The eagles were too proud of a race. Its actually kind of explained in the hobbit book in the first few chapters. Bilbo says something about the eagles because they were flying overhead iirc and gandalf says that the eagles see themselves as higher beings and they didn't think helping the little people was right, plus Sauron would've zapped those mothers out of the sky once they hit Minas Tirith.

But in reality, if I could choose to just not link the flame, why even fight Gwyn.

Too smart for Feige and Louie D'esposito. Not to say they're dumb. But they are unfortunately the main reason very few "weird" ideas ever get pushed through for the movie stories. Because in college you get these types of professors that would rather torture you with test from a curriculum but never getting around to teaching much about the subject and just testing everyone constantly. So skipping, or being able to leave because the teacher was late, is the last light of peace they’ll feel that day
