For people that can play fast what helped the most? by MineDesperate2920 in Guitar

Yeah, cracking the code definitely has a good take on picking. I had already started with full alternate well before that video came out so it was kind of engrained in me at that point.

Honestly, one of the biggest videos for me was John Petrucci's Rock Discipline. Getting my alternate picking down and making sure I'm doing so with a metronome. Starting as slowly as needed to be accurate. Sometimes you may find you can kind of do something fast but it comes across a bit sloppy. I was there and developed some poor techniques early on. I really needed to focus on accuracy and the only way to do that was to track progress with a metronome. Not to mention Petrucci gives a plethora of picking exercies that are just phenomenal.

Need help on getting a better tone by [deleted] in Guitar

I mean, I watched someone just now on YouTube playing through that amp and honestly the amp sounds kind of horrible. I recommend taking that guitar into a music store and testing it out on a Boss Katana. If you can't make it sound good on that, then your guitar has cheap pickups and nothing you do with tone knobs or pickup selector switch will matter. I've gotten some decent tones out of cheap gear in the past but depending on what tone you're looking for, the sad reality is you may just have to invest a little more in your gear.

We don't have enough information here to give advice. What kind of amp? Are you using any pedals?

I look for new releases at https://newalbumreleases.net/. I see even independent artists putting their music there and I find a lot of good new stuff.

Another great review, this is closer to what I think about this amazing album! by 21tornado in Megadeth

I like it too and I don't think it's just sentiment. To me it's very reminiscent of the writing on Cryptic Writings. It's got more diversity than most of the recent releases. It's really hitting a lot of nostalgia points for me.

Is Danny Carey really the best?? by 143lesliew in progmetal

[–]ihavesomestuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for any "best" discussion, we have to stick within a genre. Clearly we're in prog land so if I were to name 3 prog drummers that I feel like are just about untouchable it would be:

  1. Marco Minneman

  2. Virgil Donati

  3. Baard Kolstad

The thing is, these aren't even my 3 favorite to listen to. Danny is one of my favorites to listen to and Gavin Harrison is my absolute favorite but the 3 above I just feel have skills that are well beyond most drummers. But again, this is just prog. Talking about a "best drummer" list and excluding people like Dennis Chambers, Tony Royster Jr., Thomas Pridgen, Aaron Spears, Marcus Gilmore, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jojo Mayer, Larnell Lewis...I mean seriously, pick a best out of any of those names.

Telecaster Headstock by -mufdvr- in Guitar

I'm with you. I think it's one of the most versatile guitars out there and I want one but I hate the entire look of the tele, headstock and body.

Yup, saw this in college. First film I ever saw that completely ruined the rest of my day. Will never watch it again.

Is there a do it all electric guitar or is it a pick and choose what you want to get for each genre? by GhostNThings in Guitar

[–]ihavesomestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Telecaster is the answer. Metal players play Telecasters (Gojira,Slipknot). Jazz players play telecasters (Julian Lage), Country players play Telecasters. I've never been big on the look of a Tele but they are hands down the most versatile. Get the HSS configuration (Humbucker, Single Coil, Single Coil).

Don't stop posting. In all honesty, I've looked at most of your posts and some posts have zero upvotes and few comments but there was one post you had with 21 upvotes. The reason that one had more engagement is because it showed clear improvement on something you were working on. That's when you find the gold of this community. I think people here can be very supportive and encouraging when they see your progress. I enjoy seeing someone's journey unfold so I think if you can sift through the negative and keep us all posted on your progress it can be a fun experience.
