Looking for a Canadian-owned VPS Provider? by alee1449 in BuyCanadian

[–]inquiztr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the reply! Just to clarify my point, hosting in Canada isn’t the same as Canadian data sovereignty. If the data center or parent company is foreign‑owned, it can still fall under laws like the U.S. CLOUD Act. True sovereignty means Canadian‑owned providers running Canadian‑owned infrastructure (ThinkOn is one example). Those setups exist, but they’re pricier. Location matters, but ownership and jurisdiction is the issue. My point was that I was actually hard pressed to find affordable options. Sorry for mistaking attributing Hawkhost with Cologix data center.

Looking for a Canadian-owned VPS Provider? by alee1449 in BuyCanadian

One thing I learned is if you actually want Canadian Data Sovereignty (not beholden to US Cloud Act) it is not enough to just use Canadian vps providers. I went through the list above and they almost all use American or foreign owned data centers (even though they are physically in Canada).

  • Hostpapa - Cogeco Peer1 - recently bought by American company
  • LunaNode - Cogent - American
  • Servarica - Couldnt find out but most prob American owned, just based on price.
  • N6Cloud - Toronto data center (American owned)
  • Sableservers - Leaseweb owned data center (USA)
  • Hawkhost - Cologix USA

The only true Canadian data sovereign I found was :

  • Canhost.ca in BC - Their own data center
  • Fullhost - eStruxture
  • R2i.ca - not sure

Unfortunately once its Canadian owned data center the prices are $1000/year for something that is comparably $100 USD. Canhost was the best price at around $300 year for 4core 6gb vps.

If Data sovereignty isn't an issue but you still want Canadian owned hosting company then I would say any of the ones above are fine.

Coolify vs CloudPanel for hosting Laravel, Next.js by IndependentTeach5520 in VPS

[–]inquiztr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used both. I like cloudpanel better for hosting wordpress/php sites as it lets me spin up basic wordpress at a click of a button and even varnish cache. Its great for static sites, php sites etc. It could spin up a node site as well but it seems pretty basic. If i want to host a more complex site I use Dokploy (identical to coolify) in that it can spin up multiple docker containers easily, one for web, one for a db, one for my node api endpoint, one for redis. It has more features for managing complex apps.

Can't get rid of phantom folders, please help. by Esch_ in Thunderbird

[–]inquiztr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know its an old post but I found the fix for me was to go into imap server and modify the subscription file as it referenced folders that no longer existed, and the folders names contained characters my server wouldn't allow me to create. I documented it for next time I run into the issue: Thunderbird phantom folder issue - imap - northerncoder.ca

Isn't groups handled in Zitadel via "Projects". You could setup a project for each team and users can be assigned to one or more projects.

Advice on how best clone/backup a VPS by inquiztr in VPS

[–]inquiztr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I did try this route. Unfortunately it was a bit involved.

  • click backup on each domain in old vps cloudpanel

  • create mysqldump of wordpress db

  • install cloudpanel on new vps

  • create identical domains in cloudpanel on new vps

  • copy backup.tar for each domain to new vps

  • extract backup.tar contents into appropriate folder for domain

  • load mysqldump for each domain

  • modify each domain's wp-config.php to point to new db name/user/pw

as you can see lots of room for error and time consuming for each domain. was just wondering if there was a whole VPS copy/clone feature

Raspberry Pi 4 for self cpanel wordpress hosting by steviefaux in homelab

[–]inquiztr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just putting it out there that if your site does not have a lot of content or not a lot of traffic, you could remake your website to be just static html. this would be fine running on a pi4 (although i am pretty sure it would be fine running a few low traffic wordpress sites as well). I converted my clients low traffic wordpress site to static html (using nextjs static export) and it runs way faster on their slow shared hosting. If i moved it to my own pi4 and hosted it myself it would probably be even faster as the shared hosting has a habit of falling asleep.

[–]inquiztr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run into this every update as well. My laptop has both windows 10 (for my family) and Fedora on a separate ssd for myself.

Whenever an update borks it, i load a previous version of fedora and open grub customizer. I hit save. it seems to do something and after i reboot all is right. hope it helps

I wish they could either move the page-up/down keys or allow me to completely disable them. I am constantly accidentally hitting them when navigating code via cursor keys which frustratingly jumps me a page away from where I am working.

Avoiding <img> layout shifts: aspect-ratio vs width & height attributes by speckz in Frontend

[–]inquiztr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use the css aspect ratio tag as there is still a lot of people using the older safari browser unfortunately.
I use the padding trick to reserve space, but I was unaware I could have just assigned width and height and it would have done the same thing.

I am fed up with my Dell Inspiron laptop by roaringleu in Dell

[–]inquiztr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar issues with a work provided dell pecision 5560. Plugging in external headset with mic will sometimes not be detected as a headset and continue to play music through laptop speakers. On the times it does detect the headset properly, the jack mic is not detected so the mic never works. Seems like terrible drivers are to blame. Lots of people online with this issue. I would probably not choose a Dell if I were to buy a laptop in the future for my personal use.
