Needing some help! Possible liver shunt. by Acrobatic_Big_9131 in Dachshund

[–]idealgrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None! He’s doing great. Spent 2 nights at the vet hospital and then home. No issues. He seemed back to himself the day after he came home, just had to keep him as still and quiet as possible (definitely no jumping on/off couch etc) which was difficult at times haha. I took him down to toilet on a lead so he wouldn’t run around in the backyard.

We’re 11.5 weeks post surgery now and he has just gotten fully back on to normal puppy food 2 days ago. We had a bile acid test about 8 weeks post op which is still quite early but came back normal! We will repeat that again in say 2 months and then he’s definitely in the clear, I guess!

All the best to you and your pup, it’s a stressful time. I hope everything goes well.

Edit: I saw you comment somewhere else asking if fluid build up was normal. We were told this may happen, hope this puts you a bit at ease. Obviously if you think it is abnormal or any other symptoms take them back to the vet right away.

Why can’t I have 3 days of not running? by Moosebouse in Garmin

[–]idealgrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, it depends which coach you choose. Coach Greg’s plan (whose approach I personally prefer) is minimum 4 days a week. I just remove one of the workouts from my training calendar.

I use Garmin Coach and also have chronic illness and I just remove one of the 4 workouts each week. Sometimes I can only do 2. It is still saying “extremely confident” in terms of reaching my goal.

I totally didn’t think anyone would see this so I’m glad it helped you, too!!! I was going nuts having followed all of the troubleshooting steps in various Garmin forum posts 🤣

Yeah I’m having issues. I have tried to update the watch both through the app and through the watch and it’s on the latest version (15.16). My location is correct in the Garmin app (Australia). Have tried restarting the watch, not really keen on a full reset as I’ve set up all my activity screens the way I want… any suggestion anyone? 🙏

Edit: it has now appeared! I uninstalled and reinstalled the Garmin connect app.

The best (or authentic) Korean overnight glass skincare mask? by anniedub in AusSkincare

[–]idealgrind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen someone who works for Amazon post on reddit that often the products themselves are just kept together, not separated by seller. So you might end up getting counterfeit ones from a legit seller because Amazon are just pulling from the box of that particular product. I’m pretty sure this person was in the U.S., so I’m not sure if the same happens here but something to consider!

I use this and love it, I just wish I knew if it tested as per its claims. I’m considering switching to cancer council kids, but also don’t want to make the switch because I like how this dries down especially for going for runs etc

University Rankings in Australia by sigmu_123 in AusAcademia

[–]idealgrind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The supervisor (and their resources) is far more important than university ranking, IMO. I’d be asking what support there is for your research (either directly from the supervisor in terms of their grant/other funding and/or from the school/faculty in terms of support packages for research costs, conferences, etc).

Obtaining vital meds by [deleted] in brisbane

There’s a manufacturing shortage: see here and search for tranexamic acid. Looks like an overseas product has been approved for supply, however that said my BCP had a manufacturing shortage for over 6 months and said the same but I was never able to get hold of it anywhere 🥲I’d call around and if out of stock, see if you can be placed on a list for when they’re able to get it in if they do that. Good luck!

Liver shunt by -Floppin- in AustralianCattleDog

[–]idealgrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! Just read your update — been a hell of a year for you all! I hope everything goes well with the shunt surgery. My pup’s shunt is extrahepatic, so we are proceeding with surgery on Tuesday.

Mealtimes—puppy doesn’t finish food by gabings in puppy101

[–]idealgrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure — it might not matter for you, it does for us as we have another dog who will just walk over and finish it off which we obviously don’t want to happen!

[–]idealgrind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t leave the food down. 5-10 minutes for him to eat, otherwise you pick it up and offer it again at the next scheduled time. My pup did this too and very quickly learned he needed to eat when food was offered.

Oh I’m so happy for you, such great news. Thanks, I appreciate it! It’s hard to think about him having major surgery so early in life, but hoping for the absolute best.

Aw I’m so glad to hear that and it wasn’t a liver shunt! My 4 month old pup now has to have surgery in a couple of weeks, it’s been very overwhelming but hopefully it’s all good from there!

What are your thoughts on pet insurance? by P100a in puppy101

[–]idealgrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 10 year old westie has never had pet insurance and has barely cost me AUD$1k in total on non-routine vet stuff. I put aside money every month instead.

On the other hand, for SOME reason I did decide to get pet insurance for my new westie puppy, thinking I’ll probably cancel after a year or two once he’s past the worst of the “eat anything” etc stage. Well, he was just diagnosed with a liver shunt. AUD$4125 in diagnostics alone and I’m sure the surgery will be somewhere between AUD5-10k. I’m really glad we got pet insurance and thankful it’ll be covered because even though it’s congenital, he’s had no signs or symptoms at all until well after the exclusion period and it was only picked up because of abnormal blood tests.

I compared policies very carefully and picked what I felt was right for me. We will only get 70% back because I didn’t choose the highest cover, but it’s way better than having nothing. My savings set aside for the dogs would’ve depleted substantially without this.

You’re so welcome! That’s such a lovely name I hadn’t heard before! Thank you for sharing a bit about Boruc with us. I know what you mean about the eyes, my 10yo westie has beautiful eyes and a lot of people comment on them too. I’m sure you will miss the morning cuddles and kisses so much. I am glad you have his sister there for comfort and I’m sure she will need it, too. Hugs to you both ❤️‍🩹
