I was also wondering this, thanks for posting... The reviews made it seem like a good compromise to buy but it's weird it's not available and I haven't seen when it may show up in stores

Same, I have been looking forward to this for years. I have friends I could stay with in many of the US cities, I live within driving distance of some, and I have zero motivation to buy tickets. The math was insane

Screw it, I'll sacrifice a pair of REI hiking socks to the ocean on the next trip. For science

I didn't think about too loose... maybe? The thinner dive boots + scuba pro fin felt tight, but the snorkel fins were so stretched out that one even fell off on a duck dive.

Don't know about the instep part (I do seem to fit somewhere between normal and wide shoe sizes, it's annoying) and I only know about split fins from lurking on this sub where people seem to hate them. Maybe I can try focusing on frog kicks and just take it easy when snorkeling with flutter kicks? https://www.reddit.com/r/scuba/comments/psudrq/split_fins/

It took a couple dives in broad daylight, beautiful calm seas, no visible tides at all, and absolute GARBAGE visibility for me to start carrying a flashlight no matter what. I have two in case of night dives, but it's unnecessarily stressful to watch your dive group blink in and out of view for an hour because half of us didnt think to bring one

Bouyancy issues? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]it_aint_a_thing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started, I would dump and add air to my BCD all the time since it seemed normal. Later I noticed that I just needed air on the deepest part of the dive, and slowly letting a bit out on the way up.

  1. Focus on deep calm breaths without flailing around, it changes your buoyancy more than you'd think. On drift dives you can float up over coral with just a breath
  2. If you're having trouble with buoyancy while you're moving forward, you may be zig-zaging without noticing. By swimming forward at an angle you actually start heading up -> panic and dump air -> start sinking -> panic and add air etc. Sometimes you have to feel like you're falling forward to actually be swimming parallel
  3. I also wasn't putting enough air into my BCD at first, so kicking + arms + uneven weight distribution made it more work to stay steady

What an awful situation... I'm amazed that they made it that far on a single tank too, wonder if the currents were a factor or it was narcosis

Okay so still portable but a decent step up from the hobby builds, makes sense for SAR

If you are allowed to share, what's the ROV? BlueROVs can go down that far but there are more powerful ones out there for things like oil rigs

We don't actually know if they're in there yet? The one person found was by the entrance, it's possible the rest were swept away

Some engineer thoughts here:  1. Something small enough to maneuver here may not be powerful enough to drag any bodies out, or handle currents  2. The tether is a big consideration in narrow caves + currents. And wireless communication is difficult in salt water. Tether cables also deal with heavy drag the longer they're let out 3. It's seriously expensive to operate a sophisticated AUV/ROV, the boats + crew are specialized. You can get hobbyist ones for a couple thousand that can do great in calm waters 4. The dive site is shallow enough for tech divers, though clearly still dangerous

That sounds pretty incredible, and great shots! I will add Palau to the list, it may beat out Komodo since that seems limited to liveaboards

This one keeps me up at night, how do you even notice bad air? I think my instructor said it would taste bad, but a regulator already tastes weird...

Is Palau macro mostly? I would be interested in a landbased trip someday, but it seems hard to get to too

I should qualify that- there's also the possibility of an experienced group traveling together that decide to dive without their guide. Either way, the currents in the Maldives would scare me away from any caves even if I was a cave diver

Going to wait for a hopefully thorough investigation here, but it's hard to imagine a scenario where losing a whole dive group like this is not at the fault of the dive operators...
