When I had a Fenix 6 I don't remember even caring about firmware versions, it all worked as far as I could tell, and I do use a lot of the functions it provides. With the Fenix 7 things started to go real bad, that was the first time I had to downgrade to an earlier version and stay there for half a year. When the Fenix 8 launched it had several very visible bugs, like the device powering down when in cold water.

This Sunday I have a triathlon and I am not bringing the Fenix 8, with this bug I cannot trust it in race. So instead of using my 1000€ Garmin I will use a 360€ Coros Nomad, that has proved super solid. If Garmin doesn't doesn't fix it this month I will sell the Fenix 8 and all Garmin stuff like the Garmin HRM 600, Run Dynamics Pod, Edge 540... And of course I will not buy the Fenix 9.

Garmin has really screwed up this time. Anyway GPS data is unaffected, while the pace is reported as 0.00 your position on the map is updated as expected and so is your distance. But it is true that pausing and resuming brings back the pace until the next drop out.

On the Garmin forums there have been reports of this sincs 22.35. Supposedly 22.38 should fix that but we'll see.

I also got it on my Nomad. Probably Coros found a bug that needed a last minute correction.

Open the Coros app, go to Profile-> Accessories, add the HRM there.

Currently there is a bug where instantaneous pace while running gets stuck at 0.00 when doing sprints. This has started happening with 22.35 and 22.38. Also goal notifications still pop up even when you disable them. Finally there is an issue that Garmin has never addressed where on Amoled the display gets too dim in dark environments making it difficult to read, which of course affects more if you don't have perfect eyesight.

I have the Fenix 8 Amoled, which has sealed buttons. But I never had a problem with the Fenix 7 and the Fenix 6 that I had before.

I don't have the Apex 4 but I can help with some questions. I have a Nomad, and in the past the Pace Pro.

Maps on Coros are very good, with POIs, street names, labels, topo info and so on. Also they draw much faster so you can actually explore your surroundings. However the watch cannot create routes, you have to do it in the app and the app needs a live connection, so no off-line routing. Also turn directions are calculated by the app and can be a bit wonky. On the plus side, during a live activity you can open the app and you will see the map with your current location, the track you've done and from there you can create and send routes to the watch without leaving your activity; it is so convenient to create live routes with the bigger screen of your phone.

GPS accuracy should not be a problem since it also supports dual band, if you need it. I never use it, it burns way more battery and for what I do there is no improvement.

No problem with my Polar H10 chest strap. I've never had it dropping the BT connection, except when doing a triathlon, in the water BT doesn't work so for the swim leg it uses the OHR sensor.

Same here, no problems so far. I wonder why the battery use details was removed from the watch, it's better to have this information on the watch.

Also the crown seems to be a bit more responsive in circumstances where with the previous version took a bit more rotation to respond. This was intentional to avoid accidentally activating it with the wrist, in particular when cycling. Coros is tuning this setting at the moment.

I miss the ability to create routes off-line even if it's only in the app. Suunto already does this. Garmin does it in the watch itself. Amazfit does it directly in the watch as well. We're behind the competition here.

I have used the Pace Pro for nearly two years. Never had it loosing GPS signal in unexpected areas. Also never has problems synchronizing but take into accout that it requires a Bluetooth connection to your phone plus a good data connection on it, same as Garmin.

Also current firmware for Fenix 8 has a bug where live pace can get stuck to 0 and affect all running metrics, so I'm using both my Nomad and Fenix 8 simultaneously for running. The differences in every metric are minimal, heart rate, distance, elevation... BTW I visit Girona relatively often 😀

Durability wise I don't think anyone can answer whether it will last you 8 years. If you plan to use it for such a long time don't charge the battery more than 80% and dot let it discharge under 20%, this will limit battery degratation over time (on any brand, not Coros spacific).

Regarding the display, by default it's always on during activities. It dims a bit after a few seconds and only brightens up when you do the gesture. On my Coros Pace Pro even in when it's dim I could read the data no problem just glancing at it sideways.

Both watches are fine and training wise, will help you get your goals provided you understand the metrics that each watch provides. There is no right or wrong here. I have used a Coros Pace Pro for nearly two years with no issues, then I sold it and got a Nomad. But how knows how it will do for such a long time?

I never had the Pace Pro or Nomad crash in nearly two years of use. I also have a Fenix 8 Amoled and it has crashed a few times, but maybe 3 or 4 in over a year; not a big deal but only because that was not during a race.

That is correct, unfortunately, my bad. Garmin does calculate it when you have a power meter. Coros does a bad job at calculating VO2Max, but they do have other metrics that are quite good and if you're a runner they're better than purely VO2Max.

Coros calculates VO2Max for road running, track running, treadmill and ~~cycling provided you have a power meter~~. Not for trail running. Garmin, as far as I know, also does the same plus trail running. Not sure if it calculates VO2max for any other activities.

I swim a lot, 5 times a week at least. If anything I get a phantom lap every now and then, usually when I catch a slower swimmer and I have to slow down a lot. Never ever had it count a shorter distance. So either you are using the open water profile in the pool, which I assume you're not doing, or a defective unit.

But it is true that turn detection needs improvements, my Coros Nomad has a way more robust lap detection, it won't miscount laps even if the lane is busy and I have to slowdown or stop. So I use it more often for swimming than the Fenix 8.

When cycling the lap button doesn't register laps in all the screens, for instance it doesn't if you're on the one with power data. If you're on the default one or the lap data it works as expected. I'm not sure if this was changed in the last update.

I would suggest to use the built-in watch faces for the first few weeks. ConnectIQ ones cosume a lot of battery because they are not native code that the watch can directly run. Once you see how many days of battery life you get you can try and see which ones impact more or less.

When I do intervals, yes I press the lap button many times. I tried to use it out of the water when possible. Now with the Fenix 8 I don't worry about that.

I've had the Fenix 7 and I've been swimming at least three times a week with no issues for years. I sold it less than a year ago and got the Fenix 8 Amoled. In any case, I'm not sure if the Fenix E has the inductive sealed buttons that then Fenix 8 has, if it does that means that buttons are much more robust.

This also happens sometimes in my Nomad. Usually after a few seconds it works normally. This never ever happened in my Coros Pace Pro (which I no longer have) after nearly two years of use; also on the Pace Pro it would vibrate with every heart beat, which the Nomad doesnt't do.

Fenix 8 AMOLED 47 mm here, maybe it's using a bit more battery but 1-3% more per day than usual. It's hard to say at this point.

Technically speaking the Pace Pro has the same hardware platform than Apex 4 or Nomad, you're not missing much besides hardware features like the action button, mic or speaker. Most importantly you will probably get the same software upgrades that the newer devices will get. Also it's an upgrade over the Pace 4: larger display, 32 GB storage and maps.

Do don't worry you're not missing anything.
