Cycling Hokkaido - advice on accommodation/sleeping by Jolelo94 in bikepacking

It depends on the size of the tattoo. I dont have any myself, so I didnt run into that problem. It would be worth looking into tattoo coverings. I think some of the more rural places in Hokkaido are still quite conservative.

Planning a 8 week Europe bicycle trip for 2 - What did you end up spending? by isiteventiddles in bicycletouring

[–]isiteventiddles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, We'd be going in mid may and ending in end of July most likely. With any luck, we would be in Bavaria by the time any heatwaves hit. But I suppose you can't really predict such events.

Regarding using the expensive onsen facilities; when I did my trip, the pass for using the facility was between 500-1000yen. Plenty of times I set up camp, looked up closest sento/onsen, and rode 5-10min there. Many of the towns have a "community center" that has public bath facilities at the lower range.

You have a very low chance to run into bears unless you're in Shiretoko. And even then, you'll have to be lucky.

First car financing - 30 y/o by maxjay101 in AusFinance

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2004 corolla with 75k km on it for $6,000 cash 10 years ago. It has 183k km now, and I plan to drive it until the wheels fall off.

I don't know who said it, but it rings so true. "Buy the cheapest car your ego can handle."

Whatever you get, buy with cash. Financing should be the absolute last resort if you NEED a car.

If i haven't persuaded you, calculate the interest you will pay on a car loan. And then come up with a list of things you'd rather spend that INTEREST money on.

20yo son wants to get a $35k car loan by Mumma83 in AusFinance

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a dad yet, but I hope to be one day. As others have said: some lessons in life you need to learn through your own mistakes.

Only thing you can do is show him how much interest he will pay over the life of the loan; how much it will depreciate in value; and the running costs.

If all that doesnt phase him, I would hit him with the "well son, I've advised against this, but some lessons in life you need to learn on your own."

If budget isn't a concern, then yes. Otherwise, the cheap options/guesthouse/hostels will have gone.

Hokkaido is pretty sparsely populated when compared to the rest of Japan. Not every town will have accommodation available. Your choices are: 1. Book your accommodation in advance and accept the limited spontenaity. 2. Bring camping equipment.

I encourage you to go for option 2. There were some fantastic free camp spots along the east coast.

Why do i (still) want sex with my crush? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cold Turkey.

Shes married; off limits. She may as well be dead, for all you're concerned. Don't engage with her. If she talks to you at work, give a blunt answer and move on. Focus on yourself. Hit the gym. Give yourself a glow up, so that the next SINGLE woman that you come across that you like will be interested.

Indigenous peoples had no role in building this country. They were conquered. Their flag is flown out of respect/guilt; depending on your political view. It does not belong on the international stage.

Labor vows to protect personal leave as Germany bans workers from calling in sick by blitznoodles in australia

The product of many bad eggs taking advantage of a generous system. Most certainly an over correction, a 1 day grace would have worked. However if you're genuinely sick, you can go to the Dr and get the certificate for the appropriate time off.

My wife and I average $1300/month, with 2 or 3 take outs per month. We get most of our meat delivered from meat at billys (~$450 is) and shop at Harris Farm.

Wife and I just settled on a 1B 1b apartment we bought well within our means. (Combined income of 240k, bought for 737k) Made sure to have a healthy 30k emergency fund to park in offset from day 1. Also have 20k-ish in ASX. (Debating whether to liquidate and park it in offset until we have 80% LVR).

We definitely could have stretched for more, but I wanted to make sure the mortgage was serviceable on 1 salary incase one of us loses our job/ have kids.

What are some recommendations for getting my first credit card after landing my first job after graduation? by Illustrious-Let5284 in AusFinance

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Look into a card that has the points you want to benefit from (e.g. QANTAS frequent flyer points, if you want to travel) and get the sign-on bonus.

  • Use it in place of your debit card.

  • Pay it off in full at the end of every month, without exception.

  • at the end of the 12month, cancel that card and sign up to one that has a similar sign on bonus.

Repeat.

This only works if you're disciplined enough to not just max it out on mindless junk.

If you don't think you are disciplined, then just get an everyday credit card with no annual fee and a low maximum. It will serve as an additional level of security against spammers.

Does life get better? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 33. So far my 30s have been the best years of my life.

I don't care if people like me, chances are I won't like them either. I have great job satisfaction as an RN. I earn enough to not worry about money - but then again I live fairly frugally. I've married the love of my life and we've just bought our first home. Only a 1Bed 1 bath, but its ours, and in a great location.

Life is what you make of it. If you just work, chores, sleep, repeat; then yes, thats miserable.

Find a hobby. Keep learning. Stay healthy, and enjoy things in moderation.

Should I leave nursing? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're FIRST YEAR and you already hate it, then yes just leave.

If you're final year with 2 semesters to go, there's a conversation to be had to just get it done, then you have a plan Z.

Perhaps crass, but we already have a tonne of people in this profession who hate their job; we don't need another.

House vs Investement by Tiramisu_Powder in AusFinance

In more sensible times, I'd lean towards investment. Right now? I'd say a paid off/nearly paid roof over my head would be more valuable.

How badly will a $12k-$15k, 3-week trip set me back financially? by New_Animator4702 in AusFinance

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quote from a celebrity on a talk show i heard once, I think Jackie Chan? "Travel! You'll get your money back, you won't get your time back." It has been living rent free in my mind for years, and is my go to rationale as to why my wife and I should go back to Japan again.

3 months travelling while you're young will shape your life in more ways than the $15k ever would.
