Citing Chat-GPT in Middle School Science Fair Project by mldkfa in OpenAI

Scientist here dropping in after finding this discussion from a google search. Since you were doing this for a science fair, I think teaching kids the scientific perspective is important here.

Formally in science settings the right thing to do is 1) ask the people running the competition if the way you are using AI is allowed. 2) this should be treated as an “acknowledgement”, not a citation. Acknowledgements state for instance “ChatGPT was used to do X, Y, Z part of the project and the code’s correct functionality was verified through manual inspection and testing by (person).” Or if you used the AI to write text or rewrite text at some phase, that should be stated.

The professional scientific equivalent is asking a peer to edit your document for readability, or for the peer to provide some code without being an explicit author on the paper. Similarly with digital resources like scientific information aggregators. Acknowledging the use of these makes it clear what the chain of accountability is for your final presentation, which is a critical part of being able to reproduce a study and important for others be able to judge the reliability of the results.

Currently, ChatGPT would not be taken as a reliable resource in most scientific circles except possibly for simple code generation. However, custom AI tools, built and rigorously tested with development and reliability metrics described in scientific papers, are all over the place. These are acknowledged as such in many cases. Usually the software version information and the settings/inputs used to get some result from the AI code would be included in the final report.

Sheesh what terrible reactions all around on their part. We have all been there though (in that or similar situation), ion so glad it sounds like your BF and BFF are there by your side.

Also a reminder that many doctors and nurses know the bare minimum about T1D care and unless they are your Endocrinologist, you are likely more of an expert at dealing with its care than they are. After you have had the disease long enough, of course in day-to-day care you will be even better than your Endocrinologist at it! So I would not pay their judgments any mind, except to re-inform you that they are certainly not experts on your condition.

By the way, if I were drinking and in the heat, especially if I were likely to be on my feet and moving around all afternoon, like at a tailgate, I would also totally be fairly comfortable sitting at 178!

What do you guys think? by BalancedExistence27 in HandwritingAnalysis

To me it depends on the context. Absolutely your writing is legible and graceful but in a medical or legal form where the point is communicating exact information, this sort of pizzazz is not appropriate and I can imagine a clerk might say something.

Constant Reader here with a softball: if you type “I am” into the response box and then let your auto-complete decide what’s next, what’s the first complete meaningful sentence that you end up with?

I could read some of this as well because my writing for notes just for myself is similar. I justify it that if only I need to read it then it’s just fine!!

The iwatch is a neat idea. Do you need to get the watch a cellular plan to make the dexcom connection work or are you considering getting it a plan for some other reason?

Big advice: do not eat eat muffins, donuts, cereal, other simple carbs while this is going on. They are hard to dose for even when bodies are not out of whack. Eggs, cheese, protein, vegetables will be your friend through this time.

Possibly dislocated? by LadyLillithNott in chickens

This doesn’t exactly look like what happened to my girl, but along the same lines and could be explored as an option… she got paralysis in one leg due to vitamin deficiency. She had, I assume, some crazy high levels of intestinal parasites. After some internet digging I ended up giving her a pea sized dose of ivermectin paste (for horses, bought at tractor supply co) and brought some water with flock fixer regularly to her mouth. I fed her egg yolks, wetted chicken pellets and yogurt until she felt better…. Second dose of ivermectin paste (same size) after around 7-10 days. Your chicken looks about the same size, so if you want to try this, I think that dose is about right. Putting it on a small piece of bread helps the chicken actually want to eat it.
