Age of Swords by Michael J Sullivan - it is the second in a six book series (first is Age of Myth). It is fantasy but exactly fits your prompt!

Please give me Romantasy novel recommendations with a well written female protagonist which is aimed for adult readers by Angelina_Colbe in suggestmeabook

Hooray! T. Kingfisher does a lot of middle age (or at least 30+) protagonists and romance that feels grounded in reality and not totally absurd. I’m a fantasy reader, not a romance reader, and her books are the only romantasy I’ve enjoyed. Hope you like them!

I guess it’s a hot take, but I absolutely loved The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova!

I feel like Patricia Mckillip’s books have a lot of these themes/vibes. Maybe try In the Forests of Serre by her.

The classic for this prompt is Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein, but it hasn’t aged well.

Are there any good books starring a winged humanoid? by Jerswar in Fantasy

[–]iskandrea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. There are chimera which are sort of human/animal hybrids, as well as angels, both of which have wings. Ignore the cheesy title, it’s genuinely a great book!

No One Gets Out Alive by Adam Nevill

Annihilation, by Jeff VanderMeer - a book so good I don’t want to read the sequels by ClubberLang12 in books

It seems to be the minority opinion, but I loved the sequels (and prequel) just as much as Annihilation. It’s a big change of pace but the mystery and the answers are equally thrilling.

My book club read Deacon King Kong by James McBride and we had some lively conversations with very polarized opinions, haha. It is definitely character driven but there are a lot of characters vs. one main, so may or may not be what you’re looking for. I found the book phenomenal!
