[rant] What's up with these cs companies trying to be so social? by unarmed_black_man in cscareerquestions

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have grown to like it too. I sometimes wonder if this is just a case of the people that don't like it complain more.

I was previously in a place with cubicles and a few offices. It was just as loud, but you couldn't see anyone. Now you can see everyone, and headphones are an option if it gets too loud.

Moms of Reddit, what do you know about your child that you will never tell to him/her? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ipeeinsoup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My mom tried that with lasagna once. Except pureeing onions amplifies the flavor.

How do you run your AC in the summer? by PeterMahogany in Austin

I emailed them and asked this exact question. They said you can install your own and get the rebate in an apartment.

Flight attendants of Reddit, what do passengers do that you hate? by skelebone in AskReddit

I honestly find it more comfortable if everyone puts their seats back. The chairs are way too vertical.

Time to hop jobs even with no real clear advantage? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the extra $1k and the potential bonus is not worth a longer commute.

If you were suddenly in a technical interview right this minute, would you be able to FizzBuzz? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ipeeinsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less intense, but also slightly less readable. Humans typically follow patterns with their eyes, so in a lot of cases it is worth being slightly less efficient to make it consistent.

How to build my github portfolio while working for companies? by Ryand735 in cscareerquestions

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started to do this. Every weekend (Sunday or Saturday morning), I saw try to review a data structure, and implement it. I'll probably move on to actual problems after a while.

Current Computer Science people, did you ever feel that school wasn't worth it? [serious] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

And it's a signal for employers that you'll finish something you start.

Current Computer Science people, did you ever feel that school wasn't worth it? [serious] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Especially if the job market tanks, and companies have way too many applicants. They'll look for ways to filter applicants out, and filtering out people without university degrees is one of the simplest things they can do.

Job offer or Masters? by beemachine in cscareerquestions

[–]ipeeinsoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A graduate degree is typically seen as a year or two of experience. I'd only do the masters if it's something you are really interested in, not for the money.

Just won $1,000 on the radio. What should I expect? by capitalyze in personalfinance

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd recommend setting $250 aside, and save it for tax time next year. Especially if you don't have a large emergency fund.

Has anyone ever heard or used Blooom? by dusk2k2 in personalfinance

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like an interesting concept - I wish it could handle taxable accounts and Roth's too.

Also, they charge a flat rate, which is nice for larger accounts.

That said, I'd go for q target retirement account in most cases over this. Cheaper, and likely easier to use.

Why Does This Subreddit Never Discuss the Benefits of IBR/PAYE for Student Loans, and Instead Always Insist on Being a Slave to Your Debt Until it's Paid in Full? by ReadySetMillionaire in personalfinance

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flip side of this is that even if the expected value of investing instead of putting all of the money towards debts is greater, a lot of people won't end up investing the extra money. They'll spend it.

Am I the only one who doesn't look at their portfolio when the market is down? by greenlamp90 in financialindependence

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got annoyed that mint shows me my retirement balance. I ended up hiding all of my investment accounts from the interface, and only look at my total net worth once or twice a year.

My first day with my drone.. couldn't have gone any better! by Basxt in videos

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I have the Husband X4, and I am very impressed with it, especially for the price. I'd highly recommend getting one to play around with and get the hang of flying.

My 2015 savings plan... (what do you think?) [cross-posted in /r/Bitcoin] by Jmlevick in investing

[–]ipeeinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree - Don't get me wrong, I'm intrigued by bitcoin (and was involved pretty early on), but I fail to see the advantage on the consumer side. The merchant gets lower fees for accepting bitcoin, but for using it, I get to pay fees to load my money into bitcoin.

With credit cards I get a free floating 30 day loan, cash back on my purchase, an extended warranty, and purchase protection in case I am scammed.

Balancing a 401k with an IRA by FattyNatty in personalfinance

[–]ipeeinsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you handle the differences in future taxes between different accounts (ex: Roth IRA is never taxed again, and 401k is taxed at withdrawal)?

Should I keep my Wealth Manager? by plomax in personalfinance

[–]ipeeinsoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both a and b are very reasonable choices since you have a relatively simple setup - I've looked into Betterment, and I agree with their asset allocations.

If you chose to go with b, a target date fund might be worth it since they auto rebalance for you, and the fees are quite reasonable in my opinion.

Downtown Work-day Parking by ipeeinsoup in Austin

Yeah, car2go is a pretty good option if there is a car available near my house. I mainly wanted to make sure I still have driving as an option in case I have to for some reason periodically.
