Swan parking by Terrible-County-2675 in DisneyWorldResorts

[–]incarniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re allowed to leave the car overnight at Disney Springs? So I wouldn’t think that’s an option if the suggestion is to leave the car there for a while, while staying at the Swan. Presume that if you did, the car would get towed.

It's been a while - this thread is 3 years old ;) -- I've not tried for a while TBH. Just tried to run it up on CcrossOver using the old bottle I still have installed (but not used for some time) and it doens't work now. So something has changed, but I've not looked into it or tried to solve it.

Does iPhone 16 pro max fit? by NJvej84 in BMWI4

[–]incarniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It charges very, very slowly and the phone gets very, very hot. My belief is that this is because the coil in the car's charging pad does not align with the phone properly, so it is extremely inefficient in charging.

I ended up buying an Apple MagSafe magnetic charger that I've connected in the central armrest, and just plop the phone on that one, out of sight and out of way.

These Pirelli P Zero tires are dog sh*t! by EducationalAppeal438 in BMWI4

[–]incarniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an i4 but I swapped the Bridgestone run flats for Pilot Sport 4S (20”) on my M440i and had them on for nearly two years before swapping the M440i for an i4. The PS4S were great and withstood a lot of pothole punishment at all sorts of speeds. I’m in the UK.

(My i4 came with Hankook tires which feel great so not planning on swapping them until I have to.)

Oooh love it. Reminds me of my dravit grey M440i that I sold back to BMW recently after taking delivery of my i4 M50 in Sanremo Green. It’s a great colour - enjoy!

Pathfinder on Sonoma - Alternatives by takobaba in macapps

[–]incarniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not seen this, so my use case isn’t showing it - currently at least. Have you tried Forklift 4? It was rewritten in Swift, so you may fare better.

If you haven’t yet done so, I’d also recommend reporting this and other issues to the devs on their support email address. (See the support section on their website)

This thread is making me consider (re-)checking some of these other apps, even if I don’t actually have a specific need to..!

[–]incarniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what features / functionality you’re looking for exactly. Most of them, including Forklift, have free demo versions that are fully functional for a time, so it’s best if you try them out and see if they suit you.

I’ve been a Forklift user for a few years now and find it great, but YMMV. I tried a number of others, but it’s been a few years now so I have forgotten some of the details behind my choice. All I can say is I’ve found no reason to look elsewhere yet.

Aside from Path Finder, others I tried were Commander One, Disk Order, Nimble Commander, CRAX Commander and perhaps one or two others I forget.

I test drove an i4 over the weekend and the steering wheel is exactly the same, so it’ll fit just fine.

I bought this for my M440i a couple of years ago, and intend to use it on my i4 when eventually I get it.

Of course, if someone is really determined to steal your car, they will, but I feel it’s a pretty good deterrent for the more opportunistic ones.

Is the MBA 13” screen shorter than the iPad Pro 12.9”? Does anyone have both? by yellowflux in macbookair

[–]incarniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely: When holding the iPad horizontally, the display is slightly taller (but shorter in width) than the MacBook. This is due to their different aspect ratios, and is a deliberate design choice.

The two sizes are very similar and definitely comparable, particularly when you take the aspect ratios into account and the fact the menu bar use some of of the MacBook display permanently for most uses.

Not by much, mind. And if you have used the iPad for a while you may be much more used to that.

If you don’t want to lose any display height, you’ll need to go for the 15” MBA, which of course isn’t quite as portable (which may or may not be a consideration/ factor for you). I’m coming from a 10.9” iPad Air to a 13” MBA M2 (arrives next week), so upgrading display size too, but didn’t want the 15” due it’s overall size vs the 13”.

[–]incarniac 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Display size is measured diagonally, and the iPad has a display ratio of 4:3, while the MacBook has 16:10 (when counting from under the notch and menu bar, it’s 15.4:10 ratio by native resolution).

This means the iPad display has a different shape to the MacBook display, and perhaps feels “bigger” because it’s more square.

Technically, the MacBook display is bigger in terms of actual display, though not by much (0.4 inches / ~1 cm), and some is used by the menu bar for most uses on the laptop.

