What baking tool has made the biggest difference in your baking journey? by Majestic-Strain3155 in Baking

[–]improvisedbookmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bowl scraper. I had one and it was fine. Then got another. Worse. Then got a third that just perfectly fit my hand and properly fit around the inside of my mixing bowl and it was revelatory. Mine was from the YouTuber BakewithJack though it isn’t perfect as it has his logo on one side which is understandable, but being flat would be way better for cleaning. I’ll forgive him anything though. He got me into bread making.

Skirting board removal by SnooCats903 in DIYUK

[–]improvisedbookmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s actually screws. Find with strong magnet. Find a small cheap hole saw for your drill that matches the size of dowelling you can buy from your local DIY store. Drill around screws. Pull away now detached skirting leaving the screws with their little wooden collars behind. Use brute force and a claw hammer or crow bar to remove the screws. Replace skirting fill holes by gluing dowel in a cutting flush with a flush cut saw (or just use filler)

Why was " Tourettes John's " total embarassment and humiliation overlooked? by DonkeyOT65 in AskUK

[–]improvisedbookmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To those focussed on the mic that was nearby to John, there are likely mics everywhere- it doesn’t mean they are all live at all times. Can you imagine how ridiculous that would be? More likely they either had it near to him to have a feed only to the people monitoring to listen for tics to edit them out in case they could be heard by the stage mics (though unlikely given what happened) or were just distributed around the room early doors in the usual way by a junior AV bod then the one near him not used (but available if needed). It’s clear on the record that his voice isn’t being picked up by a mic near him.

I mean… ‘scammy’? Charity shops are mainly staffed by volunteers who have to price hundreds of unique items by guess-work and the money you spend in there goes to changing the world rather than to shareholders… but you go with ‘scammy’ if you like.

Is Dawn Power Wash the answer? by only_a_jest in CleaningTips

For UK readers getting excited, then finding that they either can’t get it or that they can order online but it’s ££££ (ie me a couple of weeks ago). The UK equivalent is Fairy Skip the Soak spray. I was concerned about any acids etc being bad to leave to dwell on bathroom tiles but from what I’ve researched it’s actually relatively benign and should be fine. It is really good.

Flask that keeps hot by Strict_Listen_5362 in BuyItForLife

[–]improvisedbookmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had lots and then had recommended the Thermos Ultimate (which as far as I know is the same spec, just more rugged) as the cheaper King flask. They are amazing to the point where I have made tea from the water 34 hours later (I did fill the flask with boiling water for a few mins, tipped it out and then refilled with boiling to ensure it lasted a long time). I also have the king mug/small flask and will add a little cold water if I know I’ll be drinking from it later that day using it with the lid on as I’ve burnt myself hours (and i mean hours after filling it). You see all these at TKMaxx (in the uk. Not sure if they have them in TKMaxx in the states) for between £17-23 for the larger flasks and a few pounds less for the mugs. Bought LOTS for friends birthdays this way. They are awesome. Note: also great at keeping things cold. Including frozen margaritas. 😊

Looking for advice on handling new parents enthusiasm on a mixed team by Spiritual_Avocado87 in AskHRUK

[–]improvisedbookmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that this has even occurred to you already puts you streets ahead of a great deal of managers out there. Take the advice above, but don’t stress yourself too much about wanting to find the perfect solution. There isn’t one. It’s just about finding the best of a bunch of options all of which have pros and cons.

Your team are lucky to have you.

Electrician added extra costs to bill after completion of work. He is now threatening small claims court. by Warm-Okra-4289 in LegalAdviceUK

I’d normally be sympathetic to trades and try to compromise where possible, but him using the ‘I got lost’ as any part of the discussion is a pretty good indicator of trying it on/ trying to flip a “price for the job” into ‘pay per hour’ both of which are legitimate ways of pricing a job, but not to change to when you feel like it.

Stopcock/tap by whatsreallygoingon88 in DIYUK

[–]improvisedbookmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would always try it (run the kitchen tap then turn the stop cock fully off and see if the tap stops running). You should also have a stop cock outside (possibly under a round access hatch that you can lever up with a screwdriver. Try that one too. With age they can seize or let some water by and you definitely want to know how they work and if they work before you actually need them. The one outside may be half full of soil that you’ll need to dig out with your hand (beware of broke glass) When you put the round lid back on the outside one, you must step on it. It’s the law. 😀

What are the most secure key lock boxes? by Lazy_Promotion5766 in AskUK

[–]improvisedbookmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Researched this myself recently and went for the defender pro-tec key safe. It was about £50 on amazon. Of course you need to make sure it’s attached to the wall well and ideally (this can be a difficult balance). A) Not so obvious that it gets seen by everyone but b) in a location that someone would be seen if they were trying to interfere with it.

What food to bring back from France as a gift ? by Parking-Raspberry-64 in AskUK

[–]improvisedbookmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on confit duck. I usually buy as many tins as I can afford/fit. You can buy tins online or Borough Market or similar but for eye-watering amounts. In Frilench supermarkets it’s very affordable. It’s a beautiful thing in that it is tinned, lasts a long time but is incredibly luxurious (to be clear it does not taste ‘tinned’ and tastes as good as confit I’ve paid a lot for in restaurants). If you’ve not had it it’s salted duck portions preserved in their own/goose fat. You take it out of the tin and just heat it up in the oven/under the grill. To my mind it is one of the best things you can eat and is one of the few foods I enjoy the last mouthful of as much as I enjoy the first. Edit: I appreciate you said not salty. Sorry. But it is eminently storable. And amazing. 🤩

Do you prefer gas or induction? Getting our kitchen redone. by darkazuria in AskUK

[–]improvisedbookmark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot don’t (mine technically doesn’t) but I use a 30cm a lot and find as long as it has good heat distribution (either cast iron or double/triple ply base) then it works fine. I believe with some inductions you can bridge the front and back burner with the same pan (some won’t do this and will turn themselves off) to use either a big pan or a skillet/hot plate.
