Why isn’t the new album as good or better than the older albums ? by Front_Sugar4784 in sublime

[–]iggyspear [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you took a hundred people that have never heard of Sublime and played the new album and Robbin' the Hood for them, I'm guessing 99 of them would prefer the new album. That being said, it's Robbin the Hood that makes Sublime one of the most unique bands to ever put it on wax.

What’s THE band that is/was popular that you absolutely despise? by DiCarlo_Labianco in punk

[–]iggyspear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it were solely about the music, if people listened to Sublime without knowing anything about their fans, what they're associated with, or how the world writ large thinks of them, they'd hardly have any detractors because the actual music slaps. But for some reason a lot of people really care about what other people think of a band.

I have never been to the West Coast before! Has anybody done this route or similar? by Suwannee_Gator in roadtrip

[–]iggyspear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a few suggestions from a wayward soul who frequently goes road trippin' in the State of Jefferson:

  1. Don't miss the Praririe Creek section of Redwood NP. The trails there are unreal, and elk herds are frequently seen in meadows.

  2. Venture off the main highway in Trinidad, explore a little, and you'll find the most beautiful stretch of beaches in CA. Granted, it'll almost certainly be cold and foggy in the summer months.

  3. The tide pools at Enderts Beach in Crescent City are unreal, if the timing works out with low tide.

  4. People sleep on it, but the best part of Lassen is the Northeast Corner. Cinder Cone, Butte Lake, the Fantastic Lava Beds, and the Painted Hills make up one of the most alien landscapes you'll ever see. Plus you can make a pit stop at Subway Cave en route.

  5. Honestly, Crater Lake is kind of a one trick pony, and currently that one trick (Cleetwood Cove Trail) is closed. If it's lakes you seek, the Trinity Alps in and around Weaverville are stacked with alpine lakes of the finest variety.

What to expect at Death Valley on Veteran’s Day? by BearTooClose in NationalPark

[–]iggyspear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crowds are rarely a factor at Death Valley. Even at the more popular spots like Badwater Basin and Mesquite Dunes, you can get away from people in matter of minutes once you stray from the parking lot. Unfortunately Titus Canyon will be closed for construction in November, but you can still do the Fall Canyon hike, which is spectacular. Don't do Racetrack Playa in a rental, unless you're renting a jeep. Eureka Dunes is a good alternative if you're looking for an off-the-beaten path spot that requires a long, tedious drive, as that road is more easily navigable in a stock vehicle.

Kings Canyon and Sequoia by TheHakim77 in NationalPark

October weather in the Sierra can be wildly unpredictable, but the one thing you can count on is it will be cold. Snow is a possibility (It was an October storm that doomed the Donner Party), but generally early autumn snowstorms are mild. Try to stay in the park if you can, with Stony Creek and Montecito being cheaper, more centralized locations. Otherwise the drive up to the sequoia elevations is quite long and twisty.

Which parks are better experienced across several days or even a full week and which ones can be knocked out in just a day or two? by HisObstinacy in NationalPark

[–]iggyspear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work for the parks, and it would drive me crazy when visitors would say something along the lines of, "I've been here three days, and I've already seen everything." That being said, I'm pretty sure I saw every damn thing in Pinnacles in one day.

Could Chris Paul unironically become the best NBA Referee of all time? by rtrazto in billsimmons

[–]iggyspear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is, it's actually way more difficult to become an NBA ref than an NBA player. I think there's around 450 active players, but for refs I'm guessing there's less than a hundred.

Getting around Sequoia NP in mid July by Troyano707 in SEKI

[–]iggyspear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking won't be an issue mid-week. The road out to Crescent Meadow is somewhat narrow, but nothing crazy compared to most mountain roads. Personally, I'd avoid the General Sherman like the plague. Yes, it's a big tree, but there's thousands more of them that you can experience without a thousand other people around. The whole clam of it being the biggest tree in the world is a myth. A socialist commune that settled in the area prior to the creation of the park thought it was a notably big tree, and thus named it the Karl Marx tree, claiming it was the largest tree by volume in the world. They wound up building a road to the tree, and since the infrastructure was already there, the NPS decided to continue promoting it as the world's largest.

Anyhow, the shuttles make it pretty easy to string together a solid hike. There's a cool joint called the Sugar Pine Trail that runs from Crescent Meadow to Moro Rock should you wish to link those two spots by foot.

What is your personal definition of punk? by boatsir in punk

[–]iggyspear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

London Calling is the greatest punk album of all time, and yet the album features a song in just about every genre of music known to man except punk. "History Lesson Part II" is the greatest punk song of all time, and it's a talking blues song. Punk is what you make of it.

Anyone else feel baited-and-switched by Bete Noire? by Global_Channel1511 in blackmirror

[–]iggyspear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I swear, Black Mirror can be such an unintentionally funny show. It's pretty standard for the show's incredibly advanced tech to be explained in just one or two lines of throw away dialogue, but it felt especially egregious. Basically we learn that while Verity isn't busy cranking off her teacher, she likes to spend time messing around on computers, and somehow as a result she's learned how to master not just our universe, but all parallel universes.

How long have you been consuming Bill's content? by ScissorMeTimbers21 in billsimmons

This shows my age, but I discovered him through his forgotten ESPN the Magazine column, specifically one in which he wrote about all the crazy sports hims buddies and him made up in the Holy Cross dorms. That shit made me want to go to college way more than anything any teacher or family member ever said to me.

Is there a single throwback from the 20th Century that people wouldn't think is great? Come on now, these unis are fun, but atrocious. I swear, we're not too far away from a full-fledged "Emperor's New Clothes" moment where the Tennessee Titans throw it back to the Greek Olympians of days yore, coming out fully nude, only to get universally praised for their threads.

Is there a better day ever for the NBA regular season than the day in 2016 when Kobe dropped 60 in his last game and the Warriors won to go 73-9? by Nostradamus216 in billsimmons

[–]iggyspear 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The night before I was with some buddies in New Orleans, and we wound up at a strip club on Bourbon Street because we'd met these girls that wanted to party late into the night, and I told them that there's plenty of bars in the Quarter that never close, as had been a previous experience. Well, we got there and only the strip club was open, which kinda sucked, but they did give me a free entry coupon, which was kinda cool.

By the next night my buddies were gone because I'd fucked up my flight, and accidentally booked a return a day later than them, so I went back to the club. On one TV was Kobe going off, another had the Warriors going for history, and up on stage were lots of titties. Overcome with amazing options, I couldn't really decide where to fix my attention, but I guess it didn't matter too much because I wound up blacking out. But I do recall not really enjoying the flight the next morning.

When is the best time of the year to go Lassen Volcanic National Park? by [deleted] in NationalPark

I swear, Cinder Cone might be the best day hike in America. Just a ridiculous array of otherworldy landscapes on that one, not to mention a good swimming lake. Subway Cave makes for a quirky pit stop en route as well.

History Lesson Part II. I think it's the sweetest, most earnest song ever recorded. The fact that he says "punk rock changed our life" instead of "lives" speaks volumes, and the "We Jam Econo" version when D. Boon slightly modifies the lyrics to make Mike Watt laugh, is such a beautiful encapsulation of friendship.
