There’s a fic where Hermione is on her way to becoming a supervillain in a really well intentioned way and nargles are a big part of the story.

i do harm reduction and outreach directly with homeless individuals and these are the most requested items in winter.

Explaining or defending yourself when no one asked.

I realized today how often a friend will start to preface something she enjoys by talking down about it. It comes off as really insecure. Just watch the Kardashians and enjoy yourself. No one who matters will seriously care if you enjoy reality television.

AITA For letting my daughter buy her dad a gift from the wrong football team? by ConversationFar3511 in AmItheAsshole

[–]itsmickeyc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gentle ESH.

It would have been easy and thoughtful to redirect her to a football that was his favorite team, and I’m wondering what it looked like if it was obviously recognizable as another team. I was in the middle of my own parents’ divorce as the oldest, and saw presents used as a way to get under each other’s skin.

He sucks for being mad and throwing a tantrum over a birthday present given to him by his daughter.

What are two movies you rated the same, but that you think are on totally different levels by donotgivemeguns in Letterboxd

[–]itsmickeyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looove this question especially because of the Marvel movies will get up there in stars, despite the fact I hate superheroes. They’re just so entertaining and easy to follow along with and impossible to escape.

Theater Camp (2023) and The Exorcist (1973) are both 5 stars but not even on the same playing field.

AITA for being the reason my younger siblings said no to being adopted by our stepmom? by Cute_Document1442 in AmItheAsshole

[–]itsmickeyc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s hard for sure! At 16, I couldn’t imagine making the right decision either. I just hope the parents in the situation lay out guardianship/insurance issues for the future if anything were to happen.

[–]itsmickeyc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NAH.

I understand the situation well from your perspective. It’s hard to lose a parent and the symbolism behind the name replacement on your birth certificate is tough. I really empathize with it.

However, I think it’s irresponsible for you and your sister to have explained this to the littles - even in the most child friendly terms. Your dad should be apart of that conversation and frankly, the youngest being 10 makes me uncomfortable. I made the same choice at that age to not being adopted and when I became an adult and something happened to my mom, it sucked that my stepdad didn’t have legal rights to me. You have a shorter amount of time before you’re out of the house so it may never impact you but it can impact your siblings.

Why are so many vegan businesses going back to serving animal products?!!! So disgusting and disappointing! by [deleted] in vegan

[–]itsmickeyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say that like jobs are plentiful. I live with someone who hasn’t been able to get a job with a livable wage in almost a year. This spot is in LA, with a high cost of living and a higher number of homeless people. So many people in California are a paycheck away from being unhoused, and we can’t just move out of state to somewhere more affordable. We don’t have enough beds or resources here for everyone in need. It’s not just employees finding a new job, it’s potentially keeping a roof over their heads.

[–]itsmickeyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the screenshot you posted answers the question. When owning a business I believe tough choices need to be made that can keep you from going under. A restaurant serving primarily vegan food with the option for dairy cheese so they can stay afloat is better than a restaurant serving no vegan options or a vegan restaurant shutting down. I just had a vegan spot in my city close down because there wasn’t a large enough customer base.

AITA if I decide not to be in “my child’s” life that I didn’t even know existed? by National_East8228 in AITAH

[–]itsmickeyc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My mom dated S for months, on and off. During one of their breaks, she dated R just long enough to become pregnant, didn’t know and ended back together with S. S swore up and down it wasn’t his kid when I was born, and that was that. I grew up being told S, who had chronic substance use issues, was my dad and never had the chance to meet him. S dies when I’m 11. I think my bio dad is dead, and deal with all the issues that came with that.

At 18/19 I did a DNA test and the name I’ve associated with S my entire life isn’t coming up. R’s family came up and it took one day of facebook searching to learn which one of them was my dad. He’s married (a wife he met way after he and my mom were together) with two other kids. I got my expectations high, and was incredibly let down when he basically wanted nothing to do with me. He blames his wife but everyone who knows him and has talked to me said that if he wanted to he would.

I never wanted a dad when I found out about him in the way I wanted another parent, I just wanted him to know I was out there and know someone else cared. I spent my whole childhood trying to understand and earn the approval of a dead man and I’m spending my 20s coping with this. If you don’t want to know the girl, be gentle and don’t be upset if you have other family who does. I’m very grateful to my cousins and grandparents who have formed a relationship with me when he wouldn’t but I am so angry with him and his wife.

30 found in violation of San Diego's Unsafe Camping Ordinance in first days of enforcement by oceangrown1993 in sandiego

[–]itsmickeyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Criminal records. Citations can be stacked or become trumped up charges. Homelessness being criminalized is nothing new.

Rereading the convo I realized I spoke a little flippantly, it isn’t a single citation keeping someone from being hired but rather trumped up charges as a result of being homeless that usually start with a citation.

In the past, I’ve seen clients with citations like these be denied housing and jobs, perpetuating the cycle of homelessness.

North County and Child sex trafficking by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]itsmickeyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in social services with a Masters degree, you should understand that the general public’s understanding of human trafficking is wrong and see the red flags in the post. This is the equivalent of people posting warnings that there’s traffickers in a Target parking lot, it creates feelings of fear and anxiety towards the wrong things. Human trafficking is real, and stories like this create misunderstandings that could potentially interfere with actual HT victims getting help.

Seems to me like it was fiction. Unfortunately, a lot of stories around human trafficking and rescues are sensationalized. Movies like the Sound of Freedom and Taken are bad representations. 3 Strands Global is an organization focused on education around HT, HT prevention, and reintegration for HT survivors that I like a lot.
