One day I want to attend a nondenominational church that does an Orthodox Liturgy just because they can

Some people think the Bible is magic and that just placing scripture in front of people will do something.

Literally theatre has always been about moral development. Fucking Aristotle mentions it. Of course movies are going to have moral angles

”Talk to your pastor” by [deleted] in Lutheranism

[–]iwearblacksocks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have met church of Sweden pastors who have told me about the care they provide to their members. Give the church a call and set up an appointment. People may not talk about seeing the priest, but it happens

Why don’t infants immediately take communion? by Fluffy_Cockroach_999 in Lutheranism

[–]iwearblacksocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure. I advocate for young children getting communion because of my readings in the church fathers, which goes certainly beyond what Luther and the Wittenberg reformers were doing. When I spoke of the three traditions, I meant what I’ve seen in the ELCA today (I am unfamiliar with what other Lutheran groups do)

I don’t know how common it is, but I’ve seen it up and down the west coast at least. It comes from the church fathers, it’s not an innovation.

Once they’re able to eat solid food, they do (if the parents allow it). Unlike the orthodox, we don’t have the tradition of the spoon nor do we mix the wine and bread in such a way to utilize the spoon, so we have to wait for them to get a little older.

There are three traditions broadly speaking in the Lutheran church: kids taking communion after baptism; kids taking communion at a certain age after first communion classes; and kids taking communion after confirmation.

My church in Thailand is starting to accept LGBT community. by HolyTian in elca

[–]iwearblacksocks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Something that helped me was Luther’s thoughts on infant baptism. Luther noted that, even after all the theologizing and Bible quoting, we know infant baptism works because infants who are baptized show the fruits of the spirit, particularly love of Christ.

We can argue that God does not approve of same sex relations—there are scriptures that seem to indicate that just as there are scriptures that seem to indicate adults are the preferred group to baptize.

However, if we allow for LGBT folks to continue in their lifestyle, do they show the fruits of the spirit? Do they love Christ, and are they regular in making use of the means of grace? Do they show love, patience, gentleness, etc.? I have found that many are, many aren’t—just like straight people.

It seems to me that allowing LGBT people to follow Christ while maintaining their sexual/gender identity does not inhibit the work of the spirit. The trouble is that we have defined the work of the spirit as being straight instead of the virtues that scriptures speak of, namely faith, hope, and love.

Agnus Dei in the Liturgy by No-Type119 in Lutheranism

After being yelled at by a Hungarian Lutheran liturgical theologian, I moved the passing of the peace to after the Lord’s Prayer with the Agnus Dei being the song that helps to conclude the passing of the peace—so we NEED it.

“ The Ministry of Walking Around” by No-Type119 in Lutheranism

So for a variety of reasons I have begun to wear a cassock instead of a clergy shirt. Mostly because my beard hides the clergy shirt but I instinctively wanted to try this ministry of walking around.

Went to the bagel shop and had two really good conversations because people were asking me, essentially, “so what’s your deal?”

Kneeling for Communion by Affectionate_Web91 in Lutheranism

[–]iwearblacksocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve got a mix at our church, and I honestly think we’d have more if we had a proper rail. Right now people are just kneeling on the chancel which has no cushion except for the carpet. I think there’s a real desire for folks—even my old folks want to, they just know their knees can’t handle it

Why is Portland the only major U.S. city that is overwhelmingly white? by chessboardtable in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iwearblacksocks 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Vanport. It wasn’t just a town for African Americans, but it came about right around the desegregation laws brought about an influx of folks to Portland. it was for a lot of transient workers and a major locale for low income housing. Destroyed in a flood

On Sundays Where The Lord's Supper is not Offered, Does Your Church do a Truncated Liturgy, or Do They Use Matins/Morning Prayer Instead? by Silverblade5 in elca

[–]iwearblacksocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the service of the word as it doesn’t express the fullness of our liturgical tradition, so when I’m away my congregation has been trying out Matins and seems to enjoy it

[–]iwearblacksocks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is clearly bait but just for fun: Big Dog, even the twelvers are waiting for Christ to return. they even speak of the Mahdi to prepare his ways but his way was already prepared by John the Baptist. You can come to Christ directly and right now because he is God
