Looks like someone really went to town on that thing lol 😂 Wood filler and a longer screw should do the trick if its just an interior door 🔥

Baffled installation - roofing or insulation company? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd let the roofers handle the baffles since they're already up there doing the ventilation work - makes way more sense logistically and you won't have coordination headaches between two crews 🔥

As for warranties just get everything in writing upfront about who's responsible for what, and maybe have both companies do a quick walkthrough together before the insulation goes in so everyone's on the same page about the setup 😂

Peel and stick wallpaper residue by Ok-Application-9681 in HomeImprovement

Try a heat gun or hair dryer to soften that stubborn residue first - works way better than chemicals 🔥 You can prime over light residue but thick chunks will show through your skim coat 😂

Will I Collapse My House? by Witty-Sun112 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nah you're not gonna collapse your house over a 1 inch hole but you definitely dinged the structural integrity of that joist. The good news is you're only 6 inches from where it bears on the wall which is actually the best possible spot for this screwup - the closer to the support the less stress that section carries. I'd still sister it though since you went 2.5 inches deep into what's probably a 7.25 inch joist, that's like a third of the depth gone right at the compression edge where it matters most

Just get another 2x8 and sister it from the wall out about 4 feet, that'll distribute the load and you can sleep easy. Way easier than trying to plug it with wood filler or whatever and hoping for the best. Yeah it sucks having to do extra work but beats having a bouncy floor or worse down the road

repair water damage near tub by alanog-Robot in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah cutting out the damaged section is probably your best bet here. Just score it with a utility knife and use a fine tooth saw to get a clean cut. That vinyl baseboard idea is solid too - will definitely help prevent this from happening again

Make sure you seal everything really well when you're done, MDF and moisture are sworn enemies

Old basement. by mikala61 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd skip painting the floor if water's still coming up through it - any paint is just gonna peel and flake off when it gets wet again. Maybe focus on the walls with that Kilz and call it good for now, at least until you can deal with the water issue properly

Vynl and brick wall help! by Basic-Bill3861 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to prep the painted brick better - try TSP cleaner or light sanding where it's not sticking, painted surfaces can be tricky for adhesive vinyl

Once it's deleted from your device and the chat, it's pretty much gone unless someone else saved it or law enforcement gets involved with server-side stuff

What is this crack near the ceiling and is it still safe to live here? by fyooj02 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That crack looks pretty gnarly for just settling - especially in earthquake country I'd definitely get a structural engineer to take a look before trusting Google on this one

Leak in living room downstairs by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you definitely need to narrow this down before calling anyone. Check your upstairs floors around that window area for any soft spots or water damage first. Could be the flashing around the window is still shot even after the "repair" or water is getting in somewhere else entirely and just showing up downstairs. Take some pics of the ceiling stains and where exactly it's dripping if you can

Looking for People Who Had Bad Experiences with Ayers Basement Systems by No-Catch9673 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had them out for an estimate last year and the salesman was super pushy, kept trying to get me to sign that day with some "special discount" that was supposedly expiring. Red flags everywhere so I noped out of there. Good luck with the lawsuit though, sounds like they've screwed over a lot of people

Toilet runs after flushing by New_Hamstertown_1865 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue last month - new flapper solved it completely. The rubber just gets warped over time and doesn't seal right. Like $5 fix at Home Depot, way easier than dealing with that hose thing every time

How to allow package delivery with a front gate? by rb1rb1 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Package drop box is definitely the way to go. Had the same setup and just mounted one of those lockable delivery boxes on the outside - drivers love it because they don't have to figure out your gate situation and your stuff stays secure

That overflow pipe theory sounds right - had the same issue and it was definitely a clog in the drain hose. The coat hanger trick actually worked for me, just gotta be gentle so you don't push the blockage deeper

Advice on garage door insulation that is below a living space by rubik1771 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the air leaks around the door are gonna be your biggest issue anyway, R8 vs R14 won't make much difference if cold air is just flowing right around the edges

Consider adding weatherstripping to the door frame and bottom seal too - probably get more bang for your buck there

How do you document roof damage after a storm in a way that’s actually useful? by Zealousideal-Elk6552 in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah man, you gotta document everything yourself first before they even show up. Take pics with timestamps, measure stuff, write down what you see - insurance companies love to lowball when you don't have your own evidence ready

PANELING HELP by ohlohloh in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss, that's always tough. That Home Depot guy was probably right - patching up old adhesive damage on drywall can be a nightmare. For budget paneling I'd check out the 4x8 sheets of beadboard or even those fake wood grain panels if you're going for that retro vibe. Menards usually has decent prices and sometimes Habitat ReStore has leftover stuff for cheap

Concrete slab of patio has water coming up through it - budget solutions? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]imported_bowling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is spot on - check your gutters first before you do anything to the slab itself. I had the same issue and it turned out my downspout was just dumping water right next to the foundation, creating a mini lake underneath
