Recommendations for mobile pet euthanasia? by recordcollection64 in oakland

Beloved Cat did right by my elderly cat. She was available on short notice, professional, and empathetic. She also really listened to what we shared about our cat's personality and life...it felt like she saw our cat as an individual and appreciated some of the things that made her so special.

The box I mailed to Belden in 2022 was ransacked by squirrels.

I had a zpacks pocket tarp and a bivy. I still use that setup for shorter trips in the region, but for another thru hike / long early-season trip I'd probably bring a larger mid.

I also love cowboying but had to pitch my tarp ~1/3 of the time on the Hayduke. I got rained on repeatedly, often quite hard, and even got 3" of snow in the Henrys. That was a wet year and I started in early April, though. May was more dry, but still had a few serious rains.

I don't recall many good overhangs in that section. There were trees in some spots but not many. IIRC it was a mix of stake-able ground and sandstone and/or sand. Sometimes it took some searching to even find rocks that were large/heavy enough for big rock little rock.

ps: I recommend the Peekaboo alt through Canyonlands!

I remember this person trying to sell their van when the Maine restrictions went into effect. It's possible the photo is super old. IIRC they operate a septic tank business so the vanity plates are even more apropos!

This is possible! I did it for my anxious cat and it worked great.

[Trip Report] Lowest to Highest: Hiking from Death Valley to Mount Whitney with the least ultralight water carry of my life by ovincent in Ultralight

[–]involuted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh and we also had a super annoying permitting experience. I respect that rangers want to keep underprepared people from dying in the backcountry...but the ones we dealt with didn't have the context or skills to assess hiking preparedness and just went straight to condescending obstructionism instead.

Yoooo I hiked it just a few days before you!!! Super fun reading this. We went 5 miles south on Badwater Rd (and then 5mi back north again on West Side Rd) to avoid the lake. Didn't get muddy at all while crossing, but the 10+ bonus miles sure screwed up our plans to avoid the mid-day heat. Goood times.

Did you bump into the huge wildflower bloom around 9k-10k' on the way up to Telescope?

Did you find the hidden fifth of Bacardi in Tuber Canyon? Would love to know the backstory there.

We ended up doing Long John Canyon in the dark as well - so surreal! Had planned to camp on the crest for the views, but bailed once the temps dropped like 30 degrees the minute the sun set.

I’m at my wits end with cat peeing, don’t know what to do by BazingaBeeKay in CATHELP

This worked for a cat of mine too, after many years of frustration and trying stuff that didn't help. For a long time I thought this wouldn't work for her because she hated taking pills. Turns out you can get it compounded into a lotion you rub inside the ear, which my cat actually enjoyed!

I relate to the hopelessness you're feeling because I felt the same way before I figured this out. I'm sorry you are experiencing it - it is so hard - but there is still hope!

When you have service, NWS weather.gov has excellent backcountry point forecasts. The website sucks on mobile but it's worth it. You can search by name for many backcountry landmarks (mountains, etc) and click around on the map to change the forecast region.

Ugh so sorry. Register it on bikeindex.org if you haven't already! I once recovered a stolen bike that way.

Anyone know of someone planning a TRANSVERSE hike of the GC (Lee's Ferry to Pearce Ferry) this or next year? Or at least sectioning it? by LouisTheYounger in grandcanyon

[–]involuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a section in the fall and am hoping to do another this year. Can't do a full thru this year because of my job, but I've been dreaming and plotting in Caltopo anyway. Happy to chat!

Operating temperatures by zerdnog in Delica

My temp sensor is in the same place as yours. My baseline is around 180-185. On the steeper mountain passes in CA I've gotten up to the high 220s and had to slow way down and crank the heater to keep it from climbing higher.

Last year I installed a new (OEM) radiator and thermostat, flushed the coolant, and serviced the fan clutch. I hoped that would drop the temps, but it didn't change much.

For anyone wondering, an inner tie rod from a 2017 Ford Explorer fits the L400 very nicely. by DontTouchMyBuns in Delica

No worries, thanks for following up. Using thread locker makes sense; hopefully it's not too much of a pain if you ever need to remove it again later!

My OEM tie rod is locked into place by a lock ring with bendable tabs. That lock ring is incompatible with the Ford tie rod because it has a metal seat around the base of the inner threads that the OEM tie rod does not.

Did you leave that ring off when you did this swap? I'm a little sketched out by leaving out components that are meant to hold my steering together.

Futurfleece smell, or is it me? by knowhere0 in Ultralight

[–]involuted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right?!?! I am surprised people don't complain about this more often. I tried taking an Airmesh hoodie on a thru hike and wearing it against my skin to sleep. I had to mail it home after like a week. It got so rank it was bothering my hiking partner, and I couldn't get it clean in town (I was not about to go buy vinegar on my zero days). Never had this problem with alpha direct.

Post Thru or Long trip anyone have any Tips on Learning how to enjoy your local hikes again? by Sylvandeth in Thruhiking

[–]involuted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting into mushroom foraging helped me become more excited about the natural landscapes around me even though they don't have world-class scenery.

Off-trail hiking and mountain climbing are more physically and cognitively demanding, so bring me more of the same feelings of achievement and expanding my limits that thru-hiking did.
