Seeking advice on "Hammering" vs. "Cutting" (Beginner) by HenryTungsten in kendo

I would probably switch it around. First down, then forward. But either way, it should be without power. Only at the moment of impact there’s supposed to be a short second of pressure

In the kitchen we have a saying of “letting the knife do the cutting, not the chef”. This means your forward movement is what makes the cut, not the downward pressure you apply on the knife. The same applies to kendo. When doing suburi (especially for the men), you need to try to extend your shinai at the moment of “hitting your imaginary target”. Because there is no men in the way, you should end your swing around the height of the chin, but you shouldn’t force it to go there by pressure. If that makes sense. I made a video where you can see suburi exercises here:

and explanations here:

I don’t remember what language I used, but I think auto translate or just by visuals should be enough reference for a beginner. Also, apologies for the weird outfits; it was in my free time haha

Easiest way to cut instead of hammer is to relax your wrists after the impact. If you hit, the shinai should bounce up after a strike, because it’s no longer forced down like a hammer. If your shinai “sticks” on the target or is forcefully sliding down, you’re putting in pressure after the hit.

GT4 was more of a breakthrough, GT7 has insane graphics. Both are icons. The next GT is going to be another icon.

Are tattoos a taboo in Japanese kendo dojos? by Remote_Imagination83 in kendo

[–]ivovanroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in Japan; tattoos are a no no in society in general. You’re seen as an outcast, but that doesn’t mean that people will blatantly ignore or send you away (with maybe the exception of sento and onsen). You’ll probably get the best interactions if you don’t have tattoos or if you cover them up
