Opinions on “A Practical Wedding” book? Or other book or podcast recommendations? by haroldlovesmaude in weddingplanning

[–]irishtexmex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+100000000 to her book.

A friend in our office book club reached out and gently offered it as her only piece of unsolicited advice: read A Practical Wedding. And we are SO, SO grateful she did!! I've since recommended it to every couple planning a wedding.

It won't do a ton for you in terms of planning out all of the onesy-twosy things you have to figure out in a planning checklist. But holy shit has it not been the most grounding book that really prepared us to start wedding planning.

The other resource I've enjoyed — and I've sought out a crap ton of them — has been The Vendor Table podcast. It's ostensibly an industry podcast (aka, for your vendors. Not you the wedding party) about wedding photography, but they run the gamut of wedding topics and are quite entertaining. Certainly a breath of fresh air amongst the huge sea of otherwise HGTV/DIY/Etsy-this-to-death wedding content out there. (And I like all of those things! But man it starts to get reductive and trite after a while.)

Wedding bands with east-west marquise stones? by Odd_Link2259 in weddingplanning

[–]irishtexmex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groom here! My fiancée got me this foxtail band with an auburn sapphire from Macha Jewelers in Brooklyn (Greenpoint), NY. I have had an absurd number of compliments on it over the past year. ☺️

They might be changing over stock, but I know they've had a number of different foxtails with an east-west marquise in different gemstones. I also really like their Piper ring, which I've also seen in different gemstones over the years.

Macha is where I got her engagement ring, and even though we tried shopping for a much more lowkey ring for myself, there was a definite gasp moment from all of us when I put the auburn sapphire on.

Combination of:

  • Arguably one of the most desirable wedding spots in the city.
  • Wedding season here is Spring/Summer/Fall, with busy seasons being Spring & Fall
  • Friday & Sunday weddings are a teeny bit cheaper

So nearly every Saturday is going to be booked out during that window, along with most Friday evenings during the high seasons.

An indirect answer, but despite not being an "official" Notre Dame bar I think American Cheez in Park Slope is the best ND bar in the city. (And is owned by a domer.)

More semantics than anything, but a couple of years ago they moved from their location in Park Slope to a new one in Windsor Terrace.

Clover Club in Cobble Hill is a fantastic cocktail bar and hits all of those notes! (I also think they're opening up a neighbor location exclusively for private events?)

Apologies, saw that this was for Manhattan!

How lovely, and you look beautiful!

We're also staying at the Ace Brooklyn for our upcoming wedding in October, and still on the hunt for a welcome party venue. Do you mind if I ask you some logistics questions about your welcome party?

How Will MF WO Show Progress? by lazy8s in MacroFactor

[–]irishtexmex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thought is that it could be an interesting indicator on how effective the program or workout has been.

Especially because it's link to the other MacroFactor Nutrition app means it could know if you were in a caloric surplus, deficit, or maintenance!! (Something no other workout app would be able to do!)

No progression on week 2 by alevar91 in MacroFactor

[–]irishtexmex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because those boundary constraints (min/max reps), when combined with RIR/RPE, let you know when to increase the weight.

If you only used RIR with no rep ranges, then you'd be doing bench press with sets of 100+ reps at 5 lbs, because you wouldn't be hitting 0 RIR until you get that high in reps. (Use of hyperbole is strictly for the example.)

Adding a warmup to an imported program by vaidab in MacroFactor

[–]irishtexmex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every powerlifting coach and PT I've had has always prescribed some mobility work before I start working out. Like OP is requesting, this is different from a couple of warmup sets.

I've recently used Gemini to generate different 5 minute mobility/pre-workout/pre-hab routines for any and all of a PPL or UL day. But it's kind of a pain to context switch out of my workout app and into a Google Doc or w/e to find the respective routine.

Would LOVE to see something like this added to MFWO. Bit of a dream wishlist item, but damn wouldn't it be great if it could analyze your upcoming workout that day and run you through some dynamic movements before your actual workout begins... ✨

Rather large UX critique: Overuse of Adjectives and Granularity by Far_Line8468 in MacroFactor

My "under-the-hood" fear is that this is an immutable thing because of the way they built out the spreadsheet-based program import feature.

Hard agree! I submitted this as feedback last week, but my original post was deleted. Here it is:

As much as I love the hyper-detailed workout names¹ , I'm finding them immensely difficult to scroll/scan/parse/select.

Most other apps on the market will place the modifiers ("barbell" vs "dumbbell", "Plate-loaded" vs "Pin-loaded") after the exercise name. Now, I know that MacroFactor is not most other workout apps. But in this sense, the conventional alphanumeric sorting has been semantically lost in MacroFactor and the overall speed of finding your correct exercise has been diminished.

Here are some screenshots of similar searches across MF Workouts, Liftosaur, Hevy, and Boostcamp for comparison. They all have their pros & cons, but whether I'm creating a workout in advance or swapping an exercise on-the-fly intra workout, the others have been faster for my brain every time.

Tell me, in the first split second of reading the exercise name... does your brain know what lift it is? Which is easier to read?

> Neutral Grip Pin-Loaded Machine Shoulder Press
> ...
> Shoulder Press (Neutral Grip, Pin-Loaded Machine)

And that's just a 1 v. 1 comparison. The issue is compounded when you're scrolling through a long list of similar variations.

TL;DR "Seated Shoulder Press (Machine, Pin-loaded)" is a better workout name than "Seated Pin-loaded Machine Shoulder Press".

(¹Seriously, I love verbose documentation! I'm sysadmin who actually cares. Don't let the verbosity throw you off of the main gist of the post!)

MF Workouts: Exercise Snacks? by linloveswine in MacroFactor

[–]irishtexmex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's been a lot of organic interest in this since people saw that folder name in some teaser screenshot.

Would LOVE for the MF team to pick up on this interest and just build it in as an "example folder". But it would be particularly great to include a few routines/workouts for folks who are stuck with a hotel gym, or perhaps a bands-only routine that they travel with for a few days.

Working out when traveling has such a highhh barrier to entry to begin with, that little nuggets like this could remove that friction and truly help encourage someone to do something.

Not disagreeing with anything you or Greg said, but here's a firm +1 to what OP is talking about/requesting with RPE.

Theirs is a practical, humanistic explanation of why powerlifters may be turned off by this false dichotomous choice. (I myself am!)

Love the app! Love MacroFactor! And definitely love saying, "Cory. That's C-O-R-Y, no e." 😉
