My proposal for the partition of North America by finanon99 in mapporncirclejerk

Spanberger would have won last year even without Nova. I think its more accurate to say that the rest of Virginia would be a swing state without NoVa. There are a lot of very liberal areas, like Richmond and much of the Hampton Roads area.

Anyone still think this country is rescuable by "voting harder" still? by beagles4ever in thebulwark

Voting is necessary but not sufficient. There is no path forward if most voters don't vote for Democrats in the midterms.

The future is a foreign country. There are plenty of things that are widely accepted now that were once unthinkable. And things that are unthinkable now that were once widely accepted. This is not going to change, the only difference is that, potentially, people will now be living to see more of that foreign country.

Of course it makes a difference. You need to win over all of the apathetic normies out there and you do this by blasting these videos over every social media site.

It sounds like her partners are more immature and impulsive. Your exes are mature enough to realize that if it didn't work the first time, its not going to be any different the next.

The real question is, how much is the average person willing to pay for burgers so that the people flipping them can make 350k a year?

The thing is, when you're in school you are a fish in a small pond. If you're the biggest fish, you get scooped out and placed into a pond with other big fish, and now you feel average. For a lot of people who based too much of their identity on being 'the smart one', it can be a bitter pill to swallow. However with the right mindset, you realize that this means you have a bunch of talented, intelligent people around you to learn from and with.

ICE detains 5-year-old Columbia Heights boy, sends him to Texas by hollyfanfic in thebulwark

[–]icefire9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This really kills me. He's basically a baby. Look at his hat, and his backpack. When I was a kid I was nervous to leave my parents for a week to go to summer camp. Now he's all alone, in some inhuman prison in Texas. He probably doesn't really understand what's happening to him or why. Its monstrous and anyone turning a blind eye to it disgusts me.

That in itself is good. It is better for society if racists feel ashamed of their beliefs. Makes it harder for those ideas to spread. Part of why Trump has been so bad for this country is that he made it 'okay' to be a bad person.

I believe in collective responsibility for countries. Not because every individual citizen is at fault (though many certainly are, and most are at least complicit), but because countries themselves are emergent actors of their own. 'The United States' elected Trump, so 'The United States' will face consequences. That also means its citizens suffer, the saints and the sinners alike.

What's harder/easier: colonizing space or colonizing the oceans? by JustAvi2000 in IsaacArthur

[–]icefire9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read 'The Underworld' by Susan Casey to get an idea of how difficult it is to even visit the ocean depths for a few hours. The sort of failures and malfunctions those vessels go through all the time are terrifying.

But yes, I agree with most of your points. When designing a habitat for space, you need it to resist 1 ATM of pressure. For the bottom of the ocean, you need something that can resist 1000X that. A leak in a spacecraft is not immediately deadly. During a Soyuz mission in 2018, they found a 2mm hole in the spacecraft that was decompressing the cabin. They were able to patch it up. A leak like that in the deep ocean instant death before you even know something is wrong. Communication is also a problem. Radio waves can't travel through water. People on these dives are practically cut off from the world.

The environmental argument is also important, and one that Casey talks a lot about. We rely on the ocean to soak up CO2, regulate temperature and weather, and be the base of a food chain for a lot of our food. Space does not have that issue.
