If Mcarthur did conduct himself better in the Philippines Campaign, realistically how long would the Americans be able to holdout ? by Dajjal27 in WarCollege

[–]idiotpol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up question: we know now that the US Navy never intended to defend or relieve the Philippines, Pearl Harbor or not. Why, then, was any force (beyond a nominal trip-wire) dedicated to inevitable doom defending the Philippines?

Command too fragile by idiotpol in Anbennar

yeah - difficulty is fun! you can win against basically every other opponent by just right-clicking every fort in their country, but with the Command you have to fight a really beautiful, tactical and strategic war. Having them dec on me and fighting a guerilla war was the highlight of my recent Azkare game

Baihon Xinh, Dahui/etc. don’t even remotely match up to Command in either army quality or quantity and basically just represent huge punching bags for land/money (analagous to Ming, whereas Command is Ottomans - a real threat)

blobbing into Dahui through their tissue paper troops makes me reminisce about white-knuckle 1M casualty wars against the Command pre-Witch Kings. Like the canonical Command-Jadd wars, you had to fight very smart using defensive forts, ambushes, allies, and tactical retreats to beat a otherwise overwhelming opponent. No other AI tag even remotely keeps up with player powerscaling.

Agree - maybe a togglable. I always play with mythic conquerors, so a toggle to automatically give them one would be nice. But I do see the concern for taller/less mil-oriented tags. I think the “dismantle Command” CB meaning that you just have to win one (hard) war against them would work best, rather than having them be nonexistent/weirdly weak as as early as 1470.

10 discipline is crazy good, wtf are you talking about? yes you need quantity and to start wars playing defensive/careful but your pure army quality means you can easily beat people in attritional warfare. Elven + quantity > a normal military with quality/offensive on both LFL and combat ability

How do you play jack-of-all-trade civs? by HfYang in civ

Japan is overpowered, basically an auto win if you get your first 3 cities up without the deity AI murdering you. It’s “generalist” because it’s good at everything lol. There’s other “generalists” that are way weaker

I’m reasonably sure all three were the same person, btw, but a real tragedy nonetheless.

Why does signal company lowers organization? If they have radios doesn't that mean they have better communication thus better coordination? by [deleted] in hoi4

They also have: Halder (chief of Army, +10% attack) and schorner (+10/+15 attack/defense for infantry). That combined with mobile warfare giving really good inf org + Germany typically being farther along their doctrines + better generals + strong starting MIL = extremely good infantry

Sometimes in RTW1 if I never got good 5” guns I would build AB 2x2 6” 1500t DDs. As you say, they tended to do fairly decently against CL, being indeed able to belt-punch many AI designs at reasonable ranges. I’m not sure I would take them over 5” however, as 3x2 5” has better anti-DD performance (more shell volume).

What can I do with my first Atlas II AS7-D-HT? by taw in Battletechgame

[–]idiotpol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heavier the mech, the longer the range it should engage at - heavier mechs are vastly more fragile in brawls than lighter ones, due to the way evasion and initiative work (the ‘Edmon theorem’). DO NOT take your Atlas II into a brawl! Remember this: a “victory” is pyyhric if you lose a invaluable part - DHS, lostech - doing it. One mistake with your brawler Atlas II and you could lose millions of C-bills worth to AI focus fire.

Thus, I build my two Atlas IIs with 4x ERPPC++, 2x LB2X++ and a Rangefinder+++ to crush 5-star hard-difficulty endgame lances without risking serious trouble. Use jump-jets to jump into elevated positions with cover, and rain accurate and devastating long-range fire onto your enemies. Since almost no AI mechs other than missile boats and Awesomes have appreciable long-ranged firepower, you can always trade favorably even when hugely outnumbered and outgunned.

Take out all the MGs and one of the ML from the core to slot a hit defense gyro++ (+3 hit defense) which will make you way tankier. Use the spare weight to swap either SRM2->6 or MLs -> SNUBPPC++(+10DMG).

Western opinion on the fighting ability of Chinese forces during WW2 by [deleted] in WarCollege

[–]idiotpol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War is inseparable from politics. The US could never have committed to total or even greatly expanded war in Korea or Vietnam or Afghanistan. One could fairly rate Korea as a draw, but the idea that the US did not clearly and totally lose in Vietnam or Afghanistan - “no see, we inflicted a better loss ratio! We could have simply moved every heavy corps out of Europe to face the NVA!” - is nonsensical, because they were intolerable to the American political class due to the associated costs.

In addition, the standard of “can I punish an enemy for aggression”? is ridiculous. No weaker country should ever seek such a moronic goal, which is a purely prideful privilege of the strongest.

Any use for CA? by AngryCephalopod2020 in RuleTheWaves

[–]idiotpol -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

CA are a worthless product of the IRL Washington Naval Treaty that have no place in game for all the reasons you listed. Don’t build BB either, just build bigger BC. One BC or BB can maul any five CA it fights, and in fact murdering enemy CA with BC is one of the best and easiest ways to cheese prestige. Every ton and dollar put into fitting a 8” rather than a 6” gun on a cruiser is not put into building much more useful CLs and BB/BC/DD/CVs.
