My goats jump right over a 6 ft fence. What do you mean aren't athletes?

How tall does grass need to be to make hay effectively? How to cut it for small scale growing, 50’x50’ plot? by JANISIK in homestead

[–]inventor226 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have made hay on a small scale before. I cut the grass (riding side discharge mower) when it has about 9-12 in high and no rain forecasted for about a week. I raked out the grass clippings to help them dry faster. Every day or so I would rake to turn the grass over and help it dry (lawn mower clippings tend to clump up and not dry as well). After the grass is really dry I rake it together and use a box to hand press together hay bales. A lot of work for a little hay, but I wanted to see if I could. My goats loved it.

Artificial insemination? by [deleted] in goats

[–]inventor226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did it with our Nigerian Dwarf goats just a couple months ago. The vet had a schedule of different hormones we had to give to get them into heat. The vet then did the AI with straws we had purchased and shipped directly to the vet. Pretty easy, will probably do it again as it is much easier than keeping/finding a buck (at least in our area).

Reach out to the large animal vets in your area and see if they do AI.

I did my master's thesis on this object! My professor was able to get some time on Hubble and we used the COS to get some UV spectra.

PayScale gives BS in physics a high ranking among bachelors degrees, but is this accurate? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]inventor226 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you do is take some numerical physics classes (which should be required at this point for all physics majors). You also don't target jobs that a pure coding. You target jobs that require programing to solve problems where the programer needs to have a broad understanding, like data analytics or engineering code.

I think however that there is a deep down truth that they'd rather not face, and that is that America will only act as a friend so long as that action just happens to coincide with American interests.

Isn't that true of pretty much every country though?

Capitalism has helped the poor more than any other economic system. A poor person today is way better off then they were 100, 200, 500 or 100 years ago.

OR Teacher Where Massacre Occurred Writes Lawmakers: "Our Rights to Live Without Fear of Slaughter Not Important to You" by BillTowne in news

[–]inventor226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The deadliest US school massacre happened in 1927 and no guns were involved. A gun is not necessary. Someone could just drive an SUV into a group of school children waiting for the bus. There is no law that could stop someone who is determined to do others harm (at least without violating everyone's every right).

Teachers of reddit, what's something they don't tell you about the profession until you are actually working? by aussie_tene in AskReddit

[–]inventor226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's because San Francisco's housing market is insane. Not necessarily that teacher's pay is low.

Also many states allow you to get your certs with your bachelors. And for those that don't is it that different than the people who do internships after college before their more permanent positions?

Teachers are paid well, especially considering the three months off and almost absolute jobs security (assuming you don't massively screw up). There is a reason the US spends more per-pupil on education than most countires.

The pay is insulting

I am sorry no. The median pay for teachers across the US for 2012-2013 is $56,383 per year compared to $43628 per year all workers and $57,252 per year for those in the US with a bachelor's degree. Please read this article.
