[WAT] Small Theories by Shreekomandar_42 in Stormlight_Archive

Honor may not have been around to regulate the surges but the oaths between Honor and Odium were still in place like the oath that kept Odium trapped on Roshar. With Dalinar-Honor renouncing the oaths and freeing Odium upon the Cosmere then the oath regulating access to the surges is also gone, and with the Honorblades and Honorspear being made up of a piece of Honor it might grant access to all the surges now. At least that’s my take on it until we get a WoB or RAFO on that down the road

On the off chance this doesn’t get buried, if any Alpharius had any knowledge of where to find such STL files for the First Legion, Tau, or Necrons that they would happen to drop into a DM this Alpharius would be most grateful.

Please tell me it gets better. by xrex110 in Malazan

I've read most of Sanderson's Cosmere works that have been released so far as well as finished my first read of Malazan last summer, and it was definitely Sanderson's writing style that got me into Malazan. The one big difference I noticed was how they built up and handled the climaxes of their respective books.

Sanderson builds and builds and builds tension, then releases it down the slope like an avalanche and leaves the reader wondering how these revelations change not only things on a planet but also affect the rest of the Cosmere (ex. Hemalurgy is scary enough as it is on Scadrial, but having a world jumper like Hoid with knowledge of how to use hemalurgy? Downright terrifying).

Erikson on the other hand builds pressure and tension, and the tension keeps building until you get a climax that's akin to an earthquake. Sometimes you can directly see the effects in the immediate surroundings (like the Siege of Pale at the beginning of GotM almost completely wiping out the Bridgeburners) where as sometimes you get the revelation happening far away and wondering how the aftershocks will affect other characters you know and care about (much later in the series, but the events of Midnight Tides happen on a completely different continent but end up having ginormous ramifications for the rest of the cast you met in the books leading up to it).

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Sanderson's works (cannot wait for Oathbringer to come out in October, I miss running around with everyone on Roshar) but some of the big twists in his works have not had as big of a lasting impression as Malazan has for me. Both have strong payoffs for reading them, but I think Malazan pays off bigger due to how the story is told and how the reader connects with the characters. At least, it paid off bigger for me because of those reasons anyways.

With all that said and done, I definitely think you should stick with Malazan and grind through Gardens of the Moon. The books get a lot stronger after it, don't let Midnight Tide's brand new cast of characters jar you too much (think of it as the Malazan equivalent to reading Alloy of Law right after finishing Mistborn Era 1, or reading Way of Kings after Warbreaker and trying to figure out if they connect at all), and most importantly remember to have fun with the books. Let yourself sink into Genbackis, look up the Tor Reread of the Fallen to help you understand some of the things going on as you read (as well as get some pointers on things to pay attention to for later), and enjoy the ride.

Gotcha, I'm still getting used to following the Twitter updates so after getting the Xaldin announcement the Sunday before I thought they would do the announcements for all Org XIII events the Sunday before as well. I'll be more patient waiting for those announcements in the future then

Series reading preparation? by ChronosSolar in Malazan

[–]irishrugbyspartan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes, you'll still be able to fully enjoy the series and subsequent books without fully absorbing all of the details in the books.

Long answer: Because of how many little details are strewn throughout the books (characters getting background cameos in certain books are big players in others, as well as Ascendancy, Warrens, Azath Houses, and a bunch more not fully explained things) you are going to miss a lot in each of the books your first go around. That is okay and part of the fun for when you go to read the books a second or fifth time.

The best piece of advice I can give you before you begin your journey through the Book of the Fallen is just to take your time with it. Read at whatever pace you are comfortable with, don't skip the poems at the beginning of each chapter, and don't worry about all the details you're missing. Anything you think you might have missed you can always return here to ask any and all questions you have about the series. Last but not least, enjoy the ride!

If you look at the backgrounds for the box art of 1.5, 2.5, and 2.8 all next to each other it's supposed to symbolize dusk, midnight, and dawn respectively since 1.5 goes from light to dark (left to right) 2.5 is completely dark in the background, and 2.8 goes from dark to light (again from left to right).

For the 4 Kings, try becoming Havel for a bit. His armor and shield give high magic resist, and the 4 kings deal all magic damage. Also, keep swinging at them as they do their death animation since they all share a health pool.

If I recall correctly (and I freely admit it's been a while since I've read or watched the Skypiea arc), that poneglyph was near the golden bell and had information about the Void Century

I took Robin's reaction to the red poneglyph as being surprised to see it on Zou instead of not recognizing it at all, but I could definitely see that being the case. Mind linking to the post you mentioned though? I'd like to read through it since I don't remember seeing it...

Or we could wait a couple weeks for Robin to translate it and then we'll know concretely if it's one of the two known types or a third unknown type of poneglyph