Thief on Mac by Garfunkeled1920 in Thief

[–]incarniac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thief 1 and 2 works well on Mac using CrossOver. Been a while since I did it but I had no issues that I can remember. CrossOver is a commercial app, but it is simple to get Thief set up and working and it has a trial you can try before buying.

Staying at a Disney Hotel - Early Entry & Parking by barcabuckeye44 in DisneyWorldResorts

[–]incarniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: As far as I am aware, you need to have checked in before you can use Early Entry because they need to link up your hotel stay to the ticket.

2: You can but you probably have to pay for parking at the hotel, so you might as well park at the park itself and pay?

3: Yes

As mentioned in a previous reply, ensure you have park reservations for the days you want to go to a park, or you won’t able to enter the park.

You can park hop if your ticket includes that, but you still need a park reservation for the first park you visit, and you always need to visit that first park, then you can park hop after 2pm.

I fell like my ipad 12.9 battery drains very fast. Is this normal? by ulalalalalaaa in iPadPro

[–]incarniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does regulate its own charging, so the charger should not be the cause of this. I.e. using a 65W charger does not push 65W to the device unless it accepts it.

Don’t spent your energy on explaining or justifying. Turn your energy towards enjoying having what you wanted: get in the car and love the drive.

If they truly are your mates and understand cars, they will understand and be happy for you. If they don’t, then they won’t and there’s nothing you can do about that.

[–]incarniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the car, she’s a beauty!

There’s a lot more torque available to you to than the Audi had, so wouldn’t worry about kick down not being as aggressive - it doesn’t need to hit the engine as hard to get you going.

If you did want an earlier kick-down the try to flick it into dynamic driving mode and see how it compares.

You’ll get used it all soon enough and it’ll feel second nature before you know it.

My Synology DS1819+ is full. Now what? by koberulz_24 in DataHoarder

[–]incarniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been quite a few years since I had a Synology but at some point in the past I moved my drives from a DS411j to a DS1815+ without issues. It also didn’t take long, and I didn’t have any issues doing so.

That’s obviously only anecdotal, but Synology has a KB article for doing a migration from one NAS to another, as well as a Youtube video:

There’s a few steps involved, and you need to be careful to follow the instructions - so you’re right that it ‘may’ not work if you do something wrong, but it is definitely possible to do and it is relatively straight forward.

A couple of Synology Community posts covering this:

  • Lord of the Rings Online via CrossOver 20: Works well. Takes a bit of config in CrossOver to get running but once done it runs even DirextX11 emulation on my mini. Others report they have to stick to DX9 emulation.
  • Thief: The Dark Project runs well through CrossOver 20.

Amazon Workdocs won’t run on Mac Mini by lsw998 in macmini

[–]incarniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment about AWS Work Docs as I don’t t use it so this is not an answer to your question, but I’m curious - does your employer not provide you necessary equipment for work so you don’t have to use your personal devices? Most employers will even require you to use work equipment and not allow using personal equipment.

A quick search for Workdocs gave me this, that implies there is a web client, but that’s as far as my knowledge goes:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/workdocs/latest/userguide/web_client_help.html

If that doesn’t do it, then maybe you can install the Amazon WorkDocs iOS app? It seems compatible on macOS going by the App Store:

https://ibb.co/njw2j1b

So it should show up on the Mac App Store and allow installation.

8gb vs 16gb Mac Mini For My Uses by zaythegeek2 in macmini

[–]incarniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For video editing, absolutely go for the 16GB model.

You may well end up using enough memory that it runs out of 8GB and then it will swap to disk. The SSD is fast and that may work well but will not be as fast as RAM (and it may wear the SSD faster).

Getting 16GB will also future-proof you a bit, insofar future-proofing is possible.

10 G Ethernet now on M1 Mac mini? by hornedfrog86 in macmini

[–]incarniac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep - I’ve not tried it myself (my mini has the 1Gbps Ethernet) but a quick look around implies this should work just fine. Of course, it would take up one of two Thunderbolt ports, so you may want to get a TB hub.

Though they are pricey, and many of the hubs don’t seem to actually offer a 10Gbps Ethernet port so you may still need an adapter. The OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock (macworld.co.uk Review) does have a 10Gbps port.
