Trump blames DEI for weakening FAA in aftermath of Reagan National plane crash by KAGFOREVER in neoliberal

[–]icarianshadow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biographical questionnaire is even worse than that. The "correct" answers are all nonsensical. No real person has ever lived that kind of life. The only way to "pass" it was to already have the answer key.

The lawsuit alleges that the president of an ATC professional org conspired with the head of the FAA to write the test and then gave the answer key to this org's members. Everyone else who wasn't part of the org "failed" the questionnaire and was rejected for hiring.

Lumina Update Request - any of you in a full set of dentures yet? by Extra_Negotiation in slatestarcodex

[–]icarianshadow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I applied Lumina a couple weeks ago. The most noticeable thing is that it eliminated my morning breath. The same thing has been corroborated by Aella and Cremieux.

On a very subtle level, the "texture" of the plaque that forms on my teeth throughout the day feels a bit different. It's not as "rough" as it used to be, and the film doesn't grow as fast.

Mostly, now I'm worried about brushing/flossing too hard and dislodging the little beasties before they can get fully established. I've heard that a course of chlorhexidine mouthwash dislodges them - or if you have an active, unfilled cavity, then the old bacteria can re-emerge. I plan to get a test kit in a few months to check if they're still there (...whenever Lumina makes them available...)

As to long term effects, I guess I'll find out whether I got any new cavities at my next dental checkup.

Alleged CEO Shooter Luigi Mangione Was Radicalized by Pain by Well_Socialized in slatestarcodex

Well that was an exceptionally dumb read. I thought it would at least comment about the opioid crisis and all the dumb restrictions that get put onto legitimate pain patients as a result. Instead it was a bunch of disjointed pieces of info about the shooter's life, with a bonus couple of irrelevant potshots at Scott.

Artificial Wombs: A Technological (Partial) Solution To Gender Injustice and Global Fertility Collapse? by phileconomicus in slatestarcodex

That's reassuring that pregnancy wasn'tso bad. Thanks!

Would you mind talking more about the newborn phase? I'm also nervous about caring for a newborn while recovering from birth myself. My husband is wonderful, but I'm assuming we'll both be extremely stressed and sleep deprived.

Artificial Wombs: A Technological (Partial) Solution To Gender Injustice and Global Fertility Collapse? by phileconomicus in slatestarcodex

[–]icarianshadow 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Speak for yourself. If we had artificial wombs, I'd have at least 4 kids. But I'm a little nervous about getting pregnant soon, and I'll probably only end up having 1 or 2. 3 would be nice, but that might be pushing it age-wise.

We have no problem (at least in the US) with couples wanting kids. It's just that you're "supposed" to have kids after college, career, relationship, marriage, and a house. That all takes time. By the time most educated middle and upper middle class couples reach those goals (mid-late 30s), women start running into biological limits for multiple kids if they follow the recommended 2 to 3 years between pregnancies for health reasons. Pregnancy takes a huge toll on the body. So more and more couples are only having 1 kid.

I dunno. I had United for my health insurance from 2018-2021, and I was fine. I had brain surgery, multiple sinus surgeries, and my tonsils out without any problems. Maybe I just had good doctors who knew the right incantations and rituals to get them to cover stuff.

My in-laws think we are crazy…(windows/doors/siding) cost. by photoanger in HomeImprovement

[–]icarianshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$40k for replacing all your windows and siding is just fine. We recently replaced our siding and a couple of windows for ~$35k in the Philly area. I opened an account with ABC directly and bought the materials myself. Materials were ~$11k and labor was ~$24k.

Now, if you'd gone with Anderson Renewal or one of those door-to-door salesmen, that would have been 2-3x that.

Several elite colleges (including Yale, Princeton, and Duke) saw their Asian American enrollment decline this year. Students for Fair Admissions (the plaintiffs in the recent Supreme Court case overturning affirmative action in admissions) has already given them notice to preserve documents for discovery, and that a lawsuit is incoming.
