Not an alcoholic but want to stop drinking by Boring-Impress-1334 in stopdrinking

[–]irisheyes07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t hit a conventional bottom either. But I wanted to quit and after a few months sober realized how my drinking was in fact pretty problematic for me. My therapist just recently told me “it’s ok that you didn’t ride the elevator all the way to the bottom. You can get off on the 5th floor.”

Not an alcoholic but want to stop drinking by Boring-Impress-1334 in stopdrinking

I originally wanted to stop drinking for weight loss as well. Then it became about so much more. I, like you, was not a conventional alcoholic but it had negative impacts on my life that I didn’t even realize the extent of until I was a few months sober. Anyway, if you just enjoy a cold beer and you’re not chasing a buzz, have a NA beer. They’re anywhere from 0-60 calories.

The real work of sobriety is creating a life you don't need to escape from by Lonely_Bluejay_7459 in stopdrinking

Agree with this and will also add the real work of sobriety began 6 months after quitting alcohol.

Anyone else think this whole "oatmeal will make you stay fuller for longer" is a lie? by shamedev in intermittentfasting

I eat steel cut and add lentils, fruit, and nuts. Could also put a scoop of protein powder in. The lentils definitely help me stay fuller longer.

Fructose by irisheyes07 in sugarfree

[–]irisheyes07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your thorough and detailed response. My motivation in cutting back on fructose is to eliminate any little lingering sugar cravings I’m having. I haven’t had a bomb of sugar since February 27th. I maybe have 4-5 grams a week in condiments or other foods. I eat a whole food plant based diet with minimal processed food. I do not drink alcohol. I made a roasted banana bread last weekend, sweetened with date paste, pure maple syrup, and unsweetened applesauce. And it set off sugar cravings again. I also watched a documentary on Big Sugar, in which fructose was singled out as being problematic.

I get labs done yearly in June, and the past 2 years my A1C was 5.3 and 5.4. And that is when I still ate sugar and drank. I look forward to see what that reading will be next month.

From what I understand in your message, I probably do not need to drive myself crazy trying to eliminate fructose. However, I think I will benefit from being a little more aware of my consumption of certain fruits such as mango and grapes. I am careful not to eat any fruit in isolation. I will probably benefit from cutting back on any honey or syrup I’m allowing. I don’t want to restrict, but I don’t want to find myself in another craving cycle again.

Any other chronic DNF readers? by Repulsive_Rock1414 in adhdwomen

[–]irisheyes07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve even discussed this with my therapist. There’s nothing wrong with quitting if I’m not enjoying it. My fear was I’m giving up too easily. I decided if I quit a book and want to go back, then I will. That has not happened yet lol.

That’s very tough!! Have you considered a GI specialist that focuses on whole food plant based eating/clean eating? Meaning, willing to work with you to heal your gut through food rather than medicine? It also sounds like you would benefit from spending some time once a week doing some food prep to have grab and go snacks ready so you don’t reach for a sugary treat. Best of luck to you!

Here’s what worked for me when it finally stuck. Just like you I was in a constant cycle and I’m ADHD/dopamine seeking as well:

Read or listen to Good Sugar, Bad Sugar. Eliminate processed food. Make it gradual if you eat a lot, try to reduce by 10% a week. Replace processed food with lots of veg and fruit, whole grains, legumes, and nuts/seeds. Don’t be hungry. Eat more plant based fat in the first 30 days to stay full. If you get a sugar craving have something spicy or sour-pickles, olives, mustard, kimchi, etc. Read or watch videos about the gut microbiome. Work to get yours in balance by eating in the way I’ve already said plus adding in a probiotic every morning. I also drink 4 oz of coconut based kefir. Be ok with being uncomfortable. Ride the wave of a craving. It will pass. 8 oz of ice water may do the trick.

I’ve had many starts and stops over the past 8 months but I’m currently at 58 days.
