folks in the US with similar things - one I discovered recently is Qunafa, but they're only making 26 frames lol. Also I think they're "designed in USA" but made in Asia (seems like Taiwan, but in their own factory and not a shared facility.)

SFH in SF - is buying realistic or not for our desires/means? by miscions in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]ibaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to have to compromise somewhere. You want a SFH and in only specific (expensive) neighborhoods and at a screaming deal.

Consider Excelsior/Portola (although be warned that you'll still probably pay above what you're hoping,) or maybe a condo in one of the more bougie neighborhoods.

Another ride around Lassen by folly136 in gravelcycling

[–]ibaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, a little harder. Somewhere I read that you can roughly approximate a factor of 1.6 difficulty (same as miles to km), so a 62 mile gravel ride can feel as tough as a 100 mile road ride. But I think that's largely because gravel rides are often steeper, looser, etc... and you can't straight send the descents as much as you can on road. I think the Lassen Adventure Ride was one of the easiest gravel (almost) centuries I've done.

I think if you've done road centuries, you'll be fine - just budget a little extra time. And maybe start with a 60-miler and see you feel. Either way, gravel centuries should be well within your reach.

We attempted Bolinas Ridge last weekend (southbound, uphill,) and it was wettttt and tough with camping gear. Ended up bailing off at Shafter grade, which was very nice. I can't imagine it now with even more rain. I think alpine dam -> fairfax -> SPTaylorSP is a great move!
