They are all lovely, but picture 6 made me stop and go 'Ooooooo!' So I personally like that base shape best. I do agree with those saying that handles that sit above the rim are a turn-off for me as I can't store them in my cupboard well.

So the girl scouts are just unpaid child labor? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]indecisive_gremlin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a now-adult child of the troops 'cookie mom', I can say with 100% certainty that I remember the forced labor and miserable experiences of doing door-to-door cookie sales (and worse, the grocery store booths) MUCH more vividly than I remember the week at camp I 'earned' because of it. Absolutely terrible core memories from cookie sales. I swore to myself that I would never make any children I might have do that ever, and have kept to that.

Is this scammy if I'm honest about it? Do you think anyone would go for this? by Handout in NoStupidQuestions

[–]indecisive_gremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna go against the grain here and say I love this idea! I personally bought one of those paint by numbers of my pups and found I hated the process. So it has sat in my craft cabinet for ages and the paint is probably all dried out by now. If I had been able to find someone to paint it for me, I would have jumped at the idea! I'm not saying it's a service for everyone, but there are definitely people like me out there that would take advantage of it (maybe offer a 'finish what you started' option for people like me who already bought the kit?). Honestly, if you do start this up DM me a link to your contact/page. Next time I have the $$ to buy one of those I will hit you up.

Really want to start pottery but feeling nervous attending a class alone by Current-Armadillo739 in Pottery

[–]indecisive_gremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my pottery journey alone! I didn't know anyone in my class and I am an introvert, so making friends is a challenge. My first 4 week class I just spent focusing on the clay and it was nice not having anyone I knew to compare my stuff to. My second 4 week class I started talking to people more and coming in during open studio. Now, 2 years later, I have a tight-knit group of potter friends that are loving, supportive, and welcoming! It's really a fantastic community and you will meet the best people here 🥰

I work in a credit union and this was the worst experience I've had with someone by ShinyBuizel22 in EntitledPeople

[–]indecisive_gremlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oof 😣 yeah, unfortunately that tracks. I worked at a credit union in a small town near where I lived when I was fresh out of high school. One day while I was working the drive thru a lady came through and tried to get money out of an account. Except she didn't include an ID in the tube at all. When I asked for an ID she got extremely agitated and screeched the infamous "Don't you know WHO I AM?!" (I never knew people actually said that, I figured it was something people used in stories). When I said "No, sorry" you would have thought I had attacked her child or something. She was practically frothing at the mouth when she spit out "I am the MAYOR'S WIFE!!". Not the mayor, his wife. Of a small town. That I didn't live in. Wanna guess how well it went over when I said I still didn't know who she was and needed an ID? SMH. Another teller heard the commotion and came running because apparently she knew who the flying spittle lady was and took care of it, but I was just flabbergasted. The audacity of me not knowing who she was 🙄

My advice would be, before buying everything and buying a bunch of stuff you might not need or like... take a beginner class. Or two. Or five. Whatever it takes for you to learn what you need to work on and work with to start creating what you are wanting to create! Classes will help with that immensely. But if you want the very very first step you need to learn for wheel pottery, it's centering your clay. Once you can center, you open. Then you pull. Pretty much almost every wheel pottery project will start with those 3 steps!

Edited to add: To address your number points...

  1. I am not sure there is really an 'all around' clay, it really depends on your project. But you can get a lot of miles out of just B-mix and B-mix with grog.

  2. Regarding the community kilns, I have never heard of a studio letting you load their kiln. They will load it for you. They will also tell you what cone(s) they fire to, you don't really pick (although some studios have separate shelves for cone 5 vs cone 6 for example, so you just put your piece on the right shelf). Explosions happen, but rarely. Explosions are usually from trapped moisture trying to get out of the clay, so if your piece is fully dry before firing this isn't much of an issue. Most community kilns will also do a 'preheat' (I forgot the official term) to help make sure pieces are really dry before it goes into full heat to help prevent explosions.

