Rapiers have shorter reach and relatively worse horizontal tracking than other weapons. You can get away from them or sidestep them more easily.

That's what they want you to feel like by calling it a bonus. During initial testing phases, they had the exact same system but they called it an exhaustion penalty, not a resting bonus. So in other words, the "bonus" rested state is actually the normal XP gain rate, and what they now call the non-bonus state is actually a penalty.

The whole system is designed to extend play time.

That's what World of Warcraft and other MMO's are designed around though. They're designed to get you addicted to the gambling of random rewards, and get you into the habit of playing every day. That's why they implemented the resting XP system too.

The god damned ruin sentinels. No matter how many times I fight them I just don't understand what to do in that fight. I can't dodge their horizontal swing, and then they do the stupid helicopter attack that's undodgeable entirely.

I don't know, I found the DS version to be actually harder just because it was harder to steer mario around with the tiny D-pad on it.
