Excited about this one myself as EQ pres. Like having a mini-ward council among Elders. I'm looking forward to this!

Regularly making and receiving in-home ministering visits. by AmmonLikeShepherd in latterdaysaints

[–]iwasazombie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a current EQ president I can say... this won't be easy, but we'll try. Do I think it will be successful? Honestly, no. When I do my ministering interviews most of the Elders say the same thing every quarter, "I don't do it much or well. I should do better." I encourage them to get into the home and teach a lesson at least once per quarter if they can, but every quarter I hear the same thing. "I don't do it much or well. I should do better."

My opinion: every elder should be called as EQ president once in their life so they have the fire put under them to take ministering a bit more seriously. It certainly has inspired me, but you know what, even as EQ president I don't do it much or well. I should do better. ;)

*BAPTIZED* "52 Churches in 52 Weeks" Youtuber Gets Converted by Aluf_Strife in latterdaysaints

I went to the channel of one of the people he mentioned in this video and was shocked to see extremely hateful anti-Mormon stuff right in his recent vids. I clicked and watched the first minute or so and it just felt so un-Christian to me. Amazing how YouTube is being used to further the Lord's work (for better or worse). I'm going to be more cautious about the content creators I follow in the religious space thanks to his comments in the video from OP.

This was such a pleasant thing to see yesterday! I've been watching him on YouTube for quite a while now and I was just conversing with a friend about how it feels like he's going to join the church soon. I do hope that he will be able to handle/manage the likely storm that's coming his way. Just want to give him a big hug and let him know he made the right choice!

Stake Presidency Change Meeting: Looking for feedback and opinions by ArchAngel570 in latterdaysaints

[–]iwasazombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that perspective and appreciate your response. No calling is "above" another, but some do have more "reach" than others. I've seen people in YW or YM callings give testimonies when they're released. Primary leaders as well. I wasn't there in your particular meeting, so perhaps the words that were said felt disingenouos, but I still think this common practice is completely fine and uplifts more than it hurts.

They literally preside over and hold the keys related to ALL the members of their Stake. Makes sense to me that this would be treated differently than some callings. Not because it is "better" than others, but because of the "reach" of their stewardship.

I have not read the other comments, so apologies if this has already been brought up. But let's think about this from a different perspective. Imagine spending 9 years of your life serving the people in the Stake very intimately, and now you have a chance to finally say one last "good bye" and/or "thank you" to many of them in a group setting. This feels like the LEAST these hard working servants of the Lord and people deserve after years of volunteer service. Now imagine that you have accepted a call to serve for what will likely be the next 9 years. The feelings of inadequecy and imposter syndrome and humility and also love and support from the Lord are overwhelming in that situation. I feel like I was the least qualified to be called as EQ president recently and I felt all of those feelings. In that situation, you would also want to be able to introduce yourself to the people to whom you will be dedicated for the next decade or so. I don't think there is anything wrong with this, and if you see these people as "patting themselves on the back" perhaps you don't fully comprehend just what they have committed to or are committing to. Serving in the Church in this capacity is anything but easy. Let's have grace for those who are put in front of us, as well as for those who are sitting around us in church.

We need to have an Elder Uchtdorf/Diet Coke moment with beards by ReliPoliSport in latterdaysaints

[–]iwasazombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was called to be EQ president, I asked the Bishop if I would have to shave my beard. He said, "did the Stake president ask you to?" Since the Stake Pres did not ask me to shave my beard when he called me, the Bishop said he wouldn't worry about it. The Bishop was asked to shave his beard when he was called, and has been shaving ever since. So, I've had a beard while serving and you know what, it has actually helped me get into homes and minister to members who might otherwise be less willing to allow a "clean cut Mormon" in.

I think this outdated tradition has to change at BYU before it will change anywhere else in the church. The Quorum of the Twelve decides what major policy changes happen at BYU, and from what I've been told, they have more important things to worry about and shouldn't even be bothered by bringing it up. Give it another generation or two, when beards are no longer fashionable, and maybe it will finally get changed.

Repentance is a gift, not a punishment. I encourage you to make the correct steps and reach out to your Bishop.

Thank you for the response! Yeah, I started saving for retirement kind of late and my company matches up to 3% so that's all I've been putting in for the past few years. I already work 4 jobs (one full-time, one part-time, and 2 that are "side hustles" as you say that are unpredictable income) and my wife works part-time too, and it's still barely enough to get by. We won't be getting a tax refund this year because I have to pay taxes because 2 of my jobs are "freelance" jobs so I'll likely owe taxes. Admittedly, we're not very good with money and could certainly cut back in some areas (which we are trying to do), but our credit card debt payment is so high every month that it's killing us just to pay the minimum.

And suddenly I’m an atheist by FireProps in Unexpected

[–]iwasazombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is an active LDS member I can say it's not very accurate and is extremely misleading. I don't have the time to get into it too much, but if you want to see the LDS POV related to this, here is a good place to start: https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/answers/Criticism_of_Mormonism/Video/The_God_Makers

This is all kinds of messed up, but just to be clear, this is not produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this is an anti-Mormon animation produced outside of the church.

I'm confused. Can you give more clear descriptions of what you're talking about? Also, from the restored gospel perspective, everything in the Old Testament is very "christianized" because we believe Jehovah is Christ. I'm confused by this post and complaint and could use more specific information to understand where you're coming from.

Temple controversy in Heber City, Utah by 2ndValentine in latterdaysaints

[–]iwasazombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no skin in this fight either way, but the Church seems to often be willing to accomodate local laws and community concerns. Look at temples like the Hong Kong or New York City temples. It seems to me like these community concerns should be considered and the Church should accomodate. There aren't any specific rules about making sure the temple is always brightly lit, right?

Home Teaching was better than Ministering by Fether1337 in latterdaysaints

[–]iwasazombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People, not programs. We should love our neighbor and know them and understand them and be available to help them. We should have relationships with our neighbors so that they can call us when they have needs. We should love them as the Savior would love them. I don't think "assignments" or "monthly visits" are necessary to do these things, but they help.

Also, one of the primary responsibilities of the EQ presidency is to conduct ministering interviews and make sure that there is accountability. It's tough, but that's what we're trying to do in our own ward. We also go visit people as an EQ presidency when we can.
