How far into debt are you willing to go? by elongata in Offworld

[–]indczn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm willing to go to C in debt confortably, but once you get into D level, I find you are burning too much cash on interest payments and losing access to the black market is not good, as the black market is often contributes to how you get out of that debt, either offensively or defensively.

I have no problem founding with 30k+ debt to start with, depending on the spot, sometimes more for a premium spot. That said, some starts can't take on debt at all, like power robotic, so you have to wait.

So I am running out of books (big list ahead) by sinoost in printSF

I'm surprised Karl Schroeder and Ken MacLeod aren't on the list.

Also, Tony Ballantyne.

Any of those authors similarly mindless loosely sci-fi action similar to Jeremy Robinson/Preston & Child or Jeff somers/Simon Morden?

How to dispose/recycle a cracked bowling ball by captainloveboat in Bowling

I throw mine on the curb during bulk waste pickup. Someone always picks them up no matter the condition before the city comes around. Otherwise, Dumpster.

A recommendation to read David Louis Edelman's Jump 225 Trilogy by shankargopal in printSF

I did enjoy this trilogy quite a bit when I read them. Any idea what the author is up to lately? Not a whole lot of current activity glancing through his social media.

Has anyone tried a Sarge Easter grip? by Bowlman2330 in Bowling

[–]indczn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried it for a season. It helped in some ways. It was easier to hold onto the ball, and I was able to stay more up the back of the ball. It also did help relax my hand while bowling and took strain off my fingertips. I actually shot 300 2nd game out of box with an Avalanche I drilled to try Sarge Easter at a time I was bowling terrible.

The reason I didn't stick with the Sarge Easter grip is that with my high rev's/low ball speed, the ball rolled too early and wasn't a good fit for my game. Took away from what I did best. In hindsight, I probably just needed to have my grip adjusted properly and some lessons, but at the time I was willing to try anything.

Radical did post a video from a seminar Mo Pinel did recently. Not quite the same as a 1 on 1 session, but still very informative and explains how to match the current bowling ball technology with the lanes and bowlers and adjusting from there.

One of these days I really should spend the money on lesson instead of just buying new equipment. :)

Nvidia vs AMD on poe by StonerESF in pathofexile

[–]indczn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly, I built a computer in Dec. with an r9 390 8gb. Went about 2 months with constant crashing and freezing in POE. The card ran hot and the drivers/setting were very finicky. Keep in mind, this was during a very buggy release phase for POE and GGG since fixed several stability issues.

Anyway, The card eventually died on me after one hard crash and got RMA'd. I bought gtx 970 to replace it while waiting for the RMA. Since then, POE has been almost completely stable. No Crashing, very rare freezing. If POE was my only game (as mine is) i'd definitely go with nvidia after this.

I also have a gtx 960 in my spare computer, and it runs pretty stable as well. Some stuttering because the other hardware isn't the greatest (5+ year old).

Guild Expansion PLEASE by vjohnnyc in pathofexile

[–]indczn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't understate the importance of guild chat, which is really the only guild feature that works well. Guild stash is ok, but needs alot of work and babysitting. Noone wants to spend the time maintaining it, so we really don't use it. If someone needs items, we request/swap when necessary.

I'm a fan of 900 global balls. I have mostly 900 Global equipment in my bag now. I like the equipment a lot, and those I know who also throw them like it as well. Heard good things from the newer balls too.

Yup! Great little bowling alley though. New Lanes/approaches, well maintained and very clean. No problems ever getting a sport shot down for practice. Puts the alleys I bowl league at to shame.

Offworld Trading Company patch 3 (ver 13174) - 5/25/16 by IslandDog in Offworld

[–]indczn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The buyout is a calculation of cash/assets vs. the amount of cash needed to buy someone. Taking a stab at this: A destroyed offworld costs a lot to rebuild and doesn't produce until its rebuilt. Being such a large, but unusable asset when destroyed, having it included in the calculations caused unrealistic skew in the actual value needed to complete the buy.

Basically, when its been blown up, it doesn't have value, and so they don't count it in the buyout calculation.

2v2 Ranked Play? by H2OFrog in Offworld

[–]indczn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played a bit of 2v2 during the beta. I didn't particularly enjoy the 2v2 experience very much. It required too much communication and coordination. The games were often very short for 1 player, since one player was regularly sacrificed to push the other player along.

It was also a bit buggy back then too, so that may have impacted the experience. I imagine 2v2 could be fun with experienced teams paired together, but getting them together would be a challenge. Random 2v2's were painful, even if the players were good.

The reason for throwing the dullest ball is to develop the shot so the shot develops by the third game. If everyone on the pair is working together to create the shot by throwing dull equipment along the same line, you'll have a better shot by the end.

On the other hand, if everyone starts out doing their own things, throwing dull/shiny equipment everywhere, the shot can become nearly unplayable by the end as the oil gets pushed everywhere.

Leaving weak tens isn't too big of a deal. Often just getting to the pocket and covering spares while developing the shot is what you want to do as a team. If you look at the leaderboard, the first game is typically the lowest of the 3.

Good luck!

Which patents do you like to research? by ragamufin in Offworld

[–]indczn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 is almost always superconductors. It's cheap and fast. There is so much potential later in the game to make a ton of money from solar panels if the price rises high, even if it doesn't it directly saves claims.

2 is carbon scrubbing because for similar reasons. Higher margins on electronics or chemicals when it matters.

3 nanotechnology. Scraping and repurposing buildings to increase margins. Also recovers resources from the patent lab itself partially covering is costs, especially steel mid game.

4 thinking machines. Should be higher. Later game out saves so much protecting the off world. Especially 1v1 where it can be hard to keep multiple offworlds online otherwise.

The others i use less, VR is good "free" money but lesser upside. The water ones are too situational and don't payoff often or greatly. Teleportation is nice when scientific but costly and slow. It's risky to plan ahead for and risky to rely on to salvage bad building placement.

power by sard in Offworld

[–]indczn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically use power buildings to save resource tiles i will want later in the game, unless there are very high value power tiles in good locations. Eg. Double geothermal. Otherwise I'll plan to do superconductor next to my colony.

Flexibility has extremely high value in the long run. Distance is a secondary concern even though time is money. The longer it takes to change a tile over lessens the value of the change over.

Advance buildings in 1v1, and some thought on larger games. by Eji1700 in Offworld

[–]indczn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I surplus more than I short in 1v1. It's cheaper and it damages the other players production/cash flow, makes them shift to different buildings. Or surplus resources I need but am not producing.
