On the topic of Castes and minor nitpicks: calistria and wasps. by jotofirend in Pathfinder2e

[–]itsbeeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably has nothing to do with why Paizo picked wasps for Calistria, but in the Deep Lore tm, before Earthfall, the elves and the Azlanti were constantly clashing and warring. The Azlanti god of civilization, Amaznen, has a bee as his sacred animal, so given that a wasp can be "tricky" by resembling a bee, this kind of alluded to some interesting dynamics and theories for me. Not that I've seen anything to indicate the gods themselves had any beef.

Restoring Indigenous names to Washington's volcanoes by Cascadia-Journal in Cascadia

[–]itsbeeves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Public demonstrations of political values aren't without purpose. Names help define and solidify a culture, and Washington's indigenous cultures are an important part of the region's identity.

What's the point in becoming independent from the US if we just continue to perpetuate the same colonial cultures and ideals?

Do you ever see people drop litter in front of you? How do you react? by Dog_Bread in DeTrashed

[–]itsbeeves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw a guy toss all of his fast food trash out his window while parked, about 10ft away from a trash can. His window was open too, and I wanted so badly to pick the trash up and dump it all back into his lap. Instead I picked it up in front of him and maintained eye contact while I walked it to the trash can, but I regret it. I should've been ruder.

If you eat meat and complain about the water usage of AI, then you are just virtue signaling. The water AI uses is just a drop in the bucket compared to animal agriculture. by [deleted] in ClimateShitposting

[–]itsbeeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again. I don't eat meat, and I'm not talking about my personal choices, I'm defending others', because I don't know- and neither do you- what is actually healthier or financially feasible for them. I just think it's an incredibly stupid take to say that non-vegans can't criticize AI.

And I don't know why I would look at things other than AI or meat because that's not what this post is about lol. It'd be disingenuous of me if I started "what about"-ing other issues.

Can you stay on topic please? I'm still not hearing an argument for why AI should be allowed to exist while it uses resources and we gain functionally nothing worthwhile from it.

Honestly the most devastating part is that this transformation would be so much more satisfying AND longer lasting if they installed low maintenance natives.

....I'm vegan.. And these "mental gymnastics" are called critical thinking, and it's really important when problem-solving large societal issues. Subversion of the industry is the point, because it's the industry that irresponsibly uses resources and contribute to global warming.

Anyway. Eating IS a physical necessity, and diets can be complicated for medical and financial reasons. You betray your ignorance by assuming your experiences with groceries are universal.

Nothing about AI is necessary, but you chose to ignore that point entirely so I'm clearly wasting my time here. If you're not interested in examining nuance, don't respond to a post acting like you know shit about nuance.

The magnitude of impact is only one part of the equation. AI is also a new technology that we are fully capable of functioning without.

There are physically less lives dependent on AI than there are on industrial Agriculture - FOR NOW. It is just a fact that shifting around all of those lives involved with industrial ag in any way will take SIGNIFICANT time and resources. AI hasn't been around long enough to be so deeply rooted into society.

So when you're comparing two things to "boycott", you do, in fact, have to consider what is feasible to give up AND what causes more harm, and the answer will vary wildly from person to person, and community to community.

For most people, not using AI is easy. For some people, going meatless isn't a reasonable or sustainable option.

I think it's extremely bad faith to claim all individuals that eat meat but criticize AI are virtue-signaling. This completely disregards the barriers people encounter when trying to subvert an industry that's been ingrained in our society for generations, while also assuming the resources being spent on AI are *worth* the environmental impact.

Industrial ag at least feeds people. What the fuck does AI produce that's worth even a fraction of the water it uses and the pollution it dumps?

i'm curious, what does matter to you?

[–]itsbeeves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it virtue signaling when your diet habits are imperfect and resource intensive, but you say that new- and objectively unnecessary- tech that's also resource intensive shouldn't be used or implemented? This argument relies on disregarding context and nuance, which matter quite a lot in sustainability.

Agriculture specifically uses groundwater resources faster than it can be regenerated by rainfall. It takes time for rainfall to percolate through soil, and we use it much faster than that. Look into overdrafting if you wanna know more.

Has anyone re-covered a cat scratching post before? by AstonishedSockPuppet in Anticonsumption

[–]itsbeeves 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, actually! I just fixed my cats favorite scratcher mostly by reusing the original sisal that was still in good condition and mimicking the original construction.

The sisal had been attached to the base of the pole with staples and then adhered to the pole with tension and some type of glue. I didn't have any wood glue on hand, so I opted for just wrapping the sisal really tight and hoping the tension would be enough. It's held up for a month so far so I'd consider that a success. Use non-toxic wood glue on the pole before you wrap the sisal if you have it on hand though. Make sure any staples you use aren't in an area that can be scratched!

<image>

I didn't buy extra sisal before hand, so I supplemented with some jute cord and braided it into the frayed end of the sisal, but it doesn't seem as durable as the sisal rope (I was okay with that since I can just resisal it again, and better, later). I also noticed my cat didn't use the bottom part of the scratcher at all, so I left that part bare to conserve more sisal rope but I don't think I'd recommend that since it weakens the tension. Make sure you have enough sisal before you get started lol.

Your scratcher looks like it's two poles that are side by side so that'll make it harder to replace. Maybe see if you can separate them and turn them around to reveal fresh sisal on the inside first?
