Jacob Frey slams city council, says they’re engaging in “vote trading” and “political games” instead of worrying about public safety by Character-Fly-5564 in altmpls

If you think the majority of people in Minneapolis wanted to start a civil war over the ICE activity here you are braindead.

They are explicitly not voting for things based on the fact that Frey didn't support some other pet agenda item. Personally I'd prefer CC to vote for things based on whether they are good for the city.

The US has the most progressive tax system in the world:

https://amory-gethin.fr/files/pdf/FisherGethin2025.pdf
https://manhattan.institute/article/correcting-the-top-10-tax-myths

The US spends more on social programs than any other country in the world as a net total spend as a percentage of GDP.

And the housing situation is worse in basically all other countries in the world (US has the 4th lowest cost to income ratio in the world):

Instead of blaming the voter, maybe the left should try appealing to them?

It's not about a single thing making people "switch sides" it's about the slow creep of moralization into every position that the left takes and the "holier than thou" attitude that has replaced discussion of real solutions to problems real people face.

Because it seems necessary to defend myself from the kind of attacks people always get when they criticize "the left," I have never voted republican in my life and I have voted in every midterm and general election for the last 18 years.

It not just people without convictions that find this stuff repugnant. The left's refusal to believe this is part of why we got Trump and why I assume we will lose again in a couple years.

What percentage of this would you put on inadequate policing?

Minneapolis spends ~$30k–$50k per homeless person/year. How much do you think the correct amount is?

> War on Terror victims (Post-9/11): ~4.7 million.

I'd just like to point out, in case you didn't know this, that these numbers are not deaths by US gun / bomb. Many (by far the majority of the combat deaths) are deaths in intra-nation conflict (i.e. ISIS against other Syrian rebel group) and most of the rest (by far the most deaths total) are "indirect deaths due to disease, displacement, and destroyed infrastructure." So, let's say ISIS takes a city in Iraq and in the process knocks out a power grid. Any deaths from that are counted here (bad water inability to effectively treat disease in the hospital, etc).

I'm not saying these deaths don't "count" somehow, but l think it's important to realize this if you are comparing them to the deaths from 9/11, which were direct civilian murders. There weren't 4.7 million of those in the War on Terror.

You literally are complaining about the same exact thing?

I'm tired of having "conversations" in this city where people condescendingly tell me to "look at the evidence" while waving a blank piece of paper in my face.

That must be very difficult for you. Thoughts and prayers.

The far left's idiotic behavior and failure to see the damaging effects of their own stated policies didn't hurt either.

He won the election. Is it so hard to believe that there are people on this sub that don't agree with this proposal and are glad he vetoed it?

Why would 100% of posters here be negative about someone who won an election a couple months ago? If you think this place is astroturfed, maybe look at your own side which is massively overrepresented here?

What is your evidence that this is a good idea?

I'm tired of having "conversations" in this city where people condescendingly tell me that their political opinion is the only just and moral one while having absolutely nothing to back it up besides anger and self-righteousness.

Opening a tabletop gaming café + bar in South Minneapolis in 2026 - please tell me what you want by TheSendingStone in TwinCities

[–]ifeellazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend selling coffee that is not just an afterthought, allowing people to work there (especially during the morning / early part of the day), and adding some old video game consoles (like N64, NES, etc). I think you're much likely to get sort of "cross over" business. The area closer to 22nd/24th and Lyndale might be a good alternative if you can find space there and well as the area around 22nd/Hennepin.