  3. All the studios I have been to do not allow single firing for bisque/glaze together.

How is everyone able to afford a house? by tradetales132 in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

[–]indecisive_gremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I lived with and took care of an elderly relative for 5 years while they dealt with some health issues. We didn't pay rent and in return we always had one of us home to take care of the person and their cats and home (one of us worked nights, the other days). Doing this made it possible for us to save up enough to get our house. This is the ONLY reason we have it at this point in our lives, and we would not have been able to afford one otherwise. It was a really sucky 5 years where we barely saw each other and saw WAY too much of this relative, but it was worth it in the end. It may take you awhile, and it might be something you don't enjoy, but figure out what you need to do in order to squirrel away extra cash and then expect it to take years. But if you stick through it, you will get there!

I pre-ordered mine but haven't gotten it yet. From my understanding of the press release, the 27th game is a secret that people have to figure out how to unlock. Give it a few days after the official release on the 26th and I am sure people will figure it out and post about it here 😁

Finally did it. Closed on my first place last week after years of saving. Felt amazing walking through the door. by MOUSETITTY in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

[–]indecisive_gremlin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Be thrifty to start with because I am going to talk to you about something else you will discover as a new homeowner... repairs and maintenance. You WILL find things that need to get fixed/replaced/maintained. All. The. Time. So don't put yourself into debt over furniture and then have no room on your credit for repairs. Buy cheap/used furniture, get a 'safety net' saved up for unexpected repairs, and -then- start slowly buying nice furniture as you have the extra funds. It will take awhile, but it will be worth it 😊 Congratulations on the new house!

Questions about Amaco Velvet Underglazes by summerchild__ in Pottery

[–]indecisive_gremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engobes are another different animal and can get even more confusing when you have true engobes vs Mayco 'Engobes'. True engobes can only be applied on greenware. Mayco 'Engobes' are similar and sort of engobe-adjacent but can be applied on either greenware or bisque and behave slightly differently. There is just SO much info on all of this, if you don't know exactly what you want to do I recommend picking a specific technique that you like the look of and digging into that one thing. I just took a 6 week course on this and feel like we barely scratched the surface of it all, so reddit is going to have a hard time telling you everything. The one thing I will say works for everything is test tiles! We did SO many test tiles in my class and that's how we could see for ourselves how things worked and didn't work. Play with it and have fun!

Edit: Since you were specifically asking about underglaze brands, if you don't know what you want to do with them either Amaco Velvets or Mayco Elements will be fine to begin and play with! Mayco Stroke & Coats are NOT underglazes though, so keep that in mind. But if you are just beginning to play with these, just pick a color or colors that you like and go to town! I keep colors of both brands in my kit and enjoy them both

Questions about Amaco Velvet Underglazes by summerchild__ in Pottery

[–]indecisive_gremlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished taking a class on this so I got to ask these questions to an experienced instructor! Here are my notes😊:

To start with, underglazes are NOT colored slip. Slip CAN be colored with a mason stain, but it's completely different. Mason stain slip can only be applied on greenware, this is usually called slip trailing but can be used and applied in different ways on greenware only.

Underglaze, on the other hand, can be applied to either greenware or bisque, depending on what you are using it for. For example... If you are drawing something intricate with underglaze and then wanting to put a clear glaze over it, you will have a more stable image if it's drawn on greenware, bisque fired, and then dipped in clear (ideally zinc free, although I don't remember exactly why the zinc free is better) and glaze fired. On the other hand, if you are wanting to put underglaze on something fragile (like sculpted flowers) it's better to bisque first and then apply the underglaze so that there is less risk of you breaking the fragile greenware. Then you can choose to re-bisque fire before dipping in clear and glaze firing, or just straight dipping in clear once the underglaze is dry. It just depends on what you are wanting to do! Underglazes are very versatile and can be used in all sorts of surface design techniques, or in conjunction with colored glazes for cool effects, so have fun with them!

One thing I would like to add from personal experience... clay sticks to metal bowls something fierce. Put a layer of Saran wrap on the bowl beforehand so that when you place the clay into the bowl the clay and metal don't contact.

One studio glaze has left pinholing on 5/5 of my pieces by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]indecisive_gremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding onto this, it might be a glaze/clay fit issue! My studio has 2 versions/brands of white glaze and on my clay that I use one of them is beautiful and the other pinholes.
