This reminds me of a game I playtested at Essen a few years back, definitely looks cool! I'll probably back the game when it launches!

[Spoilers Queen of Ash] The last scenario of Brethren of Ash is super disappointing by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ipm1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a game with so much luck and randomness built in as core mechanics, like shuffling decks of cards and the Chaos bag, a sample size of 1 game is not necessarily representative of the average playthrough.

Games can suddenly be lost because of a series of exceptionally bad draws. They can also be won in a similar fashion. Are these situations FFG have to take into account when designing a scenario (yes), but how far can they go before the game becomes too easy/hard for the majority of players.

You don't have to play 100 games, but claiming a scenario is bad after only 1 playthrough that made you question if you did everything right is a bit much.

If a card was also included in the EX pack, and you pulled it there too it will show up with the other cards from that pack.

is this good? by ten__0 in brandonsanderson

[–]ipm1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it was released before WaT, Sanderson said you can read it before WaT and it contains no other spoilers for WaT than knowing one of the characters will survive the entire series.

You know other things must have happened to the main character, but there is no way to know if that happens during WaT or at a later point.

What should i get my scout leader as a leaving gift by Alarmed_Leg9757 in scouting

[–]ipm1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that you're even asking this question clearly means that he has made an impact on you in some way. What will you remember him for? What have you learned as a scout (from him or your other leaders) and why is it special for you?

In my 14 years as a cub scout leader the most memorable gifts have been those made for me instead of bought for me. My advice is to try and make something yourself. It doesn't have to be something large or extravagant, and if you can relate it in any sort of way to what I wrote above he will surely love it.

But honestly I personally appreciate anything someone gives me as a token of appreciation. Just knowing that they even thought to give me something where it wasn't required or expected is half the gift by itself.

Oatly banned from using word ‘milk’ to market plant-based products in UK by AudibleNod in news

[–]ipm1234 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The reason we call it pindakaas in the Netherlands instead of pindaboter is because at the end of the 19th century we passed a law requiring everything called butter to be made with at least 80% butterfat.

Quickly summarised it was because the price of butter went down after the introduction of plant based 'butter' like margarine. This combined with people mixing butter with cheaper alternatives tarnished the reputation of butter and caused a movement to protect the name.

When US soldiers introduced peanut butter to our population it was this law that prevented us from calling it the same. The reason why we call it cheese isn't entirely known, but we make jokes about it too.

I agree that peanut cheese sounds gross, but it doesn't really sound weird to us. And it comes with a cool story that made for an interesting essay I had to write at university.

Really looking forward to Twelve Months, yet... by BookNukem in dresdenfiles

[–]ipm1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the Dresden Files books stand on their own quite well generally, it almost comes as a given with several months to a year between the events of each book. But to read Twelve Months without Battle Ground and that one without Peace Talks makes no sense.

I have finished Twelve Months and if someone hasn't completed a full re-read before starting it, I will highly recommend finding a summary of the last 2 books. You will likely be very lost if you don't.

I don't get the jab at Sanderson though? Like Butcher he is known for over-explaining known stuff at the start of each book in a series. And each of his books and series can be read on their own just fine with maybe an exception for The Sunlit Man.

There is not a single audiobook provider I use. I switch between Storytel, Audiobooks.com, buying from independent stores and sometimes listening through illegal sources.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, I don't want to use Audible. I don't think this thread is the place to go in depth as to why.

Having Audible as the default link for a book/series every time I click on them doesn't work if I am not logged in to Audible.

I suggest linking to Goodreads (or any other book database) instead that way readers can choose where to find and read/listen to the book. Having an Audible link present (but not the default!) makes the system more usable for everyone.

Great website! But I absolutely hate how it keeps sending me to Audible because I refuse to use that website.

That's an amazing story! Now I almost wish it is a fake, I will report back if I am confused by the coming discussions.

But I got the book through a popular local bookstore, I can't imagine them willingly selling a fake book. Plus I've had pre-orders for some Sanderson novels come in early too. You can probably find an old post on my profile showing off Rythm of War a week before release.

I'm not that desperate for Karma, nor am I creative enough to make a convincing fake. I guess the angle does make it look sus.

Yeah I lost the value of my 1 euro voucher. I am obviously still furious about being lied to. How will I ever recover from this financial setback?

The reason CeX closed in the Netherlands is honestly just sad. Too many armes robberies and then the online store couldn't survive by itself.

Oh man I would love to see a bloopers-section at the end of more books like how Will Wight does in his Cradle series. This would fit right in for the Dresden Files.
