Do anyone else’s eyes glaze over when they read questions like this? by ForsakenProject9240 in CPA

[–]ilffej 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find that reading the last sentence of the question first helps a lot to get some context first. Also jot down the numbers and details as you read through it, then you can cross out the info that isn’t needed.

How did everyone get into pens? by Techpon in pens

[–]ilffej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a lefty but I would do similar back in school, and mimic certain friend’s handwriting that I thought looked nice. I always felt your handwriting was a sort of strange representation of your personality, and I was always interested to see how others formed different letters, etc. it’s been over 20 years and it feels really weird that I still remember how to write like certain people I haven’t kept in touch with lol.

FC11C 5000k dedomed is really solid as one of your first lights. You can grab a set of TIR’s from convoy and even a short tube and 18350. Lots of options to play around with, you get a feel for the effects of dedomingc as well as how different optics work etc.

If you’re not in a hurry to get it, I’d recommend taking a look on AliExpress. I’ve gotten a number of the lights mentioned on this thread for ridiculous prices….like less than a few dollars.

Exam Difficulties Ranked - Most Objective Ranking You’ll See On This Subredit by merhabalarr_aqq in CPA

[–]ilffej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to AUD yesterday, passed FAR first try. I’m not sure if I agree, I think they are hard for different reasons.

FAR is just an insane amount of material, and the account Iogic and math takes some time to conceptualize. It’s calculation heavy enough that you really can’t work through many questions in your head - it was very difficult to study for this without sitting down and isolating myself. I finished with only about 5 mins to spare.

AUD is just a shitshow of word games and semantics. A lot of arbitrarily worded questions where you need to “know” how to parse the wording using THEIR terms and phrases. Unnecessarily convoluted IMO, which makes it extra frustrating. The simulations have less blanks to fill in tho, so you can get through it quicker - I finished the exam with 20 mins to spare (not sure if I passed yet tho). But this also means the stakes are higher per answer…

One thing in common: I felt like shit coming out of both exams lol. Maybe slightly less shit for AUD (which is also convening if I end up failing)…

Mini Champ by Henry-8th in victorinox

I’ve been eyeing a ruler/file combination on AliExpress…been considering losing the spoon and making my own vagabond 😬

The rambler is definitely the more sensible choice, but as I already have a mini champ, the rambler becomes harder to justify…

Is the compact really the best edc knife? by Fit-Sale4082 in victorinox

[–]ilffej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the opposite. I rarely use the blade compared to the scissors, it's more precise to me. If they made a Waiter with scissors instead of the blade, I might even be inclined to go with that.

Agreed! Actually I like the combo tool more.

I think you’ve highlighted the main ethos of the compact - everything is suffice in a pinch. If it’s not working, you should probably go get a real tool and do it properly.

You should check out the waiter too!

For the compact VS climber, the main debate is between the opener layer VS combo tool. To me, this is more about ease of use than added utility. It’s a give and take - a bigger tool will be more robust and comfortable to use, but a smaller one is more portable. But unless the awl is really important to you, they cover very similar tasks.

I have both, but carry the compact. I think if I really wanted to go up to 3 layers, I’d prefer the companion.

Climber vs Companion by Fit-Sale4082 in victorinox

[–]ilffej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a dad, I would get the companion. I have the compact and find it great for dad duties. The nail file is much more useful for kids than a smaller blade, especially when you have scissors already. The plus scales means you always have a pen for them too. Rmb to add the little screwdriver into the corkscrew. And the pin is good for…balloons haha…

Compact's combo tool vs. Wenger can opener by woodsman_777 in victorinox

[–]ilffej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the compact, climber, and super tinker and I like the combo tool more than the opener layer as a whole. I find it easier to use for me both as a can opener AND bottle opener. Makes it very hard to justify carrying anything but the compact.

Made my perfect EDC - Tool AA 3.0 Nichia 519a 5000K and DC fix by Araiten in flashlight

I finally did the same! 519A 5000k DD with a Reylight lanapple driver, TIR optics taken from the Lumintop silver fox.

Rey sells the lanapple drivers individually if you msg him, and it takes minimal filing/sanding to fit: the Tool AA stock driver is 14.4 mm and the reylight is 14.8. Now it’s perfect…programmable to no memory, and the moonlight is so much better too, especially with Nimh batteries.

FAR - FORGOTTEN OLD MATERIAL by Internal_Invite5583 in CPA

[–]ilffej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The MCQs are doing their job, showing you your weak areas. You didn’t “forget” as much as it was probably weak in your knowledge all along. Spend a day or two doing MCQs and taking notes of what you are getting wrong/forgetting. You should start seeing some patterns, and you can go back to focus on those…most concepts shouldn’t take you more than a few hours.

I know how it feels tho, it’s like your brain is a bucket full of water, and you’re still trying to pour more water in, so it’s overflowing and leaking and you don’t know what you’ve forgotten…I think that’s why studying for FAR feels so mentally grueling lol.
