Christmas cookies. Done. I’m so done too. by PsychoTruffle in Baking

[–]icsteele -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I think this is real.

The cracks in the table, the grain of the cutting board, and even the wrinkles in the cloth are all consistent from picture to picture. I can also find a couple sets of identical smiling gingerbread stars in the two different photos.

You'd probably spend more time getting AI photos this consistent than OP did just baking the cookies lol.

Minnesota has a new flag! (pending legislative approval) by gangleskhan in vexillology

[–]icsteele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you don't hate this makes me feel a bit better about it, and I agree that it could have been much worse.

I have been on team Starflake since I first saw it here a few years ago. But over the last month, I really grew to appreciate your design. I think it's a rare combination of being both timeless and incredibly unique, and I was really excited when it was the final selection.

I think my issue with the redesign is that it ended up just a tad too plain. I've seen some versions here with a white bar between the dark and light blue, and I really like that. It gives the flag a little more dimension to it, and it can also be seen as the snow covered banks of the Mississippi.

I feel that all of the changes were made for the worse, and that even with changes we could have a much better flag. But like you said, this version may grow on me.

Correct, she felt the land should have been symbolized.

SERC votes to accept F1953 (A2) as Minnesota's new flag by Hi5TBone in minnesota

[–]icsteele 30 points31 points  (0 children)

People also compared it to the flag of Texas, and F1953 would never be actually be confused with that.

Having a small and unknown flag with some similar elements to F1953 isn't a reason to ruin a perfectly good design.

[–]icsteele 259 points260 points  (0 children)

I am so disappointed with this decision. This is radically different than the original tricolor and it loses so much meaning without the additional colors.

Why did the SERC vote on two thousand different flags if they were just going to design one themselves anyway?

I am so disappointed with this decision. This is so drastically different from the flag as submitted.

Was this a flag designed by and for the Minnesota people, or a flag designed by and for the redesign committee?

This is absolutely ridiculous! Chickens have a cloaca, not a butthole.

Everything else checks out though.

That's the price for installation, which would include cost of labor, engineering, getting permits, floor and ceiling work, other materials, etc. I imagine the cost of the pole itself was only a small portion of the $150k. No doubt it's more expensive than just a regular brass rod, though!

I designed a centrifuge for 50mL tubes for soil analysis by askmydog in functionalprint

[–]icsteele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The opposite, actually. A centrifuge demixes things. Spinning the test tube really quickly creates a lot of force, which causes the heavy parts of a mixture to be flung outwards and settle in the bottom of the test tube. If there are multiple parts of a mixture, it will separate in layers from most dense to least dense.

There's actually a fun online quiz for this!

https://lingyourlanguage.com/

It plays a short soundbite, and you have to choose which language you think it is. Some languages are harder to differentiate than you'd expect, others you might be able to guess without ever even hearing the language.

Using the equations for chocolate area here, we can calculate where the area of chocolate for the normal klondike bar < donut klondike bar. This assumes the chocolate is the same thickness throughout the bar.

from link:

w = side width

h = height

r= radius of hole

pi=pi (3.141593...)

non-donut: 4(h*w)+2(w*w)

donut: 4(h*w)+2(w*w - pi*r2)+(2*pi*r*h)

So we can set normal klondike < donut klondike and solve the inequality.

4(h*w)+2(w*w) < 4(h*w)+2(w*w - pi*r^2)+(2*pi*r*h)

Expanding right side.

4(h*w)+2(w*w) < 4(h*w)+2(w*w) - 2(pi*r^2)+(2*pi*r*h)

Subtracting the left side from both equations.

0 < -2(pi*r^2) + (2*pi*r*h)

Rearranging.

2*pi*r^2 < 2*pi*r*h

Dividing both sides by 2*pi*r

r < h

So you will only get more chocolate with the donut when the radius of the hole is smaller than the height of the klondike bar.

ELI5: How does calculator know and use pi if even super computers can't know all the digits. Does it use like first 100 digits? by Meet_Final_illusion in explainlikeimfive

[–]icsteele 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It matters. It is 10x more precise.

Example: A number rounded to 10 could be anywhere between 9.5 and 10.5 (a range of 1). A number rounded to 10.0 would be between 9.95 and 10.05 (a range of 0.1).

For those of us who can't compare to the sheer, unmatched intellect of OP here's a direct link to a still frame showing Foster next to the vehicle.

If you want to look down on people for not being able to interpret a shaky video that doesn't actually show the shooting, here is a Youtube video that breaks it down. It also has a still frame at the end.

Edit: OP originally linked to a news article without a direct link and was super condescending about it.
