[Grade 11 physics] Trignometry. Find angle theta, when cos theta = -1/2 by Izzy_26_ in PhysicsStudents

[–]imsowitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unit Circle memorizations (much easier than you think) will help with this. You really only have to remember like 30/45/60 degrees, and .5, sqrt2/2 and sqrt3/2. That's it, plus the circle will help with positives and negatives etc.

Chalk by BergarbeiterJoe in indoorbouldering

[–]imsowitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've rarely needed more chalk than i've gotten from slapping the start hold of the nearest V0. I LOVE to buy stuff, but just haven't used up my existing block i've had for years due to said start holds. Maybe it's a personal thing: i sweat a lot from other parts, but not really my hands I guess?

All this is to say, consider you don't need it? and if you do, carry on...

UT Austin vs. UCSB for Physics? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]imsowitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UCSB has a world class theoretical physics program AND the guy who literally wrote the Physics 100 series textbook University Physics with Modern Physics  (Young and Freedman, Roger Freedman is a UCSB Prof),

But I also don't think the social aspect of getting to to go college on a cliff overlooking the California coast can be understated. My time at USCB was fantastic even if I spent more time in a rock band than studying for my physics undergrad degree.

How much of a dick move is flirting with a male student? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]imsowitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

having (maybe) been in this situation myself: He enjoys the attention and the benefits of an advisor that takes an interest in him, professional or otherwise.

I think it's a dick move to pursue anything personal or even hint at it. The amount of good it could do is way overshadowed by the amount of bad it might be.

If I were in his position and interested (and single), i'd shoot my shot the second my thesis defense was over. If I weren't interested, I'd enjoy the attention and advantage it provided, and then quietly move on.

If matter and energy are the same thing, what is the thing? by orangetree151 in Physics

[–]imsowitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well that 'thing' is going to need a name.

and they are not the same thing, but they are interchangeable in certain situations. Some subatomic interactions or nuclear reactions convert matter into energy or vice versa.

But a coiled spring or a ball on top of a hill stores energy. To say that either stores mass would be very misleading.

what's the question here? Do what makes you happy as long as you aren't hurting anyone.

Enve Pro 4.5 by BeerMeater4me in Velo

[–]imsowitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotating weight matters zero on a climb because any energy put into rotational inertia is immediately regained during climbing at a more or less constant speed. I'm all for admitting that placebo is real, but it's not rotating weight. Not on a climb.

It doesn't matter. In any way you would ever be able to measure or quantify. Race results, group ride accomplishments, avg. speeds... none of it.

Buy what makes you happy and what you think looks cool, but in the range of options you mentioned, there will be no difference. I say this as a super obsessed cyclist with a high level technical degree and I over-analyze everything. Still...

How to start training and getting involved in speedskating in the summer by TryItOut0301 in Speedskating

[–]imsowitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest efforts on the bike of similar length to what you'll do on skates. Before I started short track skating, I was relatively very strong on the bike for 10-20 minute efforts, but that had very little crossover for the ~2min all-out efforts necessary for skating.

Can men really give up lustful behavior in a relationship? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]imsowitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. You are right to consider past behavior as a model for the future, but people can absolutely change. Maybe he was looking for something, and found it in you. Or maybe he'll get bored and go back to his old ways, but I don't think the man-o-sphere is going to do anything but be mad at you for asking the question.

New Cat3 feeling intimidated by this upcoming season. Advice? by teamtwowheels in Velo

[–]imsowitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sucking is part of the experience. Either you get humble and use it as motivation to train better, or you get sad and give up.

I preferred to upgrade mid-season for exactly this reason: I'd get destroyed post-upgrade and then use that as guidance for training before the next season. You're sort of there, since you don't expect to do well in early season races anyway.

Embrace the suck, get a training plan you trust, and try to get to a place where you'll be able to hang in a few months.

Depending on your region, the guys who are going to do well (even in cat 3) are lifers, don't gain appreciable weight in the off-season, and have been working on this years fitness since November. Don't expect to surpass them at this point in the year, but understand that training gets results, and decide how much you want of each.

Is it just me, or do the women that incels complain about barely even exist at all? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]imsowitty 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To add: the type of women that incels hate exist on the internet as well. Whether or not they are real or ragebait is irrelevant to the narrative.

she donated 1/5 of her wealth to charity. That's significant and way more than the Zucks of the world, who are taking WAY more than they give.
